I worked on the idea that if I were to be stuck on a desert island with x number of Bond films which x would I take (i.e. 1 - DAF; 2 - DAF, TB; 3 - DAF, TB, FRWL; etc). I’ll probably come back later and edit it to put LIVE AND LET DIE (which is absolute _art_) higher.

SKYFALL and SPECTRE are probably better than I’ve placed them, but I haven’t watched then since seeing them on release and don’t feel particularly compelled to. I don’t like the increasingly self-referential, self-reverential, self-congratulatory, self-celebratory nature of the recent films. Like many other long-running “franchises” today (the chief offender being, I think, new Doctor Who), the James Bond series has become a monument to itself.

Interesting ranking - and, man, DAF on top? I should watch that film again! I remember that I at first was lukewarm about it, then I loved it, then I fell out of love with it… next time I probably will enjoy it again!

And I agree on your assessment of the “self-reverential”-aspect!

That’s why I can’t ever participate in these things. At best it’s a snapshot, and even then I can only ever list my top 3 or 4 faves, and the 3 or 4 at the very bottom. Everything else just sort of floats around in the middle in no particular order.

Having said that, FRWL, TSWLM and OHMSS are always in the top 5. After that it gets messy.

My top 0014:

1. THUNDERBALL
2. THE LIVING DAYLIGHTS
3. MOONRAKER
4. ON HER MAJESTY’S SECRET SERVICE
5. CASINO ROYALE
6. FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE
7. YOU ONLY LIVE TWICE
8. OCTOPUSSY
9. GOLDFINGER
10. DOCTOR NO
11. THE MAN WITH THE GOLDEN GUN
12. THE SPY WHO LOVED ME
13. DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER
14. LICENCE TO KILL

Many of them are within a hairline of each other. Essentially all the films from the golden, classical 1960s era, TLD and CR(the 2 best Bond films of the last 30 years IMHO) and my top 4 Roger Moore Bond films basically constitute my top 0012. I rank my top 005 by my favorite individual actor’s Bond film in the order of how I rank my top 005 Bond actors.

Not sure about the order of the rest but my bottom 003 are pretty much set(for now) at A VIEW TO A KILL, THE WORLD IS NOT ENOUGH and QUANTUM OF SOLACE.

Interesting to see the way Brosnan’s legacy is shaping up here, so far. Or rather, failing to. As ever, GE seems to rate the highest, but it only cracks the top 10 for one respondent, and everyone else has it no higher than 15.

Possibly this is because not enough Brozza fans have transitioned to the new boards? Or maybe, as I suspect, it’s because in the long run he’ll be neither the most loved nor the most hated Bond, just the most “meh.”

I enjoy Brosnan as Bond (and in other roles) very much.

I also don´t subscribe to the point of view that he just got the bad films during the tenure. In fact, TND is splendid entertainment and grew on me with each subsequent viewing. TWINE lost its allure for me, in contrast. And DAD - well, I can enjoy it, too, a lot despite its shortcomings.

In the end, Brosnan can´t rise above his predecessors for me because he seems (IMHO) to emulate their styles rather than developing his own. Which is unfair, of course, because the basic qualities MovieBond can have were already explored by Connery, Lazenby, Moore and Dalton.

Which naturally leaves the question: what did Craig achieve then?

Well, I think that Craig brought one new quality: he did not look like Bond at all. In that respect he was the Anti-Brosnan. Still, he pulled off the job because he brought back Connery´s brutal ruthlessness and danger, and turned it to eleven. That is probably what he will be remembered for. While Brosnan is remembered for bringing back success after the long hiatus.

I hadn’t considered the possibility that Craig’s unconventional (for Bond) looks may have actually _contributed_ to his casting, but it’s an interesting idea.

As you say, Brosnan failed to make much of an impact because he was sort of a walking “greatest hits” package of what went before, as opposed to anything radical or fresh. I believe if you’d had a police sketch artist draw up a picture of “James Bond” in 1994 based on the combined descriptions of thousands of daydreaming fans, you’d end up with something that looked, walked and talked like Brosnan.

And yet, that’s also what keeps him from standing out, in the end: turns out you can only get so far building your 007 from a kit. So maybe it was intentional that they went entirely, 100% in the opposite direction with Craig, picking a guy who looked the absolute least like anyone’s conception of how James Bond “should” look. Anyway, it got _my_ attention: I had sworn off Bond after DAD and if Brosnan had stayed on for another, it would’ve been the first I’d missed in the theater since 1979… not because I hated Brosnan, but because it would have signaled a continuation of the status quo, which had become (for me) unwatchable.

When Brosnan was cast, I think the reaction was something along the lines of “well, duh…” He was the safe, obvious choice, whereas when Craig was cast, the reaction was more, “Say what?!? Okay, you’re going to have to sell me on this one.” It raised the interest level. People showed up because he was so different, just to see how it could possibly work, and in more than a few cases, to watch him fail so they could say “I told you so.” It was a very gutsy, ingenious move.

I don’t want to give the impression I hate Brosnan, because I don’t. But out of all the Bond films, I consider his the most expendable; the ones you could skip entirely without really missing anything. I actually loved TND on first viewing and went back less than a week later to watch it again. Partly this is because I got in to a free preview the first time and wanted to make sure Eon got at least a little of my money. In 89 I won tickets to LTK and saw it for free: I never went back for another viewing and then Bond was “dead” for 6 years. I felt responsible. 😄

I don’t necessarily dislike Brosnan’s Bond films. I like TND and GE quite a bit. It’s just a case of preferring other films in the franchise.

@freemo: Thank you, sir! Yes, I definitely fall into the made fans category.

@David_M: I appreciate it! As I was going through, though, I realized more and more that my list was drastically different from most that have been poster.

As far as my love (or lack thereof) for FYEO stems from as far back as I can remember. The weak villains are what always did it in for me. The pace is snail slow and even some of the action, to me, is quite lacking. With that said, I continue to give it a chance, because I like it as a Roger Moore movie because it was different, and I really like Columbo.

@Dustin: I guess it never really clicked for me as a Roger Moore era Bond film. You put Timothy Dalton in it, and then we’re talking. Otherwise, I just felt like it was pretty out of place.
