Rank your favourite Bond films

Possibly the secret sauce of its success and longevity.

I was reading this thread a lot, so had to join! Love seeing the variety of favorites and rankings. I’ll say for me, Octopussy has become a big fav, so I was always looking for where that placed for people. It seemed to be around #10 a lot, but hey that’s pretty solid. For me it might be top 3!

I’m gonna rewatch a lot of Bond movies in the next few months is my plan. So I’ll save a full definitive for me list until after. But for now, here’s my current top 10 favs.

  1. The Spy Who Loved Me
  2. Octopussy
  3. GoldenEye
  4. Casino Royale (2006)
  5. License to Kill
  6. The Living Daylights
  7. Goldfinger
  8. For Your Eyes Only
  9. Live and Let Die
  10. Tomorrow Never Dies

So, thats my stuff right there. On the summer playlist for BBQs last year, I put pretty much every 80s Bond theme on there. I just love the vibe of those movies, Moore and Dalton.

And GoldenEye is the big nostalgic one for me, that was the cool new one when I was a kid. And also big nostalgia for Casino Royale, that hit when I was going to the theater almost every week, and it was very much my jam for that time.

Wow! I don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone else with a list so similar to mine! The order is different, but out of your top 10, you have NINE of the same films as me with only Live And Let Die being the exception–and it’s my #11! :astonished:

The only one you don’t have that is in my top 10 is Diamonds Are Forever. I can’t believe we’re so similar.

Here’s my top 11:

  1. Licence To Kill
  2. Octopussy
  3. For Your Eyes Only
  4. GoldenEye
  5. The Spy Who Loved Me
  6. Tomorrow Never Dies
  7. Casino Royale
  8. Goldfinger
  9. The Living Daylights
  10. Diamonds Are Forever
  11. Live And Let Die

Great minds think alike!

Octopussy is fun but there’s also a serious film underneath it all. Bond is in desperate situations quite often which allows for a great character showcase. It has two of the best examples of his calculated risk taking with the auction and Khan’s lucky dice.

The sneaking around the palace and the jungle escape show his surveillance and evasion techniques, and later sneaking onto the train to confront Orlov. Bond is properly angry there. The drive to the circus feels very real world to me, especially with the kids goading him with a ride.

Bond kills Grischka with aggression and the clown disguise is tense, not funny. This is telegraphed early in the film when 009 crashes through the window with a knife in his back. Maud Adams being age appropriate also adds something to the film. It would’ve been a very fine conclusion to the Moore era.

Great points sharpshooter. :+1: I agree on all of them.

As do I, Octopussy is fine cold war thriller, but it’s the fun moments that keep me coming back!

That rules! Great to see every Bond movie have its fans here, lot of variety to choose from.

Since we already had this ranking thread, there was no need to create a new one. So I went as far back as the release of No Time To Die and tallied up everyone’s rankings that had posted one since then. If someone supplied more than one ranking by updating their previous entry, I only counted the most recent ranking. And in the case of secretagentfan, his original list included Never Say Never Again, but his updated list did not. As a result, I slipped NSNA into the same rank as his original list onto the updated list and moved every other entry from that position and below it down a slot.

So without further ado, here were the results of the 16 people who supplied full rankings:

  1. ON HER MAJESTY’S SECRET SERVICE – Peter Hunt – with a cumulative score of 84 points for a 5.3 average. (Highest ranking 1st – Yellow-Pinky, sharpshooter, ChrissBond007 / lowest ranking 14th – Double-OhAgent)

Films that did NOT make anyone’s top 10 lists – A View To A Kill, Die Another Day

Films that did NOT make anyone’s bottom 10 lists – On Her Majesty’s Secret Service

Films that topped people’s lists – Dr. No, From Russia With Love, Goldfinger, On Her Majesty’s Secret Service, Diamonds Are Forever, The Spy Who Loved Me, Moonraker, Licence To Kill, Casino Royale, No Time To Die

Films that were on the bottom of people’s lists – Live And Let Die, Moonraker, A View To A Kill, Licence To Kill, The World Is Not Enough, Die Another Day, SPECTRE, No Time To Die

Films that were at both the top AND bottom of people’s lists – Moonraker, Licence To Kill, No Time To Die

It just further goes to show that there really is a Bond film for everybody and an unpopular one that somebody will love and vice versa.
