There is going to be a bonus chapter where Odysseus dreams he’s a character in a film and played by Matt Damon. Translating that never made sense - up to now. 🤷🏼♂️

Often happens. Sarah Ruden redid her well-received translation of The Aeneid. I think Wilson’s work on The Iliad made her aware of where whe could improve on her earlier translation of The Odyssey.
D.W. Griffith never stopped tinkering with INTOLERANCE–to the point that the Museum of Modern Art locked him out so he could not alter their print any further.

I get it. They need to spread optimism. And it is a good sign that many people decided to still go to the cinema.
But how healthy is cinema really if only Spider-Man and Toy Story 5 saved the day? Yes, the outlier was „The Odyssey“ which overperformed spectacularly. But even that was a sequel in its way, the next from the Nolan brand. And the horror films, yes, they were pretested as internet sensations, too.
And while it is fun to see other sequels and comic book heroes bomb, too, look for all the original stand-alone movies this summer.
Right. The very few underperformed or bombed.
The lesson here is a sad one: only brands and IPs have a chance anymore, and they don’t have to be good movies („Prada 2“) to succeed, they just have to look glitzy and feature fan favourites.
The state of cinema is the equivalent of a dumb billionaire after the umpteenth plastic surgery grinning like the Joker.

We’ll see! I remember when I was a teenager I only watched Bond movies until my friends invited me to go see Hot Fuzz, dangling the casting of Timothy Dalton in front of me to get me to go. After that movie and cinema experience completely knocked my socks off for a list of reasons (including the fact that Dalton is superb in it) I began to venture further afield and go to more movies, increasingly becoming more adventurous with the subject matter and being rewarded for it time and again with memorable experiences. My hope is that as the younger crowd finds joy in watching their favorite superhero fair on the big screen, they may similarly feel inclined to seek out other experiences like I did.
One can hope, anyway.

They would have to seek those out on streaming or physical media because the real interesting stuff of earlier times is rarely shown on the big screen anymore.
But, as you say, hope is always a good thing. Even if it is the one with the feathers.

I suppose I will watch it simply for the genius idea to mix biopic and outright remake. It’s more daring than most other offerings by the studio industry these days. There’s a fair chance this may go belly-up, the original was 50 years ago and its backstory may not interest younger audiences. Plus, that Stallone/Rocky accent needs tuning down four notches. But I wish them luck and hope it’s an entertaining film.

I guess the real question is to what degree the future of movies will be depend on the cinema experience. Many purists believe it is essential but I don’t fall into that category. I have a nice 4K TV with a good surround system. Going to the cinema is now a rarity for me as I am happy with my home viewing experience and don’t think I am alone. If we could have gotten tickets to a true Imax theatre showing of the Odyssey, we would have gone. But I have not been to the movies this year and normally only go for Bond and a few other things I happen to be into at the time (e.g., Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, Mission Impossible).
Before the rise of home theatres, going to the movies was a must as the pre-HD TVs were not that great of an experience especially in comparison to the cinema experience. All industries face huge changes when technological advancements come along. To me, the real question is the ability of studios to generate sufficient revenue for movies predominantly viewed at home. That will be particularly true for new creations that do not come with a built in audience.

I agree to the degree that I rarely dare to subject myself to cinema audiences who do all that annoying stuff, projection failure and/or sound systems that are turned up to eleven with tinnitus-inducing power, while my stomach turns due to a thousand popcorn flavours, nachos splashing sauces, or pizzas and tacos being brought from home.
But even while I enjoy 4k presentations in the comfort of my home the cinema experience I grew up with cannot be beaten.
Nor replicated in these times, sadly.
