A new book from Assouline:
“James Bond Style explores the timeless fashion in all twenty-five Bond movies”
It better have the pink tie if it aspires to definitive status. Otherwise, save your $127.00 (plus shipping, handling, and any taxes).
Their other James Bond book “Destinations” is a very beautiful book, so I have no doubt this new one will be excellent too.
An affordable mass-market edition of Talk of the Devil: The Collected Writings of Ian Fleming will be released on May 27, 2025. Better late than never!
This collection contains a selection of journalism and other writings by Fleming, covering his wartime experiences, reflections on crime and espionage, and the process of writing his novels, among other topics. Readers will feel like they are right beside Fleming, immersed in his world as he works to meet the deadline for his next Bond novel, or participates in a mortifying golf tournament, or befriends an octopus in his beloved Jamaica. A black-and-white photo insert gives dimension to the man behind the myth, bringing life to his words and providing a unique glimpse into Fleming’s world.
This is great news. Finally!
Gave this book yesterday to myself for my birthday.
It’s a fantastic and beautiful book about the specially designed clothing for the films with lots of pictures, well known and less well known and a lot of times also with the original sketches and designs of the clothing on the other page next to the photographs. I highly recommend this book.
Oh! A fun fact: One of the four founders of this publishing house, can be seen in her younger years as one of the ladies depicted on the teaser poster of Moonraker, she is the lady at the bottom right holding Bond’s boot/leg. She had strongly requested that this not be mentioned in the book, but the editor could not resist the temptation and so included it anyway.
Wanna read everything about FYEO…?
Got the MI6 Configential this week, it’s nice but not a must have, but, but…
on the last pages there’s talk of a new photo book from Porterpress about the Bond vehicles with no fewer than 800 (!) never-before-seen photos. It is part 1 of a three-piece series. Looks like these are the Connery and Lazenby years. That is the good news, the less good thing is that this book also costs around 120 euros. That is a lot of money, it almost seems that no more books are published on these types of subjects that cost at most around 50 euros.
Intriguing.
Last week I ordered and received this evening the book “On My Way” by Martine Beswicke, ofcourse I didn’t have the time to read it, but il looks interesing and has a couple of nice pictures of Martine. Untill a week ago I didn’t know this book was released last december. It’s a beautiful hardcover book and it covers her whole life and career. Love it!
PS: The backcover is also very nice!
I’ve written a review of Ian Fleming and the Politics of Ambivalence, by Ian Kinane. The book is an academic study concerning Fleming’s ambivalence regarding Imperialism and Jamaica. The review, “Colonialism, Race, Jamaica, and 007”, can be read at Artistic Licence Renewed.
Great review. Thanks Revelator.
Just got word about an upcoming new publication:
The Blofeld Files – The Making of the Iconic Alpine Sequence in the James Bond Movie “On Her Majesty’s Secret Service”
by Steffen Appel and Peter Waelty, the team of authors that brought us The Goldfinger Files a few years ago.
There’s not much to be found on the net until now, but there’ll be a (invitational) launch event in Zurich on March 15th, so I’m assuming the book will be availble from the usual sources after that date.
Thank you for the information! I hope we get more of these books from them. Could the press release that week be made because that week would have been Peter Hunt’s 100th birthday? The timing while not on his actual birthday does seem to be more than coincidence. Maybe a Blofeld book series is in the works.
Locals telling their stories about the cast and crew who spent six months in the region? With 700 photographs? This is a dream for OHMSS fans and a must buy. Thanks for letting us know.
“Edition Bleuchamp.” Awesome.
While I have a ton of Bond books (all the usual ones from Steven Jay Rubin to Taschen), hands down my favorite Bond book of all time is Deborah Lipp’s “The Ultimate James Bond Fan Book.” Of course, she goes chronologically through all the films (through SPECTRE) and does the usual summaries and reviews. But it’s all the extra bells and whistles that she has added that makes the book so special. First, she not only includes her personal rankings, but also the averages of a number of top fan site rankings. Then, between chapters, she has mini-essays on various topics from Bond girls to allies to mega stunts etc. Best of all, is her writing style. It really feels like you’re sitting down with a great Bond friend and casually chatting. A terrific book to pick up and read either straight through or pick out chapters on the Bond films you’re currently enjoying. Highly recommended.
I have it here, browse it from time to time. Have to say she’s won me over with one or two less conventional opinions argued so reasonably they stuck with me. A fun read.
Haven’t read the book, but Deborah used to be a regular on the old CBn forums.
I remember a vivid description of a location (walking) tour of New York, organised by Matt Sherman. Must have been a bona fide death march (which was confirmed by everyone else who took part)
