Movies: Presumably 2024, maybe Beyond

Bizarre - but probably true.

Humans are by nature a herd animal. We usually avoid being alone because we don’t like it. For a herd animal there’s safety in numbers, so we’re naturally a social species. Our problem is, we seem to have misplaced our abilities to congregate in person in numbers and still remain social. Or the usual ‘social behaviour in numbers’ has changed towards an antisocial slant.

Whichever it is, it’s been a longer trend and it seems to be getting worse.

It´s good for cinemas that they want to remake “The Bodyguard”. But it’s not good for cinema.

I guess I could say that I’m excited for Beetlejuice 3. Out of that WB report. Although it seems like The Batman Part 2 with Matt Reeves is becoming less likely.

At this point they should either make Part II a conclusion or just forget about it and move on with the DCU. And that’s coming from someone who liked Pattinson as Batman. I’m becoming more excited about the possibility of The Brave and the Bold, especially if it’s anything like Gunn’s Superman. Imagine a decked out classical batcave complete with giant penny and T-Rex.

One of the few movies I really am looking forward to this year.

Robert Pattinson will have what seems to be a large part in Dune: Messiah. I think Gunn’s stealth curve of a Batman sequel has worked, and maybe Pattinson knows it, moving on with his career before the sequel becomes officially cancelled.

By extension, it also means probably that The Penguin series is finished as well, which I will miss.

I’m sold. My only conflict now is whether I should cram the novel before watching the movie. :grimacing:

EDIT: Wow! Mia Sara, back in the mix!

It’s only a novella - and do read it. The adaptation will have to flesh it out.

Marvel seems to only make movies about… family… now.

Flashy. Good actors. But everything looks and feels overfamiliar. AI cinema.

Because we do not have artists any more. Or even craftspeople.

We have content creators.

8 simple steps, folks. Whaddaya waiting for?

I believe we do have those.

But they are forced to paint by numbers because the numbers crunchers predict that only this way money can be made.

The really weird thing is: when they are proven wrong the consequence is always to keep on believing in their predictions.

Probably the flops have to keep on coming.

Currently the big thing. The Arts imitating real life or vice versa?

Which moves them from artists to content creators without even a pitstop at craftsperson.

Like the Thunderbolts, but hate really everything about FF

I have a soft spot for the faux 60s setting of the Fantastic Four flick since that’s the period I was introduced to them. It’s different from most other Marvel fare and to me captures some of the outlandish Jack Kirby vibes of that comic book. But the cast…I struggle, I really do.

They were my favorite comics 40+ years ago with this almost nihilistic settings in the negative Zone, Galactus and the Silver Surfer…What is wrong with the tiny head and the girlish voice for the Thing? Why Johnny has to look like an albino? And why Kirby and Pascal? And why Shalla Bal as the female Silver Surfer? We didn´t have the background story for Norrin Radd or any of the other Herolds of Galactus…?

I’m still nervous. I really like Jessie as a character, and I’m happy that she has a bigger role this time. I also wonder if they will reference Lightyear (2022) in any way. Hopefully, our man Timothy Dalton is back!

In all fairness to this particular project, The Fantastic Four were the original Marvel family, in fact & theme. Beyond them, I agree that Marvel has stretched the theme, occasionally for commercial purposes.

The FF have always been my favorite hero team. Their dynamic powers compliment each other, based on the 4 classic elements (as were Galactus’s first 4 heralds). Also, to me, they were like the Star Trek landing party of Marvel’s heroes, often far away, seeking out the strange & new (in cool uniforms). It also helps any story for the hero(es) to have the best villain as a nemesis, as Doom was for decades.

This latest incarnation’s tweaks are due in large part to a combination of two things. First, the fact that there have been two notable cinematic failures for “The World’s Greatest Comic Magazine”. Some things are being changed for the sake of change. Secondly, the stakes are very high for this movie. Beyond itself, it & The X-Men, are the vanguard for the finally united timeline. If it is underwhelming then it’ll be contagious for what comes after.

The only casting choice that I question is Vanessa Kirby for Susan Storm. I don’t doubt her talent, but she gives me more ‘villain’/‘shady contact’, than hero.

And the character of Susan Storm, I would like to see more character development for her before she becomes a mother (or even expectant mother). It’d be nice for the Invisible Woman to be seen, not the Invisible Mom, yet. Again, I think that development is a casualty of the two prior failed attempts.

Silver Surfer: I will miss Norrin Radd not getting his deserved shot in a quality story, and Lawrence Fishburne’s voice acting of him. Though, I can roll with Shalla-Bal.

Namor, The Sub-Mariner: please, get that classic FF arc going! Could be so good! So good!

Related note, Pedro Pascal looks more like book Tony Stark than Downey’s Stark does.

My two favorite Fantastic Four book issues are Vol 1 issues 350 and 352 (1991).
