Movies: Presumably 2025, maybe Beyond

Strangely, when I see this all I can think of is Gosling breaking character in the original Saturday Night Live alien abduction skit.

I really hope that stand-alone Star Wars film will be different, fresh and exciting. I like Gosling a lot, and maybe this is the funny Star Wars film the original idea for SOLO wanted to be.

But to set it five years after TROS already makes me doubtful. It will have tons of callbacks to that era.

As for The Mandalorian - I enjoyed the first two seasons. And the story was finished. Season three reheated a lot, and now, since it was the only really widely successful content of the Star Wars Disney complex (Andor was not a huge hit despite earning great reviews), they are putting all their hopes on the big screen version.

But really, what else can it be but another reheating of all the leftovers? The description of the footage already sounds like a check list for quoting the original trilogy.

I think Gosling is one of the best actors of his generation, and deserves the success he has. Since 2012’s The Place Beyond the Pines, he’s been on my A list.

I have no worry that he’ll be up of the task. Instead, I hope that this isn’t yet another half-baked Star Wars production to tarnish his résumé. That time setting especially makes me wince.

Since 2005, I’ve wanted a story about a singleton Star Wars starfighter pilot, operating on an On-Call basis, with a stashed starfighter near by, pouncing on opportunities when they come, taking official orders otherwise. Maybe this is it.

The end of Mandalorian’s 2nd season is where I got off the bus. Some trusted reviews of the 3rd season were enough for me to not continue. And I think you’re right about the motivation behind the movie.

Three cheers for Andor! Forever grateful for Tony Gilroy.

And I enjoyed Skeleton Crew very much. Joe Watts showed that engaging entertainment for all ages is possible (again).

That’s the main thing that gives me hope for the project. For too long, Star Wars has been stuck in its own past, a seemingly endless cycle of prequels and interquels that rewrite the mythos instead of writing the next chapter. It’s been 6 years since Rise of Skywalker was released, I’m ready for what comes next.
The fact that it’s going to focus on an original character is also a positive sign. If they announce that it will feature no returning cast members or cameos, then this may be the project to get me back into Star Wars.

I’ve misunderstood. I thought Gosling’s new show would be during the same era as The Mandalorian, which I am not a fan of. I agree that beyond the 3rd trilogy would be a more interesting time setting.

Though, I still believe that Luke Skywalker’s immediate post-Return of the Jedi adventures & ascendance not being portrayed on screen are a criminal waste. While they are doing alchemy to warp Timothy Zahn’s Thrawn Trilogy, they should also have tried Matt Stover’s Luke Skywalker & the Shadows of Mindor.

I’m looking forward to this more than I should.

So, a pretty blatant National Treasure rip-off, which was itself a pretty blatant rip-off of Clive Cussler’s Dirk Pitt book series. I’ll probably still watch it just for Krasinski, who is pretty effortlessly likeable. And I’m curious to see him in action mode for a whole movie. Guy Ritchie should make it palatable at least.

… while we were talking about film posters in the other thread…

It’s a nuisance.

So just like virtually every movie poster nowadays. They’re a dime a dozen, each as interchangeable and forgettable as the next. No originality, no style, no eye-popping visuals, no intrigue, no heart, no good. Just blah.

There have been some wonderful fan made posters in recent years. Wouldn’t it be great if they were to hire someone like London-based artist Mark Murphy to come up with something in the style of the classics? Perhaps it wouldn’t be used as the main poster, but just having an official stamp on something like that would be a nice gesture by Bond’s new custodians.

If one also would have had a crossbow in one’s hand it would have reminded me of another one.
