Many who complained at how Iron Man 3 portrayed The Mandarin, _hated_ that it wasn’t the racist stereotype the books are, and took offence that it was an essay that Americans would take caricature over truth.

Yes, Shane Black was scathing in his commentary.

> I adore Marvel movies, but from my experience the _second_ a film _actually_ tanks, the studio, in this instance Disney, will dump it and any related.

There have already been Marvel movies that weren’t as well received, like the second Iron Man and Thor entries. I don’t know what their box office looked like, which may be your only point, but most folks seem not to have found them satisfying. And yet here we are, still going strong.

The Terminators, Rambos, Rocky’s, Star Treks, etc have all had a “crash and burn” entry or three, but they keep soldiering on. One failure didn’t end the party. Heck, add Bond to that list.

I think the genius of the Marvel approach is that all the eggs aren’t in one basket. Even if people were to get tired of, say, Thor, they’ve still got a dozen other characters on the bench. Marvel’s done a good job of differentiating their films so they’ve covered space opera (Guardians and Thor), spy films (Captain America), teen movies (Spider-Man), magic (Dr Strange) and soon, martial arts (Shang-Chi). So it’s no longer as simple as “people are tired of superheroes” because superheroes come in multiple flavors.

> [@secretagentfan](#):
>
> But with the “original” Avengers finished now I predict a decline in box office will happen sooner rather than later.

I certainly feel like the momentum’s been lost, to a large degree. There was a feeling of building towards something with the first Avengers film, and its frankly incredible that they repeated it with not one but THREE sequels, leading to an entry that wrapped up 22 films and 10 years of build-up. BUT… it really was an ending. How satisfying an ending is debatable, but an ending, and in the case of the two (arguably 3) biggest characters in the line-up, a pretty final ending. It remains to be seen if audiences will still feel as compelled to keep coming back now that they’ve been given such a perfect jumping off point.

In terms of “box office,” a decline is almost guaranteed. I don’t see how the inaugural entries for properties like Shang-Chi, or follow-ups for things like Dr Strange could match the record-breaking numbers of the “everything including the kitchen sink” Endgame. That was the first movie we’ve ever seen that was supported by, essentially, a decade-long marketing campaign.

It’ll be interesting to see the tone they take going forward. Arguably, the Marvel universe up til now has been defined by the RDJ model, full of wise-cracking heroes whether it was true to the original character (Spidey) or not (Dr Strange, Thor). Without Downey around, who will be the spiritual center of the new MCEU and what approach will they adopt? If the new most popular character is more serious and angsty, will all the second-stringers follow his or her lead?

> The thing is, part of the huge success of Marvel are the old codgers such as me: people in their 50s who watched most of the Marvel stuff for old times sake.

I’d certainly put myself in that camp: the Marvel movies have been for me what the comics stopped being a long time ago: fun. They managed to capture the joyful spirit of the 60’s “Marvel Age” even if the details were often much changed.

> [@Dustin](#):
>
> So I think the crucial step will be the moment when the middle aged audiences start staying at home and the tent pole blockbuster character of these productions wanes.

I recently saw a survey where a large majority of respondents said they’d be happy to see new Marvel films at home first, instead of in theaters. Not saying they’d want to wait until they end up on a streaming service, but preferring they DEBUT on a streaming service. Even if they have to pay a premium for it. The chief reasons being the high cost of theater concessions and the misery of putting up with other theater-goers. I’d argue this applies to fare beyond Marvel, and it’s not a good sign for the future of theatrical releases in general.

This is the crucial point: one of the reasons why productions often need such a huge box office just to break even is the share theatres get from ticket sales. Make no mistake, they need that share to run their multiplexes, 365 days per year with x showings in y cinemas. But for the industry as a whole the theatre share is one expense they’ll gradually come to see as superfluous.

I expect within the next few years a tentative trial of ‘premium event’ streaming, big productions that are simultaneously shown to a select clientele at home. Once that model takes off it’s probably just a question of when the industry will try to cut out the middle man for good. Maybe theatres will then again show the small productions, the ones you seldom read about in the entertainment pages - or anywhere else - because they have just a fraction of the marketing budget.

Thanks for the education - i haven’t read the comics and have no idea how racist it may indeed have been to have an asian Mandarin.

What i can attest to was how fantastic i found the reveal of Trevor Slattery. It’s by far my favourite moment, storyline and character in all the Marvel films.

I hated the “Mandarin” reveal in Iron Man 3 because it takes Iron Man’s arch-enemy and turns him into a bumbling, idiotic puppet of another way-lesser-known villain. That would be like taking Batman’s Joker and making him a similarly ignoramus puppet of somebody like Tony Zucco–and that is just outright wrong and blasphemous to the history of those characters. It totally ruined the movie for me. 😠

I was looking forward to seeing Ben Kingsley as the Mandarin. It should have been great. Everything leading up to the film looked great–the posters, the trailers. And then the movie came out. It was a kick to the groin for Iron Man fans. And you know Marvel know they made a mistake because now they’re going to bring the character back for real in the upcoming Shang-Chi movie. What he has to do with Shang-Chi I don’t know, but they missed a golden opportunity by pitting him against Iron Man in the guise of Ben Kinglsey.

