Getting a good idea about Bond from Fleming or even Charlie Higson is no doubt a decent foundation to approach such a project. But we must drop the idea that would be conditio sine qua non in our modern corporate environment. James Bond is whatever Eon, IFP or Amazon decide that it is. Bond is defined by the success with the audience.
I was recently reminded of this when I read @Jim ’s ranking of the Gardner novels:
There’s such an astonishing range far far outside what even Fleming would have considered, from the splendid to the abysmal - but at the time we wolfed these books down annually. This was lit Bond as defined by the Glidrose output and the fact we bought and read them justified a new entry each year.
It’s much the same with this game, regardless what us old geezers think of it. First Light will have to succeed with much younger people - and if it does that’s their justification then.
