007 First Light - IO Interactive

That’s because, for whatever reason, the gaming press has decided to shine a massive spotlight on this game that they didn’t give any of the other Bond games.

Quite a lot of new footage. Love the use of Universal Exports and the way we’ll be able to explore MI6. That’s dream Bond simulator stuff right there. It generally feels like a balanced experience with the physicality and how the gadgets are used. Can’t wait for next month.

curious if @Dustin would be trying out this game ?

I probably would if I were still into gaming and maybe 25 years younger. But I never was a big gamer anyway, In my life I’ve played a sum total of two games start to finish, Command & Conquer and Shadows of the Empire. No comparison to state-of-the-art games with multiplayer mode and almost film like graphics. This looks like you can also create your own character, play missions with others and immerse in an evolving 00 world with new missions and weaponry - just what keeps kids invested in the bigger franchises.

I’m calling it already - the EA Games era will always be nostalgic for me but First Light will end up being the best. Hand to hand combat, driving, ‘Bond moments’ - it’s an enhanced Everything or Nothing. I never get sick of the Klaus Hergersheimer routine whenever you’re behind enemy lines either. It’s taken this long to be an active feature.

Yep, I agree. And while I do enjoy the Activision Bond games, they felt way too Call of Duty-fied (except for Blood Stone). Activision did not care about the Bond license the way that EA did. However, First Light appears to be on a level that we’ve never seen before for 007.

Bloodstone was so rushed that it’s a miracle it came out as well as it did. I remember being stunned that there wasn’t even an ability to crouch built in to the game mechanics (he only took a knee if the cover you gripped to was low). This game here is on a level we’ve never seen before. My main question now isn’t whether or not this will be any good (you never know but it certainly looks like they’ve nailed it) but how long the campaign will be. To be sure, it’s hard to be picky with something that has clearly been given more love and care than any Bond game since EoN. This really looks to be a proper successor to that experience and it’s hard not to get caught up in the excitement of it all.

Blood Stone, while good, feels like 2 separate games. The first half’s story is very disconnected from the second half. It is amazing it’s as good as it is, given how disjointed it is. I’m still annoyed that Raven Software’s follow-up was cancelled.

One other thing I’ll say about Bloodstone that rarely gets mentioned is its fun use of an Ekranoplan after the let down of Devil May Care’s attempt with the same vehicle. That sequence, which caps the games first half, is an absolute blast.

That is a great sequence. Again though, if fees like it should be the finale, not just the midpoint.

I prefer the approach of Blood Stone, but with time I ended up preferring GE Reloaded. It’s a solid game. I also enjoy comparing the similarities and differences in the story. They ended up doing something more interesting than a direct remake IMO.

I’m thinking perhaps Hitman Absolution length of 12-13 hours, with more time to get everything and approach the missions from different perspectives. IO aren’t strangers to DLC either, so First Light should have a lot of life in it.

I think both got massively overly fixated on Goldeneye 97 nostalgia despite the the fact the interactive Bond movie model always made a better game.

That lyric of “Is it real or is fake?” Just wont leave me…

Hitman Absolution feels more like a Bond adventure than a true Hitman game, so that isn’t surprising. It really feels like EON and IO Interactive are a perfect match for Bond.

IO clearly wanted the Bond licence. None of their games have been subtle.

The first was BEFORE they had access to Bond

The official site now has a countdown on the main page. I’m hoping to see the locations and gadgets sections updated in the coming days, too. I like that they’ve gone for portable everyday items like watches, pens and lighters. That’s usually the best way to go. The 007 Store also has t-shirts available. I’m not biting there, but if they release a soundtrack and art book I will be.

IO provided a hands on preview of the game and the feedback is very positive:

There’s more of those reactions and I’m not surprised in the slightest. IO was always an obvious slam dunk choice. I do think this will be the Arkham/Insomniac Spider-Man equivalent for James Bond, and be a defining version of the character for a new generation.
