Deathmatch 2022

It is an odd trait in fandoms, hate hard on the last guy with Batman and Bond. Hate REALLY hard and pretend the last era a masterpiece in Star Trek and Star Wars - come Bond 7, Craig will be hated and when Star Trek gets rebooted the Kelvin timeline will be heralded.

Some number-crunching, amidst all the bone-crunching, for Round 2.

Form table after Round 2 – form based on average % chance of success in a match.

As far as the instant set of Deathmatches go, the Quarter-Finals are now on and there will be some big names falling at that stage, given the draw.

As far as the Villain comparison goes, there’s still time for these rankings to adjust but in principle, the higher the positive number for the Villain, the more they may be the highpoint of their films - Zorin, Drax, Scaramanga, say - and the more the Film is ahead, perhaps the villainy is a bit weak, or overshadowed by other qualities? No Time to Die, I am looking at you.

At least Graves can go to his… grave knowing he is marginally more popular than the rubbish that surrounds him.

For Round 2 of the Films match, big fall for Tomorrow Never Dies, although still markedly the most popular of the Brosnans (which is saying very little) and The Living Daylights drops alarmingly although, and some solace, it’s still more popular than its villains. This is a very teeny compliment. Most ickle. Talking of solace, albeit it is a scramble for dust, Dominic Greene may be all dried up but there’s hope for the film yet. A very small hope.

From Russia with Love, last year’s undefeated winner, is out at the Quarter-Final stage. Also out, Casino Royale 2006, which finished Runner-Up in last year’s Deathmatch.

Big drops for From Russia with Love, Casino Royale and No Time To Die in their form, and last year’s form winner (also From Russia with Love) will be nervous (I accept it is a non-sentient entity, but so what?) as The Spy who Loved Me and Skyfall creep slowly up the form table. No Time To Die is a bit of a shocker, interpret that as you will, and its net effect is to push Tomorrow Never Dies up the form table, which distances that yet further from GoldenEye. “No Time To Die - Even Makes A Brosnan Look Better” - one suspects they wouldn’t use that slogan. Moonraker drifts dreamily into the Top 10, leaving For Your Eyes Only in its moonlight trail. Justice done, if I’m permitted a moment of bias.

Things to look out for from Semi-Finals - possibility of From Russia with Love being toppled from its form pedestal, and depending on outcomes, any of places 2-5 could do that. However, constant infighting may mean From Russia with Love doesn’t budge, especially if the Semi-Finals are close. Goldfinger very much an outside bet to achieve a rise in placing, but might be looking over its shoulder warily at You Only Live Twice (as one tends to) if it suffers a heavy defeat. Things from 8 down seem settled unless Goldfinger is completely (sour) mashed.

The major beneficaires of the Semi-Finals appear to be the non-participants From Russia with Love and Casino Royale. Be your game chess or poker, seems that the playing of the odds works.

Or being drawn against the likes of Spectre and A View to a Kill in Round 1. These two were in the same group and seem tied together.

Conceptually, the further one progresses it is likely the tighter the games become and one’s average share of the vote will suffer, so a tactic may be to win big early and then flame out. Perhaps.

Still, they were knocked out, form is temporary and class is permanent (etc.) and it’s a Goldfinger v The Spy who Loved Me final. A big win for either could tamper with the form table a bit but it’ll take some doing to knock From Russia with Love from the top.

The Deathmatch winners in 2020 and 2021 were OHMSS and From Russia with Love, respectively, albeit the 2020 series (brought to you by Virus Omega - makes you just lurve masticating a banana) - ran in a slightly diferent way. So we will have a new champion this year. Form suggests The Spy who Loved Me but the surprise package for both Villain and Film Deathmatches has been Goldfinger, which has arguably underperformed in previous years.

That said, looking at the form tables over the past three years, perhaps it hasn’t. (Blanks are issues still to be determined).

Live and Let Die consistently not that popular? Some big falls across the years for others…

As with its villain, Licence to Kill seems to be the most consistent player. Diamonds are Forever pretty consistent too. Also Die Another Day and Spectre, for reasons not worth going into.

We haven’t had a Deathmatch winner younger than 53 years old so far; might break that this year with a youngling of a mere 45. The Brosnans saved the series! The Craigs were a new direction! Neither seems to have much punch, though. Even if it finishes high in the form table, Casino Royale might be this year’s underachiever based on Deathmatch performance.

