007 First Light - IO Interactive

I hadn’t played any of the Hitman games before but Hitman: World of Assassination was on sale for $20 and I couldn’t resist. I’m glad I couldn’t. It’s amazing and my anticipation for First Light is building daily. I played the Hitman Le Chiffre mission and unlocked the black tuxedo skin for First Light. May 27th can’t come soon enough.

The campaign length is about 20 hours, which is more than I imagined. This doesn’t include tactical simulator missions either. Everything or Nothing was about 8 hours and similar for Nightfire. So this is huge.

And yet another Guardian story on First Light. Seems like at least the media is happy to get their fangs into this game…

It’s really tiring to see the narrative that the only good Bond game is GE. I have nostalgia for it, but at the core it’s an all guns blazing first person shooter. Dismissing the likes of Everything or Nothing by saying the games have “fallen short” of capturing the feel of the movies is disrespectful and lazy. What’s really pleasing to see is the number of posts by youth saying they’re checking out the films for the first time, and they’re excited about playing First Light. I’m hoping that’s really the case, because if so, it’s mission accomplished.

That would be great!

I’m always shocked that Nightfire gets overlooked when discussing the best Bond games. An awesome single player campaign coupled with a really fun and varied multiplayer experience. Nightfire to me represents the refinement of the Goldeneye model, but it never gets its due. Everything or Nothing is the proper evolution following that refinement, and it’s shockingly good. I would have loved to see its sequel, I believe tentatively titled Phoenix Rising, over the FRWL experience, which was neat in its own way but not terribly exciting as a game.

Nightfire is so good. Still holds up today and I agree it’s a refinement of GE. The best first person shooter we’ve had with Bond with great vehicular action. Even dismissing Agent Under Fire feels wrong to me. It provided an original story and the feel of the movies, especially considering the era of the technology. A fun game and I’m sure still has a lot of fond memories in the fandom.

The EA trilogy of Agent Under Fire, Nightfire, and Everything or Nothing is the peak of Bond games. 3 fantastic games with stories that could stand up against the films. And even though AUF feels a bit underbaked (the game is cobbled together with reused assets from the cancelled PS2 version of TWINE and a rushed new story), it amazing the game is as satisfying to play as it is.

I’d also recommend Hitman Absolution. It’s a bit more linear and story-focused, but still with the semi-open Hitmanstyle levels. IMO, its the most Bond-Ian Hitman game.
