Yeah, I wouldn’t give them credit for looking that far ahead.
Umm…been there done that.
We’ve all been tricked. The DC story arc isn’t about James Bond at all. It’s the story of the White family. Disregarding the CR PTS, the first person of any significance we get to see is… Mr White. And the last we get to see are his daughter and granddaughter.
Going back straight to Darwin, White managed to pass on his genes and get two of his offspring through all this, Bond only one. Mr White wins.
Bond’s always been prone to poor decisions when it comes to that, his first choice for father-in-law, too, wasn’t exactly a law-abiding citizen.
SEE! SOMEONE GETS IT!!!
So they do…(f***ing algorithm)
I stand by my belief that the only reason Vesper is buried in Matera, Italy, is because it is a cool place for a car chase… That said, I do like that Vesper’s comment in Casino Royale helps the producers out a bit here: ‘But my family is strict Roman Catholic. So, for appearances sake, it’ll be a two-bedroom suite.’ Roman Catholicism being quite popular in Italy, I presume. So it kinda works that she has heritage in that country. Another retrospective link that works just enough to please.
You might say he was the author of Bond’s pain…
He’s the father of the woman that made Bond love again, and the grandfather of the little girl he literally died for…Bond and White have a complicated relationship…as Madeline tells Matilde a story by referencing that time her dad shot her grandad in the knee…
…or how they once took a pleasant drive through the country together.
If being in the boot whilst being shot at is comfy…sure
I’m now really curious as to how Madeline tells Matilde their family history…
“This is when your grandad mentally tortured your dads ex into suicide…this is when your dad tortured your grandad for help…and this is when your grandad helped your dad so I’d be as safe and you’re grandad could shoot himself”
It’s a an odd family, to say the least
Well, you know, they have people everywhere…
If it means we’ve been spared other Bond deaths I’m okay with their departures as they stand. I really think NTTD’s ending should be a standalone event. From my perspective if it happens once it means a lot more because it stands out against the norm. Bond as a character interestingly straddles the line of being a fantasy figure because of his lifestyle and a tragic hero because of his lifestyle. NTTD pushes things harder into the tragic hero territory.
„You see, your father was… um… he had the sort of job that did not look good on a form. Quite like your granddad, actually. They… had so much in common, really.“
„They were friends?“
„No, not friends. They looked rather differently at the world. I guess it’s a matter of perspective. Anyway,“
„Where is grandpa now?“
„Oh, um…“
„Is he with daddy, in heaven?“
„Well…“
„Nomi said Daddy would be in heaven now.“
„What?“
„When you were crying, on that rock where I felt so cold and bored.“
„You know when we, um, are at the end of our life…“
„How many people die because of rockets?“
„More than you think. But that s not the point I was trying to…“
„Why did Daddy peel me an apple? I hate apples!“
„Since when?“
„Can I have a cookie?“
„Not now, Mathilde. And as I was saying - hey, put down your phone.“
„Why?“
„I am telling you an important story about your father and… stop with that damn phone!“
„No!“
„Mathilde, you don’t want me to get angry again, do you? Or do you want to spend the rest of the drive in the trunk again?“
„If I can keep the phone?“
Comfier than the ride in the actual seat, suspension on that model was terrible
Wow, Madeleine is a much worse mother than I thought.
She´s in a pretty difficult situation.
So I’ve just finished my 5th viewing and am now ready to declare this film a masterpiece.
My favourite segments of the film:
- Safin’s island
- Matera
- Cuba
- London
- Norway
On 2nd viewing, my only real disappointment was the climax. For such a large and impressive set, the climactic action just felt small, and akin to a video game. I understand for story purposes why a commando battle was out, but I feel like the climaxes of the last two (omitting London for an extended sequence at the crater base in SP) would’ve been drastically improved by their inclusion.
Will we ever see one again?
Oh god no.
GET THE CANAVRY!!!
Was awful in 1964, and was equally awful every time they did it after.
I’m unsure whether I like the lack of group fighting at the end of a Bond film or miss this very traditional element.
On the one hand, it can be a rather pointless spectacle with nameless, often even faceless soldiers killing and dying, with only Bond being the one to achieve the goal in the end anyway. It can also depict war as a fun sport for men, glorifying, well, the usual slaughter. And after THUNDERBALL which at least had the very unusual underwater fight, elevating the whole thing to an abstract fantasy, every other final battle was mainly a variation of this (in a volcano, on a mountain, in a tanker, in space and so on). Funnily, DAF by accident offered a deconstruction of this by laying the groundwork for a huge battle - and then abandoning it.
On the other hand, it could be infused with high personal stakes (OHMSS) or a revolution (TSWLM & TLD).
The best final battles, IMO, ended with Bond being in a precarious situation turning tables and getting help, underlining his own struggle as being something of bigger importance.
But at this point, after 25 films, it is impossible to offer a final battle which has not been done before. Which is why the Craig era wisely stayed away from it, IMO.
