Renewed appreciation for Spectre

If he turns up in NTTD, I’d be ok with it, as they did define him as being in the Jaws mould of unstoppable force, at least the type the Craig era would allow.

Sadly, I can’t see how they’d have kept that quiet, but I would be very excited if they had pulled it off and he was back. So much unused potential.

I was thinking about that, but I don’t think it’ll happen.

Hinx’s death being via the rope is probably for the best, realism wise. He doesn’t stack up to Jaws or Oddjob, but I do enjoy his best scene – which is obviously the train fight. I have watched that so many times since the film’s release. Bond really is outhorsepowered physically, which is what I wanted to see with Craig, and ingenuity is required to save himself.

Yes the train fight is great, and of course reminds us of some near misses for Bond on trains before, eg. TSWLM vs Jaws and FRWL vs Grant.

I also like the plane vs truck chase and the little acknowledgements between Hinx and Bond, as an homage to the Moore/Jaws era.

The only problem I have with the Hinx train fight scene is that he never lands a punch to Bond’s head. While he connects on several body shots, Hinx swings and misses on the head shots more than half a dozen times! Bond is able to avoid it every time and it bothers each time I see it. It just doesn’t seem realistic that Hinx couldn’t hit Bond particularly after softening him up with so many gut punches.

Presumably he isn’t meant to kill Bond, since Blofeld has lots of things to show 007 at his desert base - the meterorite, the bank of computer screens and the dentist chair. Plus he wants to tell him his new name.

That one punch Bond throws at Hinx - the one with no energy behind it - always impresses me. Bond has no fight left in him; he can’t win without some intervention, which Madeline wakes up in time to provide. Anya didn’t have that much spunk.

I don’t know about the Anya part, but I do like that totally gassed, flailing punch too. As you said, it clearly shows Bond has nothing left in the tank and can only be saved by Madeleine. That more than anything shows that Hinx is too much for him.

I guess my idea of SPECTRE becoming an exposition for NO TIME TO DIE, thereby being elevated, might come true.

By the time Bond is throwing pots and pans he has basically exhausted all options. The charge Hinx gives him effectively ends the conflict, and the punch to the chest seals the deal. Without Madeleine entering with the gun, Bond was a goner.

I like it more than I used to. There’s some beautiful shots of the plane flying around.

I’m not completely sure about the context of the train fight. Hinx could easily be operating on his own accord, wanting to hunt Bond for personal reasons. The fact he lets actions speak for him (killing the SPECTRE agent at the Rome meeting) suggests he will do whatever he likes and answer to no one.

The part when Bond is downed by Hinx and is on the verge of being murdered before Madeline comes in with the gun, I have to say, Thomas Newman really provides a thrilling score at that moment.
Most of Spectre’s music is recycled from Skyfall and in the main i’m not a fan of it but this part I love! Really evokes a sense of danger/peril.

A few more:

  • Dench’s cameo on the television.
  • The different way Craig delivered the line to Lucia – “Bond. James. Bond.”
  • The scene inside the train cabin with Bond attempting to teach Madeleine how to use a gun.
  • Holding Madeleine’s hand inside the Silver Wraith, comforting her, and in my opinion, soothing his own nerves before he arrives at the lair.
  • Bond simply standing inside Blofeld’s main control room with the monitors everywhere. It brings Connery in YOLT, Moore in MR and Brosnan in GE to mind.

The scene of Bond holding Madeleine’s hand in the Wraith is reminiscent of Bond holding Honey’s hand in Dr No when trying to reassure her before they meet him.

He even says to Honey, “Of course I’m scared, too”.

With no new Bond until (hopefully) November, I will give SPECTRE another chance for a renewed appreciation. Maybe even two or more.

And heck, this way I can spread out my re-watch sessions of all 24 films much wider.

One really has to view at all the upsides in life.

I refer to what I said on What Bond movie do you feel like watching thread. Assume you don’t know the title until Madeline says it.

They will release NTTD only after we all have appreciated SPECTRE.

I took your advice and it did help the film somewhat, helping it to unravel more like a mystery. It still doesn’t make the brothers angle any less ridiculous.
