Movies: Presumably 2024, maybe Beyond

This will be interesting for the next Bond era:

Looks like a fun farce. As opposed to a plain old standard farce that’s now documentary. Might be highly entertaining.

I love this.

Me too. The trailer has heart and soul and gets what Superman is all about.

Looks like Donners Superman fuc…d by Gunns SS…hate the suit, hate the design of the S, hate most of the villains (except Blofeld äh LL) …

Indeed, this has some nice vibes. Bit more like the Superman of the 70s I grew up with. And actually - dare I say it? - fun!

Since I never was a big fan I don’t recognise most of the other players. Meaning I’ll go into this largely ignorant of villains’ and allies’ backstories or how they fit into it all. Will be a refreshing experience.

I only have limited knowledge of the comics (I guess it was the Silver Age of them when I was a boy and caught some of them on our local newsstand) but Donner‘s first movie was a revelation for me.

And I still love the character, which Gunn seems to have transported very well into our times (the new spin of the Lois interview is fantastic).

I did remember Krypto, though. Back then I thought a superdog was kind of silly.

These trailers make him work for me, surprisingly.

A dog in a cape is silly. A team of robot helpers in capes is silly. A miniature city in a bottle is silly. Wearing your underpants on the outside is silly. The trick is to find what’s inherently awesome about all the silly stuff and lean into it instead of running away from it and trying to make an inherently silly character and his world “serious” or “mature.”

Alan Moore, Grant Morrison and a few other talented writers embraced all the crazy elements of the Silver Age and told awesome stories. Lesser lights have tried to ignore all those elements and ended up with things neither fun nor mature. I’m hopeful Gunn “gets it” and this turns out to be the most faithful adaptation of unapologetically bonzo Superman Silver and Bronze Age comics ever. The guy can fly and shoot lasers out of his eyes, so this is definitely not our world no matter what approach you take; I say just roll with it and embrace the weirdness.

Likewise it’s encouraging to see the FF movie will feature the Galactus we know and love: a giant humanoid figure in purple wearing on his head a bucket with tuning fork appendages. If you’re going to bring a comic book to the screen, have the guts to go all in.

I’ve never been (and I don’t hink I ever will be) very much into Superman (always been a Batman guy, but didn’t care much about the recent incarnations). When I first heard about Krypto back in the days, honestly, I thought it was a hoax. A SuperDog? Sounded like something that would fit into an Adam West Batman episode, but for Supes? :flushed:

Besides, everything super that can be done by dogs has been done before.

Lassie was our childhood superdog.

Yet, Krypto can fly.

Yes, thank goodness Batman would never stoop to the “crime fighting dog” fad.

Wonder what became of him? :face_with_monocle:

Things I like about Superman (2025):

Both Kents alive. Less depressing, opening up more character potential.
Clark being the real persona. That’s always made the most sense.
The film looks bright and fully embracing of a comic atmosphere.
Key themes such as interventionism are still being discussed.
Superman has more personality and is less stoic.
Superman seems less God-like and more approachable.
This is Superman Returns done right. Reeve bedrock, new timeline.
The commentary on our age of social media and narcissism.
Lex is the centre of Superman villainy but other foes are also present.
The action looks good and I love the technological Fortress.
Krypto is a needed new addition to the films and definitely adds charm.
Other heroes being present highlight who Superman is and his methods.
This meets a growing appetite for less brooding and feel good adventure.
