In all fairness to this particular project, The Fantastic Four were the original Marvel family, in fact & theme. Beyond them, I agree that Marvel has stretched the theme, occasionally for commercial purposes.
The FF have always been my favorite hero team. Their dynamic powers compliment each other, based on the 4 classic elements (as were Galactus’s first 4 heralds). Also, to me, they were like the Star Trek landing party of Marvel’s heroes, often far away, seeking out the strange & new (in cool uniforms). It also helps any story for the hero(es) to have the best villain as a nemesis, as Doom was for decades.
This latest incarnation’s tweaks are due in large part to a combination of two things. First, the fact that there have been two notable cinematic failures for “The World’s Greatest Comic Magazine”. Some things are being changed for the sake of change. Secondly, the stakes are very high for this movie. Beyond itself, it & The X-Men, are the vanguard for the finally united timeline. If it is underwhelming then it’ll be contagious for what comes after.
The only casting choice that I question is Vanessa Kirby for Susan Storm. I don’t doubt her talent, but she gives me more ‘villain’/‘shady contact’, than hero.
And the character of Susan Storm, I would like to see more character development for her before she becomes a mother (or even expectant mother). It’d be nice for the Invisible Woman to be seen, not the Invisible Mom, yet. Again, I think that development is a casualty of the two prior failed attempts.
Silver Surfer: I will miss Norrin Radd not getting his deserved shot in a quality story, and Lawrence Fishburne’s voice acting of him. Though, I can roll with Shalla-Bal.
Namor, The Sub-Mariner: please, get that classic FF arc going! Could be so good! So good!
Related note, Pedro Pascal looks more like book Tony Stark than Downey’s Stark does.
My two favorite Fantastic Four book issues are Vol 1 issues 350 and 352 (1991).
