However I would put the 3D perspective inside of the Brosnan gunbarrel as an update rather then a complete redesign. There’s been a lot of minor changes to the gunbarrel over the years. The switch from various aspect ratios, putting credits in Lazenby’s opening dots, a shimmery effects on DAF, etc., but they all had the key elements.
I give Casino Royale’s a pass as it was incorporated so brilliantly into the opening credits but the rest of Craig’s gunbarrel’s are disappointing for various reasons. Spectre’s comes the closet but falls short of perfection without the iris out. Honestly the could have put “The dead are alive.” on a poster on a wall and had the gunbarrel iris out from it then pan over to the parade.
Or they could have just done this:
A great fan version.
All I ask of the next iteration of Bond is a consistent gunbarrel from film to film.
Just got back from second viewing of NTTD. After Craig shoots in the gun barrel, his silhouette blurs and fades, kind of inversely from how Skyfall opens. But, and this is key, there’s no blood.
Harry Saltzman suggested Lazenby neal to foreshadow Bond proposing. Bond’s fate is foreshadowed in the very opening.
When I first heard the gun barrel didn’t feature blood, I wasn’t keen on the idea and thought its absence would be too glaring. But when you factor in the transition to the snow it feels very natural. I think Craig’s walk across the screen could be his best here, too.
