Billie’s NTTD gives Zimmer plenty of scope for moody ambience. I’d love to hear an instrumental form of the song played at some point, in the style of TDK Rises’ recurring ‘On Thin Ice’ motif. I wouldn’t be surprised if this replaces Thomas Newman’s Madeleine theme.
I’m especially dying to hear what he cooks up for Matera and the other action scenes. He’s well aware of his ‘epic’ reputation and always seeks to satisfy his fans in that regard.
I generally enjoy Hans Zimmer’s scores but they’re usually pretty recognisable as Zimmer. And I like my Bond to sound like Bond. I’m not convinced that his style is compatible with Bond. I have a fear the styles will clash rather than mesh, but I suppose we’ll see - or hear - in time. But I shall be optimistic and hope that my fears are unfounded.
One of the recent TV spots featured very recognisable Zimmer music, and I think that’s great, as I wouldn’t want his style to be watered down. I think with NTTD being Craig’s last, and the plot seemingly being large scale, he’s an appropriate fit. He likes simplicity in his music and the way that translates to human emotion – ‘Time’ being a good example. Music like that in the context of a finale is ideal. I’m fairly confident Marr’s guitar and Billie’s melody will automatically elevate the mood when required.
Amazon has taken down its No Time to Die CD listing. “Currently unavailable” it says on my pre-order page (I had placed the order March 4th–wishful thinking.) Now it doesn’t even pop up in their search.
Well, in a normal world today Hans Zimmer´s score would have been released. And next week we would have been able to see the film itself.
But hey, it does feel good to notice what is essential in life. And if this situation can at least have one upside then it is forcing everybody on this world to reconsider our approach to life.
I bought the extended Dr. No soundtrack instead. If NTTD does have a Dr. No reference, seems appropriate. But if not, still appreciate the Jamaican vacation vibes in these times …
This is true, which is why I didn’t buy it when it first came out. But having but all the official releases and a few other bootlegs, it gave me a fix I needed. But there is a drop in quality over the latter third of the CD.
I’ve been focusing on the soundtracks I usually skip over (or devote less time to). Some of these include TMWTGG, FYEO and AVTAK.
TMWTGG is Barry’s weakest, but there are reasons for that. Goodnight Goodnight is my favourite cue from the album, and I put that melody alongside any other Bond motif from the series - very luxurious and classy. A Drive in the Country, Runway, Submarine and For Your Eyes Only (Instrumental) are my selections from Conti, and I pretty much like everything from AVTAK.
I’m also working on compiling a Bond playlist to soothe my cabin fever. I’m thinking about five tracks from each album and a focus on ambient tracks like Cafe Martinique, Someone Usually Dies, Try, etc.
Since it is not about earning any money or keeping the rightsholders from their share, I can recommend searching youtube for the reorchestrated cues from the Bond scores which were never released. They are not the real thing, but they are mostly pretty good approximations. And in the case of TMWTGG they really add to the listening experience. They made me reappreciate that score a lot.
Funny you mention that, because an order of FYEO, AVTAK and MR from elite soundtracks arrived the other day that I had forgotten I made. Extended soundtracks, and in the case of MR some re-recordings accompanying the original score (whose tapes I gather are lost.) I’ve bought at least two versions of the official releases (90s releases as well as 40 anniversary remasters.)
Part of this is that if EON can’t be bothered to properly re release remastered/remixed soundtracks, they can’t expect us to wait for them when other products, mostly of good quality, are available. I have at least two versions of most every Bond soundtrack by now.
And there are some fabulous tracks that never made it onto an official release.
A couple of years ago I bought some extended scores from Elite Soundtracks too, but most of it are awfull and the same cheap stuff taken from dvd’s you sometimes see on Ebay, sold as official, incl. all kind of noices, which you could copy yourself as good as they did. I bought Moonraker, TSWLM, Golden Gun and LTK, only the last one was in great quality. If I remember well, it were all cd-r’s, but I could be wrong about that.
Exactly - they are all bootlegs, often badly stitched together from DVD audio including sound effects.
While I understand wishing to have more music than EON allows (and they are, according to the specialty labels, holding out on those complete releases, having only in the last few years agreed to the release of Arnold´s work for DAD and TWINE), one has to be aware that buying bootlegs is filling the purses of illegality.
