Do you agree it was a reboot? Diamonds are forever took place right after You only live twice so that would explain why Bond and Blofeld didn’t recognize each other because it was a reboot just like Casino Royale. We could also argue that For your eyes only takes place right after On her majesty secret service because those 2 films were independent from the other bond films until the reboot of Casino Royale.

It wasn’t a reboot. All of the Bond films are essentially independent from the others, not just _On Her Majesty’s Secret Service_ and _For Your Eyes Only_.

What would a reboot actually do? What is its raison d’être; what does it achieve?
I think the sole reason of a reboot is to declare: this is a new story. Nothing we will see is related to anything we’ve seen before.
Looking at ON HER MAJESTY’S SECRET SERVICE there are plenty of references to what we’ve seen before, visual references as well as actual dialogue. Everything about this film demands this is the Bond we’ve observed for years now.
So by that measure I think, no, can’t really see ON HER MAJESTY’S as a reboot any more than any other film before it.

OHMSS is not a reboot. Several, if not, all of the previous films are directly referenced in the film.

Agreed. I don’t have my 40 yr. old copy available but John Brosnan’s James Bond in Cinema specifically uses George’s cleaning out 007 desk with mementos from Dr. No, FRWL, and Thunderball as an example. Paraphasing “Yes it a different face, but he’s still 007.”

Footage from YOLT is shown in the title sequence, although I choose to view that as the filmic past being rewound, rather than commenting on continuity. Lazenby was the new beginning.

Both characters had plastic surgery - Bond to aid Operation Bedlam, Blofeld to aid the noble progeny thing.
DAF is then a prequel to early days operation Bedlam…

Other than the current era, I just take each flick on its own merits and disregard everything before and after: that works fine for me as long as the villain is evil, the girls are glamorous and the stunts are outrageous.

I think there Bond movies are a combination of reboot, continuation, and response to the cultural moment. It has been the successful manipulation of these elements that has allowed to franchise to succeed for so long.
For example, one could say that Moore Bond was both rebooted and continued from TMWTGG to TSWLM, with the additional rebooting of the concept of the Bond girl (which was also a response to a cultural moment).

This is the best theory that I would never though of and I would like to think of it like this because it makes the most sense why bond and blofeld didn’t recognize each other and also why bond was acting like Tracy death didn’t happen in diamonds are forever.
