Some tabloid rumours this morning: NTTD is facing re-shoots due to product placements in the the film being out of date by the time the film hits screens.
Makes sense I suppose.

I can see product placement getting out of date but re-shoots would be a last resort. In this day and age it must be easier to do some CG tweaking before breaking out the cameras.

Probably depends which products are concerned. CGI should be possible for a lot - but it would still involve opening post production again. Reshoots are not very likely, that would mean quite a bit more effort.
What I really suppose this is about is _refunds_. NO TIME TO DIE is, if nothing else, one huge advert which comes now not the way it was booked. For the car manufacturers that makes their involvement surely a bit less interesting. While for the timepieces time isn’t that much of a problem…

Heineken and Coke having been so prominent in the last 4 films…or maybe it’s wanting a more up to date 1963 DB5 needed on camera?
Given how much of Bond, especially in the Craig run, only shows a new product if they specifically designed it for the film, I call bull.

Aston Martin wll probably have gone bang again by the time the film comes out, so probably the least of their concerns. But as you say, one huge advert.

Hopefully. I’d much rather see the movie as it was originally intended, still sitting in the can preserved. A two year old movie with new model watches would be strange.

Baselworld 2020 was cancelled, 2021 likewise. I don’t think the big guns in the business will really produce tons of new stuff until most of the economy runs on higher revs. It’s much like fashion, when you‘ve got nowhere to go you neither need the clobber nor the bling. And the tiktoks are bought back by their producers to keep the prices while the collectors always find something to add to their stuff.

Additional expense on top of the mounting interest accruals? I must admit I cannot see this happening.
I would just leave the film as it is; maybe by the time of its release it will be considered a period piece.

I sincerely hope that in the future a Bond film will be done on a much, much smaller budget, with no product placement, only a great and gripping story.

Seriously, though - the expensive brands, aren’t they just as unnecessary for a modern portrayal of Bond as the obligatory use of the Aston Martin or the Wodka Martini shaken not stirred? Wouldn’t it be liberating to strip those things away? Sure, Bond can still drive fancy cars, sleep in luxurious hotels and wear tailor-made clothes. But does it have to be linked to the newest stuff the manufacturers want to plug?

Totally, unfortunately it’ll be Bond 7’s second film at least before that’s doable. If it’s MGM still as the partner, they’ll NEED the extra sources of revenue but if it’s another backer they won’t want their first Bond film to look like it’s made others drop out cause that could seem like a lack of confidence in Bond’s new situation.

I’m a fan of Bond as a spectacle, but when you strip everything back it puts a lot more focus on the things that remain. A solid lead actor and story become even more vital. Sean Connery and Ian Fleming are Bond titans in this regard. They laid the groundwork and made it look so easy.

I believe product placement is Fleming, to an extent, would I like to see a smaller scale Bond movie. Yes. But without the trappings of an expensive lifestyle to highlight the emptiness it may come off as a little worthy. Those trappings are expensive, so getting them free is sensible, thereby making placement a necessity.
However I think also, there is a way to explore this, by the introduction of an older actor in the role , retired called into the fray again. On TV this could be examined in a meaningful way, Brosnan obviously the only one left who could feasibly do it.

That is the _crux_. The use of high class products is in the DNA of Bond (as per Flemmming), they are a core element. Without the expensive suitts and cars, the champagne, the Beluga (north of the Caspian), the gambling and all that, you can take any other James Spoon of the Secret Service and make some crash boom bang actioner in which the main character is just a blunt instrument. Do it and people will say “Oh, now they’re going the Bourne route all the way”.

All true, although - and it’s entirely understandable why, no company would want their product mocked - the Bond films have tended to fetishise the labels whereas Fleming could - if not always, granted - sneer, oddbod snob that he was. There’s an underlying, and occasionally overt, disdain there that the films, to get the budget up, wouldn’t dare risk, commercially. I appreciate that last bit is a totally flamin’ obvious point but I am currently placing subtly into the discussion a new product which is Be Totally Flamin’ Obvious Protein Oats, which are super and yummy and can I have my £5 now?

Exactly. In the novels, brand names were an artistic device put to several and various uses. In the movies, they are a commercial gambit, designed to move product, and an integral part of the film’s financing–facts audience members are aware of, which strips them of most (if not all) artistic uses.
