Well, I did it. With On His Majesty’s Secret Service, I finally got to the end of casting the James Bond 007 continuation novels. I’m not going to do Kim Sherwood’s series as it’s just too different from the rest of the series–and Bond really isn’t in it. (Meanwhile, Samantha Weinberg’s The Moneypenny Diaries series I did include because it still resembles Ian Fleming’s James Bond and MI6–albeit from Moneypenny’s perspective–and Bond is also in it quite a bit.)

To do the casting, I followed some self-made guidelines that I’d like to share now. I’d also like to add this caveat, I periodically did go back and add a few more actors to the adventures as well as recast a handful of characters that I felt I either missed the first time around or came across an actor/actress that I had either forgotten about and/or thought was better suited for the role. Anyway, on to my guidelines:

1 – I tried to be as accurate as possible to the description of the various characters.

2 – I tried as much as possible to use actors and actresses that I like.

3 – I tried to be as realistic as possible for not using megastars in roles they normally wouldn’t take (such as Tom Cruise in a Bond film) UNLESS it was at the very beginning or ending of their careers when they weren’t the megastars we know them to be. Additionally, while not trying to do so, I still undoubtedly undervalued some lesser star actors/actresses or even some character actors/actresses to put them in smaller roles they probably normally wouldn’t sign on for because I wanted them cast for those said roles, but oh well, it’s my casting.

4 – I only casted characters in novels who occupied one filled page or who said or did something on three separate mentions. In the case of short stories or biographical tales, however, because they were so short, if a character was mentioned at all, they were cast.

5 – If a character’s face was not seen on the page due to them wearing a mask or whatever, I did not cast them since it really wouldn’t matter who played them. Additionally, in the more recent adventures, if the character was basically limited to being involved in what would be a stunt or fight, I tried to cast stuntmen.

6 - If a character returned in another adventure, I used a different actor/actress much like what happened to the Ernst Stavro Blofeld and Felix Leiter characters in the EON years. The only exceptions were the recurring characters at MI6 and at Bond’s schools at Eton and Fettes as well as Bond’s housekeeper May and M’s servants the Hammonds and Davisons.

7 – Each James Bond actor had his own recurring cast. So new Bond actor, new cast.

8 – I don’t know a lot of teen actors from the U.K., so for Bond and his school mates in the Young Bond novels, I cast actors in their 20s. And for those characters from the Young Bond novels that seemed to be in their 20s compared to Bond in his teens, I cast actors and actresses in their 30s.

9 – For James Bond: The Authorized Biography Of 007, I went back and broke up Bond’s career into before he became 007 and after. As a result, I cast two different Bonds for those roles, likewise for the parts of War Bond in the novels Double Or Die and Solo. (FYI: To do this, I moved Ian Ogilvy from the early John Gardner run to the pre-007 years in JBTABODOS and made Lewis Collins 007 for the early Gardner years.)

10 – If Henry Cavill gets cast as James Bond #7, then I will recast him as 007 in Forever And A Day to the present. If he’s not, then, of course, he remains my choice here.

All told, I casted for 91 adventures–60 novels, 16 short stories, and 15 biographical tales. Whew! Despite all that work, it was fun to do seeing which actors and actresses might fit each part. And I have to admit, I’m pretty pleased with myself sticking with it all the way through. Though I feel if I would have stopped, I might have had a hard time getting back to it, so I made sure to keep on plugging away.

So thank you to all who have supported me on this journey and helped with placing comments to allow me to re-post and keep it going. I appreciate it.

Hopefully, literary James Bond will return – and when he does, I’ll be there to cast it.

Truly an exceptional work of love, @Double-OhAgent, quite outstanding. Your dedication to this task, your attention to detail and a reasonable set of rules you gave yourself make this thread a very inspiring read. Many great ideas - Isaacs, Ochsenknecht, Mirren, Prochnow - that were sadly missed at the time.

Thanks guys.

I have to admit that a lot of the foreign actors and actresses that I cast I’ve never seen or heard of. But for those, I used imdb and Google images to assist me and I just went by gut feel for they looked like at the time for the timeframe I casted them, how they compared to the novel character, what type of acting character they may have specialized in during their careers, if they were acting at that time, and if they were big stars or not.

And I think it worked for the most part–though some casts were much harder than others. For instance, there wasn’t a lot of 20-something dwarves out there to fill Hugo Grande’s role. It was pretty much Sam Humphrey or nobody and even then I had to fudge a little and cast him in Shoot To Kill when he was still at acting school and hadn’t had his first role yet.
