Movies: Presumably 2025, maybe Beyond

Looks like they’re scrapping everything and starting over. Fine by me.

And Gunn adores Donner‘s film, so… yeah!

Something about a pot and a kettle…

And I think he is wrong. Linda Hamilton was great, Arnold always will be the Terminator, but the story could not figure out a way to make these tropes exciting again.

And who was the mastermind behind that story? Naw, he wouldn’t blame him, would he?

Very meta. Will HBO really pay for a series?

I am intrigued.

What ad based streaming service is it going to?

I gather Kilter films pointing out that Westworld’s format isn’t fit for the ad break model was it’s death sentence.

I love Ianucci´s work - so this might turn out very funny and poignant.

But… HBO?

Reading the latest Superman news is depressing. I wasn’t interested the prospect of another Henry Cavil Superman film, but I’m not interested in a reboot either. This current age of franchises is just going round in circles. If at first you don’t succeed reboot and try the same thing again.

Meanwhile the behind the scenes drama at DC continues to be more a compelling story that most of their films.

What would the third option be?

That’s my problem, as a film franchise Superman is so broken right now there’s nothing that will get me excited. The third option is to let things rest for a while. I hear people talk about how it’s been almost 10 years since Man of Steel (and 5 years since the original release of Justice League) like it’s an age but in terms of the lifespan of a film franchise it just doesn’t feel that long.
What can a reboot even achieve at this point? The bits and pieces I’m hearing right now is that while it won’t be an origin it will be rooted in his early years, which still means it’ll be going over familiar story beats and new version of known characters.
I’ll just keep enjoying Superman on the small screen.

I think Gunn made the right decision to end every connection to the Snyder-movies and to start fresh.

It´s a little bit similar to EON deciding to reboot with CR and ending the (then) popular Brosnan tenure. They needed another actor to mark a new era, and they needed a younger one for the story.

Gunn wisely did not announce a complete origin story but a focus on the younger Clark Kent working as a reporter - basically the start of the third section of SUPERMAN - THE MOVIE.

This way, we get the chance to start fresh but right in the middle of the action, with Superman beginning and being thrown into the adventure.

This really can be very exciting, charming and funny - just like Superman needs to be.

Totally. The Flash does seem to be the last hurrah of the Snyderverse. It’s not an era I particularly cared for, but there was occasional brilliant things. It was like Superman 3 in that regard, as a whole not good, but no-one can deny the quality of Reeves’ performance(s)

The Superman 3 comparison works for me, too!

These films don’t exist in a vacuum though. No matter how good Gunn’s take on Superman is is it’s still coming off the back of a decade of mishandling the character on film (longer if you want to include Superman Returns in that). And that goes for the concept of a DC cinematic universe as a whole too. It’s hard to get excited about a do-over considering how badly they got it wrong the first time. Or should I say second time? Because it’s easy to forget now but the Ryan Reynolds Green Lantern was also supposed to kick off a DC cinematic universe. They even had Angela Bassett as Amanda Waller who was supposed to do the Nick Fury part. But maybe DC Universe V.3 will be the one where they get it right?
It’s especially frustrating for be because while a most of it was bad there were parts I liked. I really enjoyed Aquaman, Shazam and Wonder Woman (even if 1984 missed the mark) and it’s a shame to see those franchises cut short in the name of a universe wide reboot, a victim of the failures of their peers.

People keep talking about Marvel fatigue but I’m far more fatigued on DC right now.

Or maybe they really should have tried a storyline we didn´t have in 5 movies and 3 tv shows…just for once…only to surprise some fans who are a bit older than 9…but I guess that would have been too adventurous for DC

DC is such a mess right now that it’s hard to have any faith that they’re going in a direction that is worth paying attention to. I’ll tune in for JOKER 2, but that aside, there’s nothing on the horizon for DC that seems like it will be worth the time of day.

I am always happy to see a good Superman movie (by the way, I even loved „Superman returns“).

So, yes, keep trying to get it right, DC.

Do I need another studio trying to build their ongoing machine spewing out comic book adaptations? Not at all. I would even welcome Marvel to say: okay, we have done enough, goodbye.

But apart from that, why should anyone stop endeavors after mishaps and failures?

And who will remember those failed films? The general audience will not.

In the end, it all comes down to this: if the next DC movie is good, people will watch it. If not, on to the next one.

Like, with Bond…
