Tally ho, reference hunters

Nice catch on video game references. I didn’t even think to look for that!

Struck me mostly given that game has loving references to A View To A Kill(CJF’s favourite Bond movie) and CJF is a known gamer.

I’d be curious to see if there’s any potential references to Bloodstone, given it was 22.5 in the way Everything or Nothing was 20.5, complete with full cast and some of the go-to crew.

Have a vague memory it was even announced by MGW…

It very much was. MGW even lamented that they weren’t launching a movie in 2010, but said at least the game would be there.

Leiter’s speech about villains and good guys mixed up is not only from Mathis, but also Dench’s M says it at the end of DAD and CR, and Fiennes’ M says something similar too.

I think my favourite was Robert Brown’s painting in the “Hall of Ms”, proving that he was the predecessor to Dench’s M and part of the same canon.

Which, in itself, is the speech that Bond gave to Mathis while recovering in hospital in the Casino Royale novel.

“When one is young, it’s easy to tell right from wrong. But as one gets older, the heroes and villains get all mixed up,” says Mathis in the QoS film and CR novel.

Thought this would be of interest…

Not necessarily a reference, but when Bond said to M

Christ! You’re thirsty!!

Did any one else think
“Commander…pot…kettle…”

This is good, but why is the guy’s delivery so dull and robotic?!

I see that as a reference for the fans and nothing more. That goes for all of the references to prior Bond content in the Craig timeline. Craig’s run is self contained, and like they did in 2006, they can reboot again. The ending of NTTD puts it to bed once and for all. But that doesn’t mean residual spirit of the franchise’s legacy disappears. I think callbacks will always exist in some fashion, especially when you’re dealing with an accumulation of now 25 films.

Try these for size. As per the Wikipedia listing, “M contacts Bond with news that Malcolm Tedworth, a researcher who disappeared while conducting top-level work for the Ministry of Defence has been located in Istanbul. Suspecting he was kidnapped for his research, Bond is assigned to recover both Tedworth and his work.” Very similar to what happens with Obruchev.

Also, Pomerov is operating a bio-factory that is manufacturing bio-weapons.

When I was watching the film a second time I was hoping to point out the references by memory in the title sequence but gave up halfway.

It’s really made with a frame-by-frame mind, hard to spot them all in an ordinary sitting. Especially when you want to enjoy the film.

This isn’t a reference to Bond, but I heard about this before seeing the movie and now that I’m watching it again as we speak, the bird in the room where Primo is holding Madeleine captive to force tea on her …

"A bird entering your dwelling is said to be a sign of bad fortune. It is thought to herald some impending doom or bad news that you will soon receive. In fact, a bird entering your house could precede the worst news of all, such as the death of a loved one.

Bird-in-the-house-omen

Indeed, it foreshadows bad news to come for Safin and MI6, and even worse for Madeleine.

This quote from Fukunaga about the use of ‘We Have All The Time In The World’:

“So when we were coming up with the ending and we’re trying to figure out, ‘How big do you make this?’ And, Daniel was like, ‘I don’t want to make a big fanfare about it. I’d rather just it’s a fact and then we have Louis’ song play at the end.’ I’m like, ‘Yeah, why not?’ Who cares if it’s been in another Bond film, let’s put it on our credits. It’s the right feeling to have there going out. It’s bittersweet, it’s poignant, but it’s epic at the same time.”

It was a great decision.

I don’t mind its inclusion. It gave me something to feel after Bond’s death left me numb.

And it was the way OHMSS should have ended. This worked beautifully.

I think the glass clink is an appropriately low key farewell to Bond and I present these three quotes as my evidence:

“And Mr. Bond here will have a small memorial service with only Moneypenny and a few tearful restaurateurs in attendance.” - Alec Trevelyan, Goldeneye
“I don’t have any friends.” - James Bond, Quantum of Solace
“So, 007, lots to be done. Are you ready to get back to work?” - M, Skyfall

Bond lives a solitary life and has more acquaintances than friends. He’s a global hero but nobody outside of his circle knows. The secret service operate in the shadows and that’s where he remains. But unlike Safin, Bond didn’t seek to be a God. Only to let people have a chance at living their life.

The ending of The Spy Who Loved Me also seems relevant to the final scene with Madeleine and Mathilde. Vivienne Michel reflects on James Bond as “a man who had turned up at the right time and then gone on his way.” She gets on her Vespa and drives off, thinking “I knew exactly who he was and what he was. And everything, every smallest detail, would be written on my heart for ever.”