Didn’t know where else to put this.

Cavill reports that his Bond audition required him to walk out of a bathroom wearing just a towel.

Am I alone in being shocked by this? Why in hell should he have had to do that?

This is a #Metoo moment for men right there.

Hilarious! Well, Cavil certainly went to extremes in his response to the critics. Good for him!

As for #metoo… It doesn’t so much make me cross with Eon for putting this poor, well paid actor through such hell; basically being asked to do something he’ll probably have to do at some point in the movie. It just puts into relief the band wagon of questionable, ‘soft’ metoo claims. Cavil, like any actor could’ve simply said no thanks, this isn’t for me.

If we do get a female Bond, then Eon will have to seriously change their traditional audition, or actresses may come out of the woodwork for years to come with lawsuits claiming they were body shamed.

Every one listed there dumped the director at the very least (Thor 2) or _absolutely everybody_ involved (Terminator, Star Trek) in relation to the level of financial failure, from not as much money as they’d like on the opening weekend in the US (what over excited journalists call tanking) to _actually_ tanking.

Critical and “fan” opinion does not even slightly factor in. The fact Michael Bay’s Transformers became a franchise is proof of that.

In the comics, Shang-Chi 's nemesis was his father, Fu Manchu. That character is owned by the Sax Rohmer estate and thus off limits, so Marvel is tapping The Mandarin, one of their many “yellow peril” Manchu rip-offs (Yellow Claw would have been a better fit, but they’d be asking for trouble with that name in 2019).

Changing directors between franchises is normal business. The ST:TNG crew was past their sell-by date. And all the franchises kept going anyway, which was my point. If you’re looking for the Marvel films to morph over time in response to box office dips, yes that’s likely. But if you’re predicting “game over” anytime soon, you’re liable to be disappointed.

yeah i mean lets not pretend they’re getting the mandarin out because of some mea culpa or goodwill gesture to fans - theyre getting him out because they need a BIG villain for their big chinese movie and it will play well in the West (and in China) to tie their new hero to the most important hero, Iron Man (see Holland Spiderman for the rundown of how its going to go)

Maybe. As far as I know that scene is the traditional benchmark most contenders have to deliver. In my view it’s a good indicator whether the actor can deliver the chemistry with a female colleague and the mix of confidence, sex appeal and physical presence the role calls for. After all, this _is_ what the role is about.

Oh, I agree it’s a good scene to do, and I know almost everyone has done it. But perhaps it’s time to choose another or write another one. As has already been said, if one day we get a female Bond and an actress has to perform that scene for a screen test, there will be a right sh\*t storm. People will say she’s been sexualised before she’s even been cast.

I don’t really think it will come to that. Is there demand for a female superspy when the market is crowded with Atomic Blonde, Aeon Flux, Red Sparrow, Nikita, Salt, Black Widow, Ilsa Faust and and and? They are already here, some even for decades. Modesty Blaise, Emma Peel and Cathy Gale are in the business almost as long as Bond. What would be the point?

But if it came to Bond depicted by a woman I think the casting process would have to start from scratch anyway.

I obviously need to work on my sarcasm delivery. I wasn’t suggesting that changing the audition was the best course of action, just that if people think Cavil’s experience was bad, wait til a woman has to ‘suffer such horrors’ as auditioning for Eon wrapped in towel…

For me an interpretation of Cavil’s experience as de-humanising in any way is, well, way off. He’s an actor auditioning for a very specific role. If the producers deem such an audition a valid part of the process, then that’s exactly what it is. If some producers exploit such traditions for their own sexual gratification, then the auditionee surely has a responsibility not to cooperate and walk.

Wanting Eon to change their process for the sake of perceived correctness is frankly metoo gone mad. In fact such uber conservative thinking only makes it harder for the true victims (those who were actually raped, rather than bought off with starring roles) to get their justice by making the whole issue a media baiting, money spinning farce.

To be fair to Cavill, I don’t think that anecdote was meant as anything but an early experience by a young actor at the start of his career. Roger Moore lost some weight after The Persuaders and before he came aboard the 007 ship. Craig beefed up considerably.

It’s a perfectly normal routine that physically demanding roles require actors to prepare for it - and one of the reasons actors are happy when they finish the gig and can live ‘normal’ lives again. Campbell pointed Cavill (and Campbell supposedly championed him over Craig), and Cavill landed many roles afterwards he wouldn’t have if nobody had told him.

</div>

Absolutely! I wasn’t suggesting Cavill was expressing ill feeling, but that others that feed his anecdote into the metoo narrative are way off the mark.

It may seem to perhaps readdress an inequity from the male point of view - that it happens to men too (I’ve certainly heard stories of men being sexually preyed upon by a powerful woman or two in the tv industry; certainly a metoo issue). But wearing a towel for a Bond audition certainly isn’t in any way metoo. Suggesting it is now politically incorrect simply empowers those that use metoo to further their own agenda.

It would be a nonsense for an actress who wants to be the female bond to turn her nose up at an audition designed to judge her sexual confidence, partly by impressing upon the audience that they’re in great shape, since it’s after all a character that uses seduction and physical prowess regularly for the greater good… or is that about to become outlawed too?
