As a depiction of specifically Eliot, it works. He may not be representative of a country, but he is still the same kind of vicious colonialist that were the traditional villains. He was just a new breed of it.

Interesting votes so far, I’d liked to hear some of your sides regarding this topic.
I wouldn’t give my personal opinion on this to avoid biasness.
I like the idea of Bond cheating with the Tarot cards because it signals there is only superstition behind it. And the movie is mainly about a villain using superstition to get what he wants, with Bond thwarting his efforts.
Is it a rude move in order to convince young Solitaire to join the „good“ side? Maybe. But again, Bond is not a nice guy. He uses every trick to get ahead. And it is surely better for Solitaire to leave her superstition behind and escape Mr. Big‘s influence.

A good idea - but was it ever executed?

Again, for the me the eternal waffler…it’s not so much a bad idea, and it is executed to its best intent. Like all things TWINE, I have consistently tried to forgive it and unlike many, I do have a soft (raises eyebrow in best Sir Rog fashion) spot for Richards who is giving it her best. It’s not on her that the dialogue is what it is. The role is designed as eye candy in a film that has to balance the “pithier” plot presence of the villain-in-disguise. And Bond films being Bond films, they weren’t going to be able to cast someone with a higher Hollywood profile.
I think Richards/Jones gets the criticism she does because of that combination - Richards comes with her “Wild Things” baggage (in isolation not a bad noir-ish thriller) and the Jones character limited by its very need to exist. Is she believable as a nuclear physicist? Let’s put it this way - Holly G in MR seems like a pretty incompetent combination of CIA agent and astronaut, and XXX never really seems vaguely in the realm of a 007 equivalent. Jinx annoying, D’Abo as whats-her-name instantly forgettable, Mary Goodnight is, well, exactly, so in the pantheon Bond girls why Jones takes so much stick is a bit of a wonder
And Stacey Sutton though, for such a geologist
you know it…
I think this is an interesting discussion about those Bond Girls and their credibility with their professions.

Bond vacated his position, so the number was up for grabs. I have no problem with that because it’s what would happen. I like how Nomi returns the 007 moniker to Bond before they infiltrate the island, too. A nice touch. Bond said it’s only a number but deep down we know he didn’t really mean that. He would’ve appreciated having it back officially, and as a viewer I did too.
One of the very many things that they absolutely nailed with this film.

Already fixed the settings, you can now vote! ![]()
(I’ve forgot to turn on the setting that would’ve let me to see who voted).
Back to the salt mines…
OK, will get round to the “Good/Bad idea” thing later in the month. To kick us off, repeatedly kick in a Brooklyn Stomping, we’ll have another Sudden Death.
To commiserate 50 years of me, fight between the film of 50 years ago, Live and Let Die, and the one they produced on 50 years of Bond, Skyfall.
Last year it was decided that the Victim of Live and Let Die was Strutter, not Rosie. Decide how you like for this one. Likewise whether you vote for “Woman” for Skyfall on the basis of it being Skyfall M THE DENCH, or Moneypenny (which it is). Doesn’t matter here. Doesn’t matter anyway.

I ended up going with LALD for the woman selection on the basis that in the Bond girl death match M was (wrongly
) considered the Bond girl. However, I would choose Skyfall over LALD if the Bond girl is Eve Moneypenny.
The henchman question was easiest as after 30 seconds of trying I was still unable to remember what character if any fit that role in SF.

It’s 40 years since the Battle of the Bonds! Aren’t egregious disputes over intellectual property conducted by greedy people massively fascinating? 40 since, as a 10 year-old, I considered these the best films ever made. 10 year-olds are cretins.
Anyway, might as well do this one:

You should have met me when I was 11-18.
19-40 was also problematic.

Continuing the theme - 25th anniversary Bond vs. Bond 25. I seem to recall that it was decided that the “Victim” of No Time to Die was Felix Leiter. I think it’s Dou-Dou which dies early and then Bond’s child is lugging a festering carcass around, I am pleased by this thought.