We have a winner.

The Spy who Loved Me wins the 2022 Deathmatch knockout, making it the youngest winner of the Deathmatch: Films so far. At 45. Gives us all hope.

Form table as below, with From Russia with Love top for the second year in a row. Hard to bet against it. The round of third-place death-off and the Final produced one last surprise; due to the outcomes of both, You Only Live Twice emerges as fifth in the running.

Some further number crunching follows tomorrow, with Deathmatch: Songs starting on Saturday.

Glad to see a win for TSWLM, especially since I just got a link on my smartphone to an article ranking all the Bond films (how original) wherein it was placed all the way down at 23 or something (!). But that was going on “critic’s reviews” (which probably means Rotten Tomatoes) and I think we all agreed a long time ago none of them know their asses from holes in the ground. So all is well.

Songs Deathmatches - Group stage - now open to 20 June.

Some further overview of stats to come - table below is the merged averages of how things finished for both Films and Villains over the past three years. This enables seeding for 2023 in both. Yes, I know No Time To Die is now 8th seed as a Film for next year, but it could have performed worse - its Villain did.

Seed for 2023 Film Villain (by film) Gap from Film to Villain

The World is Not Enough No Time To Die +5 Villain
Spectre Die Another Day +3 Villain
A View to a Kill The Living Daylights +15 Villain
Die Another Day Quantum of Solace +2 Villain

The Spy who Loved Me, this year’s Film Deathmatch winner, is the most consistent finisher as far as form goes over the past 3 years, so that’s another missile in its silo.

Six films are in the top ten for both - this may reduce further once the Songs results come through.

GoldenEye scrapes through as a top ten seed due to a strong finish in 2020, albeit not so popular since. For Your Eyes Only mysteriously over-promoted. Scaramanga and Zorin evidently carry their respective films.

Most consistent between Film and Villain - Diamonds are Forever (it has to win something). Consistently mediocre, but it does have a consistency. Much like that mud bath thing at the start. Or Blofeld’s foundation.

No Time To Die - biggest gap between Film and Villain popularity. Whilst its placing as a Film will alter over the years, perhaps the gap won’t, very much. It’s known in the trade* as “doing a Stromberg”.

*There’s no trade but there’s a bit of science to this, although it’s the sort of robust science represented by DNA replacement surgery, un-EMPable permanent nanobots and glugging bleach to see off Covid.

More to come.

Round 2 for the Songs is now open; the group stage Round 1 has concluded, as follows:

A Played W D L F A Goal difference Average % share of vote Points
You Know My Name 4 4 0 0 69 15 +54 82 12
A View to a Kill 4 3 0 1 62 21 +41 75 9
From Russia with Love 4 2 0 2 46 39 +7 53.75 6
Underneath the Mango Tree 4 1 0 3 15 69 -54 18 3
The Writing’s on the Wall 4 0 0 4 18 66 -48 21.5 0

Perhaps one of the more true-to-accepted-norms outcomes for the top two. As far as the group stage goes, albeit even with worse form, Underneath the Mango Tree did hand out a beating to The Writing’s on the Wall, for whom the writing’s on the wall.

Underneath the Mango Tree did suffer a total walkover at the hands of You Know My Name and two more different songs in the repertoire it would be tricky to find. Still, more popular than anything associated with Spectre, which seems to be a running theme of this month’s matches across all given areas.

From Russia with Love likely to be a lucky loser on that form.

B Played W D L F A Goal difference Average % share of vote Points
Live and Let Die 4 4 0 0 75 7 +68 91.75 12
Goldfinger 4 3 0 1 50 33 +17 61 9
No Time To Die 4 2 0 2 32 46 -14 41.5 6
GoldenEye 4 1 0 3 27 51 -24 35.25 3
Licence to Kill 4 0 0 4 16 63 -47 20.5 0

Yikes. With 95% of the vote in three of its group matches, and not up against any traditional whipping-boys of the genre, can anything stop Live and Let Die?

No Time To Die might struggle to be a Lucky Loser on that form.

Surprisingly weak showing for Licence to Kill? Thought that was more popular but may have been a tough draw on this occasion.

