This is a planned trilogy, so it’s possible the plot beats are already known. If Bond is physically absent in the first book, his presence could be his legend status. Which would make an eventual return all the more juicy. What impressions do the new agents have of _the man_ rather than the myth?

If done right, it could create an effect similar to George Smiley in novels in which he has only a minor role. His presence and legend remains palpable and it still feels like a Smiley novel.

I seem to recall a “0037” or some other two digit number in one of Fleming’s novels. The idea that there are ten (or eight, who’s 001? Is there a 000?) seems to be from the movies.

What little the article mentions - or guesses - seems to indicate the main plot centres around new 00s. Who also have to find the missing Bond. And deal with a traitor. Plenty of espionage fare - but it’s really hard to tell from this how central Bond’s involvement is in all of it.

It was 0011. But it does seem that all the double-ohs should range from 001-009. EON has certainly gone that route.

I think trilogies work well for Bond. The obvious one being Thunderball, OHMSS and You Only Live Twice. High Time To Kill, Double Shot and Never Dream of Dying focus on The Union and I think work rather well as one story, and something similar would perhaps suit a film series. The hook in For Special Services, Role of Honour and Nobody Lives For Ever is the resurrection and final defeat of SPECTRE. Craig’s films could be distilled down to Casino Royale, Skyfall and No Time To Die - the beginning, middle and end of his career. So I’m interested to see how Sherwood has her story planned out.

I was just having this conversation last night. Those 3 Craig films really encapsulate his tenure; the other 2 add shades of color to them, but those 3 are essential. Granted, NTTD needs SPECTRE to set up Bond and Madeleine and explain Blofeld’s incarceration, but Craig’s growth in the character can be summed up by those three films.

It’s funny, I took two friends to see it the other night. They both said it was good, but neither said they saw SPECTRE. Even so, they followed the story fine.
That being said, over drinks after when I showed them the poster from SPECTRE, both remembered they did see it, but forgotten that they had, even after seeing NTTD.

It seems she’s going all out for Bond. The first person from my generation to write a James Bond novel!
We know that M and Moneypenny will be returning. Who else could be coming back in this trilogy? Alec Trevelyan, but another 00 agent could be Scarlett Papava or Raoul Silva. MI6 personnel I think could turn up are Loelia Ponsonby, Bill Tanner and Mary Goodnight.

I’m thinking about James bond only appearing briefly. I wonder if it will be like the movie BENEATH THE PLANET OF THE APES, where Charlton Heston’s character Taylor, the lead in the first movie,only appears in the first and last few scenes,but is essential to the plot?

I agree completely. Bond should exist within the universe of the book, but the whole concept needs to live or die on its own as additional adventures within the Double O section with only the most tangential relationship to Bond without requiring him to be an ongoing active participant.
