Reboot? Remake? Retro? Which direction should the series take next?

MK agreed. I’d offer it’s potentially the best in the series, especially on an OPS scale (that being the "ooofs per second, a little-known measurement used in evaluating action scenes…). And if the alternative is SP’s, which for me is neither suspenseful, spectacular, or even particularly funny, I’ll take the crunchathon (another little used descriptor of action scenes) of the QoS PTS any day of the week.

That’s where the editing style works the best. Apart from the 5 years later wording after the title sequence, NTTD lacks any location notifications. QoS was really creative in that regard.

Yeah I really liked those location titles with different fonts. I wished they had continued.

Forster used some(one) called MK12 for the credits and title cards. I know there is a discussion somewhere on the boards discussing Kleinmenn, I will confess that at the time I felt both parts of QoS a little jarring - as if they were almost a knock-off or a counterfeit of what we’re supposed to get. And yet as the film has aged, I really appreciate the fact that their (his/her) effects are unique. Title sequence especially, considering that IMHO the last three all basically feel like the same thing over and over (no different than Binder, whose last truly original effort was LALD, or if you’re judging on a super-tough curve, OHMSS).

MK12 is a graphic design company based in the US. They had about 8 people working on QoS, plus a crew to shoot the titles.

They definitely did better than Binder’s titles for the Dalton films. Those were definitely phoned in…

I agree with this. It’s a beautiful thing with the Bond series that often when the latest film tries ‘new’ things - ideas, approaches etc, they are often jarring and cause division with fans. But often as more entries pass the film is looked back on more fondly.
The title sequence of QoS is certainly one of those instances for me. I honestly have not loved any of the last 3 sequences as they all felt a bit dull and repetitive to me. The QoS sequence, while I didn’t much care for it originally, has definitely grown on me. Probably my second favourite of Craig’s.

The co-founder of MK12 also wrote an excellent article on Bond title sequences for The Art of the Title.

I agree that Binder’s titles for the Dalton films are his weakest, but the article makes an interesting point:

Binder’s final Bond entry, Licence to Kill (1989), is the most sophisticated of his sequences from a technical standpoint. He returns again to many of his favorite themes, but with a much cleaner and more refined execution. This is certainly due in part to rapid advancements in film technology at the end of the decade, with nonlinear editing and digital compositing fast replacing the analog solutions he had mastered over his 23-year tenure with the franchise. Ironically, only at the the advent of the digital age did it become apparent that many themes frequented by Binder — his silhouettes, image composites, and creative titling — were ideas often several decades ahead of the technological means.

Someone I talked to whosaw it quite vehemently believed that the next movie would be about Bond’s daughter being a spy and apparently their friends agreed that was definitely what they were teasing in the ending (??) so who knows?

For me, I think we will see a reboot, it all depends on Amazon a bit and what sort of budget they’re willing to give it & the influence they try to impart on proceedings - I do think Babs/EON will want to continue the dramatic, serious Bond approach though. I think positioning Bond as the “thinking man’s” spy movie and leaving the Moonraker/DAD stuff to Mission Impossible and Fast/Furious 2000 or Marvel for that matter is probably smart and the point of difference it has instead of bringing a knife to a gunfight.

Think we either get: traditional reboot with younger Bond… OR the (slightly) wild prediction is: they wait a bit before settling on a new long term Bond and let big names do event one-shots with their interpretation of Bond, ie: Nolan, Boyle that might not have worked for the main series and gives them time to find a new way forward long term post Craig… perhaps a Young Bond adaptation (series) for Prime Video alongside

I do.

Because someone I talked to who saw it quite vehemently believed that the next movie would be about James Bond being a spy and apparently their friends agreed that was definitely what they were teasing in the ending (!!) because… it said James Bond will return… and because… EON is in the business of making James Bond films… and Amazon wants James Bond films… and world wide audiences want James Bond films.

So, rest assured: someone you talked to and their friends really should not bet any money on their opinion.

I’d recommend to stay away from such people and their friends, or, if not possible, at least don’t heed their advice.

It´s for sure the most realistic (and as someone who had two car accidents i know what I´m talking about) and albeit definitely influenced by the final Bourne Supremacy car chase it´s up there with the best ones in the Bond series…

If only one could see exactly what’s happening in that scene.

Play it at 0.25 speed if you want to.
But isn’t that sort of the point of this editing style? I mean, to make you feel as if you were embedded? Because if you were, you would not see everything, but have short, powerful flashes.

This is a good point. With Craig’s arc is seems like we were at the beginning and then all of a sudden at the very end.

I put this in the This or That game thread, but these were 2 angles that I thought of for the next Bond movie in 5 years’ time. I’m only half joking with these, so please let me know your thoughts:-

Risico (2026)

A dark, almost anime-like spy thriller, filmed entirely in black & white, Bond is given his 007 status literally in the dark shadows of a gothic-looking London underworld. He traces a number of mask-wearing villains, in a violent, stylish film noir.

or

High Time To Kill (2026)

A bright, breezy almost comic caper involving many stunts, and over the top characters. Has the look of The Man from UNCLE crossed with Octopussy. Lots of great fights and stunts, not so much plot. Wonderful sunny locations, starting with a PTS on and around Sydney Opera House, followed by Madagascar, Spain and finally New York.

James Bond anime would be great - idk if Batman By Gaslight/Sin City Bond is the right take for that but would welcome Bond animated in some way

If you’re doing Bond as animation then you’d need to to be something that couldn’t be achieved in live action for whatever reason. And I have the perfect pitch:
All The Time In The World - Starring George Lazenby
The plot would be exactly what you’d expect, a true sequel to On Her Majesty’s Secret Service centered on Bond and Draco hunting for Blofeld after Tracy’s death. Irma Bunt would be positioned as the main villain and would be the subject of the final confrontation on SPECTRE Island (to resolve another lose end).
Animation would allow you to recreate the likenesses of actors and vocal stand ins would fill out the rest of the cast.

I don’t see this as Bond 26 but it could be a cool straight to streaming side-project.

I love the general idea of an animated Bond film, especially with the things you could do outside the needs and limits of the blockbuster series.

Downside is, there’s a huge chance it might end up all style and no substance, much like SIN CITY/THE SPIRIT/300 more or less trip over their own aesthetics because there’s not a lot left other than the looks.

But in general the animated Bond adventure might even be good for the big screen, why not? The possibilities for outlandish villains and lairs would be enormous. Marvel’s the limit.
