Simon - definitely think you’re being a little harsh!

Said earlier in the thread - have seen American Animals and was very impressed. Agreed that he’s a director at the start of his career rather than later, and so if there was concern it would be that his resume was light. That he was a documentary film-maker, no wouldn’t concern me. Apted was I know, but that’s also how Lewis Gilbert started.

That makes a great deal of sense.

I feel the same way, but under these circumstances (particularly if theSpectre is correct), they probably have no option but to call in the guys who they know can turn one around. What they turn around may well suck, but what’s a production company to do?

…if they turn in Casino Royale or Skyfall again (both apparently are mostly them), I’m fine.

As I ponder all this on a daily basis, I’m actually getting more excited than doubtful about things. With Bond films, the real gems come about when there’s a crunch time frame. Having the boys brought back in and working (presumably) with their own framework/plot and the mutual familiarity combined with the overall willingness to deliver the goods for the 25th official chapter and Daniel’s farewell really has me believing we’re going to get something damn good if not great.

I’m happy to have them back, honestly. They’ve done great work with Bond. That being said, I really hope Bond 25 is not a direct continuation of Spectre. The retconning of the entire Craig era was a giant misstep and its best left forgotten. Bloferhauser has been captured and Spectre exposed. Move on. Give us an original and fresh story that has the potential of reaching the heights of Casino Royals and Skyfall. After all, those are the 2 Craig films that weren’t written as direct sequels and they work so much better than QoS or SP.

I like your attitude. :+1:

I think P+W were always going to be back in the picture at this point.

Meanwhile… (even for me its a little on the nose)djt

The documentary filmmaker Bart Layton would be perfect to direct that story, since it’ll likely be based on fact.

I seriously doubt this. Wish I’m proved wrong.

But i probably won’t be.

Completely agree. A final stand alone adventure not connected or (very, very loosely connected) to the rest of the Craig films. Though I have some lingering fear we’ll just be getting Spectre part 2.

Who really knows who did what on past scripts, as some here have reasonably made clear. So whoever screwed things up in the past, here’s my non-accusatory advice for P&W.

Most of all i hope they can try harder to avoid the on-the-nose and very arch dialogue; the hackneyed stuff that bond, his supporting characters and nemesis say because they’re in a ‘Bond movie’. Writers being Fleming fans seems to often translate into contriving the characters to say out loud the lines that Fleming would never have. The tone and atmos does this - trust the director etc, rather than have the characters spew the cheesy tropes so that every nuance is rammed down our throats.

It’ll also be a bonus if they can avoid plot holes and characters doing unmotivated things that they’re characters would never do because the writers, or the producers want the script to get from A to C without bothering with B.

There’s lots of ‘great’ in the CR and SF scripts, but they have their share of naff too. CR gets away with the cheese somewhat because it’s a reboot so the cheesy lines are part of restablishing the formula and they’re done with some wit.

However, everything great in SF feels great because it’s fresh and pertains to that story and it’s themes. The weakenesses are when it contrives to crowbar in the Bondisms, such as the gag with the couple in the tube station saying he’s in a rush to get home. The ejector seat gag with M is good, but we got it without M having to say “go ahead and eject me…” right on the nose - they didn’t have faith in the audience getting it and made something witty into a Carry On gag moment. And SFs plot holes and questionable character motivations aren’t thin on the ground.

What’s really great about CR and SF are Craig, the directors and in the latter the breathtaking cinematography. The scripts are just ok.

I’m hoping for another movie with the quality of Casino Royale.

This may not be popular here but… I really hope we get Spectre part 2. I just don’t see how they can have a stand alone story as if it’s business as normal. The end of Spectre had Bond leave the service: I’m not normally too fussed about direct continuity in Bond films (I thought they got that bang on in the 60s with just loose connections) but this needs addressing. Also, an iconic organisation like Spectre, back after so long needs more than the one film: simply quietly forget the Blofeld/Bond family tree, or even leave Blofeld out for a few films and have Spectre operatives as the lead villains and build Blofeld back up as a shadowy presence like they did in the Connery years. They forgot Quantum, please don’t do the same to Spectre: #justiceforQuantum, #justiceforSpectre. Oh and a return for Mr Hinx would be nice too… best henchman in years!

Very easily. Just brief comments like “sad to hear it didn’t work out with Madeleine, 007. But it’s good to have you back, and Blofeld is still behind bars.”

I think that would come off as rather naff and jarring in an unconnected film. And after waiting for so long for Spectre to return, to bin them off would be tragic: especially in an age where they have never felt more relevant.

While I would love a standalone film I also would consider it weird, after all the trouble they went through to establish continuity within the Craig era, as flimsy and forced as it is.

In the end, getting rid of Blofeld as easily as SPECTRE did was a mistake. Opening up that can of worms in BOND 25 would offer the opportunity to turn SPECTRE into an overture for the real Blofeld story, ending the Craig era on a high note.

In other words: BOND 25 could elevate SPECTRE to be much better.
