Movies: Presumably 2025, maybe Beyond

Which is why I’m actually still marginally interested in DC films, while I have completely lost all interest in the MCU production line!

Oh, I can understand that. This week I watched CAPTAIN MARVEL and BLACK WIDOW on the same evening. It went by like a mild summer breeze, not much impact, no surprises. I have already forgotten most of what I’ve seen.

On the other hand, these productions have a tried and tested just-add-water standardised Marvel plot and you can see why that still attracts audiences - they want exactly this familiar mildly funny/mildly exciting popcorn action mix.

Whereas I’m not sure this Bat-thingy will be a big feel good performance.

So DC thought “this” would be more interesting than Ben Affleck vs. Joe Manganiello? Catwoman No. 4 and a guy who looks like a clerk?

Yes, another Catwoman too. It’s not really awfully daring in its personnel…

I’m not even sure that it has to be that, but surely there’s a middle ground between what Marvel is doing and whatever this is supposed to be.

As everyone knows, I’m completely down for a full-on depressing take on whatever character we’re talking about, so that’s not the issue. The issue is that this just looks ridiculous.

I just re-checked at Wicki…the list of Batman-villains is longer than both our arms. With a new Batman you could have done anything from serial killer detective case to mystery voodoo horror film, the members of The League of Assassins alone would make for a trilogy…it´s really sad

That’s the saddest part about all of this. I was really looking forward to seeing Affleck take this thing on, both in front of and behind the camera. I have no doubt that The Batman as envisioned by Affleck would have been something special. It was bad enough that it was cast aside, but to be cast aside for this.

Yeah, looks a bit like something found under the cutting table from Daredevil…

As someone who is known in these precincts for not understanding or often watching Marvel/DC films, I am looking forward to all the astute comments/analysis here, which invariably give me more pleasure than the movies ever did/do.

I was looking forward to this, based on Reeves‘ Planet of the Apes-movies.

But this trailer leaves me disappointed.

I don‘t get the impression of a new take on Bruce Wayne. The Penguin is just a guy in prosthetics - why did they want Colin Farrell for this if they could have gotten a great actor who already looks like this? And the Riddler… well, how menacing, this question mark in the foam… yawn.

It all looks competent and effective, just like big budget films look these days. But take away the insistent chords of that LISTEN TO ME soundtrack it would all just lay there.

I hope a second trailer will improve all this. But right now my expectations have dropped considerably.

I liked it but I don’t get why they are only advertising the tone of the film. Chinatown and The Long Good Friday are the film influences for the tone…Year One and Ego are the comic influences for the tone…”they’ve gone fantastical but tonally…” I still know nothing about the actual story they’re telling.

Like Richard Kind, who looks exactly like that…and would’ve been cheaper…

Wow, absolutely. And inspired casting that would have been.

Looks sensational to me. Can’t wait to see it.

After having watched it a second time I must say: it even repeats imagery and the color scheme of the Nolan trilogy - maybe that’s why I am so underwhelmed.

I was hoping for a really new approach - and the first teaser a few months ago did a much better job at conveying that.

If this film only repeats Bruce Wayne being angry and not caring about himself, with Catwoman flirty but admiring and the villains psychos, all wrapped up in a nighttime industrial city… why bother?

This is what Bond really does so much better: every actor brings something new to the table, and the movies look accordingly different.

A ferocious young Batman operating in an atmospheric Gotham City, not tied down with retelling the origins. It’s going to be a pure detective story narrated by Pattinson. As a Batman fan, this is exactly the type of movie I’m wanting, and many others are expressing the same sentiment.

In the interest of saying something nice I did love that final shot. Viewing Batman from the perspective of someone in an upturned car making him appear upside down (like a bat) was actually pretty clever.
But other than that I’m feeling this is more of the same. Another grounded, gritty take, prototype gear etc. When they rebooted Batman I was hoping for a bit more of a departure from what we’d seen before.
If I could pitch a Batman project then I’d go with Batman as horror and explore some of the more monstrous villains like Clayface and Manbat.

and perhaps a more interesting choice as well.

The Batman trailer has made me do something that I think is a great sign… I’ve pulled out Year One for a re-read. I’m very excited for it, I think it looks great.
To me it looks very different to what we’ve seen from Burton, Schumacher, Nolan and Synder.
Gotham looks fantastic, Pattinson looks fantastic, Penguin looks fantastic, the Batmobile looks incredible. The trailer is a tad dark at times (ie. hard to see), but I love the ‘red-ness’ of the film.
I’m excited, this looks like something I see in my minds eye reading the comic books.

You aren’t. I have almost no desire to this. I’m intrigued for Zoe Kravitz as Selina Kyle, but that’s about it. WB should leave Batman alone for awhile.
