The book has the advantage of being at once a tale of empowerment in the face of a global catastrophe - that is in fact cosmic - and being removed from culture wars and denial of reality that’s the current fad of snake oil salesmen. It’s ultimately a tale of dedication, empathy and the power of science wrapped into 2.5 hours of intelligent entertainment that doesn’t need you to have, or get, a physics degree to enjoy it. It takes the audience seriously regardless of their backgrounds and walks of life and spins a yarn they can relate to.
Plus, Lord and Miller seem to have been the ideal team to bring this to the screen for Gosling.
John Malkowich in R.E.D. - mode, I have to see this…
A post was merged into an existing topic: What Movie Have You Seen Today?
Biggest opening by a non-franchise film in March, Amazon MGM’s biggest opening for any film to date, and the second-biggest opening for a non-franchise film ever.
Looking forward to this very much.
Haven’t seen it, nor do I have much interest in it, but based on the reviews, the box office, and such, it’s good to see that Amazon is capable of coming up with a quality film that is both a critical success as well as something that people clearly want to see.
And Amy Pascal produced it, as well. Good signs, indeed.
Can’t say I had this on my bingo card…
Are we sure they didn’t post this a week early?
My thought exactly.
The No.1 expert on Tolkien…
Yes, love this.
That’s pretty awesome.
We’re officially at the point where we’re running the Stephen King well dry.
Pennywise is going to have his own late night talk show by the end of the decade, at this rate.
Some say he has even been running for President.
The funny thing about that is King has an extensive body of work, but we keep getting adaptations of the same stories over and over again.
Cregger might be misstepping here after two strong films to start his career. Not sure what to think about his next two films (this and Resident Evil) when he’s had such a strong start to his career with Barbarian and Weapons. Hopefully he can make the best of it. A prequel to Weapons is entirely unnecessary and would, I think, dilute the strangeness of that film that works very much in its favor.
The real thing to be watching for on the horror front, though, is the upcoming film Backrooms. I didn’t know that it even existed prior to his week, but the trailer they put out is creepy. Will definitely be on the lookout for that one.
Yeah, it’s another way-too-late sequel. But, it’s also the long awaited return of Rick Moranis to the big screen, so that in itself makes the project worthwhile.
I have mixed feelings about that. Actors who stay away for sustained durations and then decide to end the drought years later are often met with content that ends up being forgettable anyway. He lasted this long away from the business. Unless it’s for money or sentimentality due to age it’s usually best to stay away and keep the past preserved.
