Reboot? Remake? Retro? Which direction should the series take next?

Fair points. At the same time, Blofeld is Bond’s Lex Luthor or Professor Moriarty. His threat should always be there, in some way or another.

Only mentioned in 3 stories with his only words being told to you third hand?

I will admit, I did hesitate on bringing up Moriarty. Lex is the better example. In more ways than one.

Actually I think Moriarty is more on the money. As Orion said, he’s only in a few stories yet so many of adaptation hinge around the character. This is why I find a lot of modern Sherlock Holmes adaptations so tedious, they only seem to want to tell the one story.

Bond seems to get lumped together with superheroes but they come from very different places. Superheroes mostly come from monthly comics where the heroes mainly fight a recurring set of villains. Bond comes from a series of novels with a different villain each time. Blofeld is anomalous for being the only recurring villain in the original books. All those books have been adapted and he was added into two additional films of the original run. Factor in SPECTRE and No Time To Die and I really don’t see anything else to do.

I’ve said in other threads that I have little interest in the next Superman reboot, partly due to the inevitability of another Superman vs Luthor. But at least there are decades of comics to draw from with alternate ways to interprite and present the character (but even then plenty of unused villains who would be more interesting). With Blofeld we’ve seen it all before.

Which is why a new spin on Blofeld would be welcome and always remains possible.

But at the start of a new tenure I would prefer to leave Blofeld and Spectre in the treasure chest of Bond tropes.

Osama Bin Laden says hi:

Sinister organisation with a shadowy presence across the globe… check!
Sinister hidden underground bases… check!
Global scale plots to destabilise governments and cause mass casualties… check
Fondness for feline companions… erm ok!

But 3 out of 4 ain’t bad. Sadly/worryingly, Blofeld has never been more relevant.

They could always put Blofeld in drag.

Let‘s be honest: the risks DAF was taking were so much bigger than so many people went bananas about during the Craig era.

Imagine DAF today…

Bin Laden was killed over a decade ago so not sure he’s the best representative of modern villainy. Casino Royale was very much the Bond film for the post 9/11 era and did a great job of shifting the focus onto terrorism (with terrorism for hire wisely substituting for Islamic fundamentalism). But things have moved on since then and the next Bond needs to represent the post-COVID world.

OK, you can bring back Blofeld. In drag. Played by RuPaul. That’s my final offer.

And when Bond bests Blofeld, he can say:

As I said before, I think EON maybe further along with things then we thought. Probably talking not just with Bond actors, but directors as well.

Given the number of marketing pushes for releases that were delayed and that cinema going was still picking up in late 2021 I’d call any profit a win.

As much as I love an Aston Martin, I want to see Cinematic Bond back in a Bentley

I wouldn’t be against that, as it would shake up the dynamic again much like they did by going with Lotus and BMW. But I get the feeling they’re with Aston Martin for the long haul now, especially considering the company’s financial position. It could almost feel like an obligation.

The Daily Mail…, yup. “…a source…”, yup.