C Played W D L F A Goal difference Average % share of vote Points
Nobody Does It Better 4 4 0 0 54 28 +26 67.5 12
Skyfall 4 3 0 1 63 25 +38 68.25 9
Thunderball 4 2 0 2 42 38 +4 52.5 6
The World is Not Enough 4 1 0 3 40 38 +2 51.75 3
Another Way to Die 4 0 0 4 8 70 -62 10 0

Perhaps the most straightforward of the groups, and that’s a chewy goal difference between the top two and the rest. However, due to the presence of Another Way to Die, 3rd and 4th places may be Lucky Losers as their form undoubtedly has been helped by grinding Another Way to Die into the dirt.

Nobody Does It Better wins, but that goal difference is the lowest of any of the group winners, and even Another Way to Die scored nearly half of its points against it. Hmm.

Another walkover here - Skyfall trouncing immediate predecessor Another Way to Die.

D Played W D L F A Goal difference Average % share of vote Points
Diamonds are Forever 4 4 0 0 69 14 +55 83 12
You Only Live Twice 4 3 0 1 65 19 +46 77.5 9

The Man with the Golden Gun 4 1 0 3 28 55 -27 34 3
Die Another Day 4 0 0 4 15 67 -52 18.25 0

Again, possibly true to form and the bottom two not that massive a surprise, albeit Die Another Day did seem to score points. Sigmund Freud, analyse that.

Not much between the top two in their game (11-10 to Diamonds are Forever, which is tighter than Blofeld’s bra), but others are very distant, really. Given how horrid they both are, margin of victory for The Man with the Golden Gun over Die Another Die was fairly broad.

E Played W D L F A Goal difference Average % share of vote Points
We Have All the Time in the World 4 4 0 0 62 22 +40 73.5 12
Moonraker 4 3 0 1 47 37 +10 56 9

For Your Eyes Only 4 1 0 3 35 49 -14 41.75 3
All Time High 4 0 0 4 23 61 -38 27.5 0

Possibly the tightest of the groups overall, with All Time High not really getting a massive beating albeit very definitely finishing last. Pretty tight between Moonraker and The Living Daylights for second place, and The Living Daylights will patently be a Lucky Loser moving into Round 2.

Probably too early to make predictions with confidence yet but even if it doesn’t go on to win the knockout Deathmatch, Live and Let Die seems bolted to the top of the form tree (it has berries) for a little while yet.

No Time To Die squeaks into Round 2 but it’s another pretty underwhelming showing for something so shiny and new.

With 40% of the Top Ten represented by the one decade, and its worst performer not the lowest of the low, are we headed towards another 1970s winner for this year’s tournament?

Round 2 matches as follows:

You Know My Name v Thunderball (would have been From Russia with Love but that had already happened in Round 1)
Live and Let Die v Moonraker
Nobody Does It Better v You Only Live Twice
Diamonds are Forever v From Russia with Love
We Have All the Time in the World v The World is Not Enough (the “Confusion about the World” derby)
Goldfinger v The Living Daylights
A View to a Kill v For Your Eyes Only
Skyfall v No Time To Die

Personally, and not to sway voting, suspect the “home” song may have the edge in all of these, but that’s just a guess.

Live and Let Die improved its form, alarmingly so for the next best. Whatever now happens, it might be tough to shake it from the top, not least because those top two are playing each other in the Quarter-Finals.

Big drop for You Only Live Twice, but still a potential seed for next year depending on further outcomes.

No Time To Die is no longer my, nor your, concern. Let it burn.

Although same form, Moonraker outranks The Living Daylights having beaten it in the Round 1 group stage and finishing as a qualifier from that rather than a Lucky Loser.

Given that From Russia with Love cannot proceed and unless Goldfinger has a calamity in the Quarter-Finals, the Top Ten is probably settled but it’s now about jockeying for position / flogging a dead horse given that there already seems to be a clear winner.

Quarter-Finals spewed out two close matches, one straightforward win and also a draw between We Have All the Time in the World and A View to a Kill.

Deciding on the draw:

Success v common enemy (For Your Eyes Only): We Have… (etc) played FYEO in the group stage and won 15-6. AVTAK played it in Round 2 and won 15-6. No outcome there.

Form as it currently stands after Q-F: A View to a Kill on 70.17, We Have… (etc) on 70. Very tight, that, but A View to a Kill nudges ahead.

Gain/rise in form over Deathmatch: From its opening form from the group stage, AVTAK has dropped 4.67 points to this stage. We Have… (etc) has dropped 3.5. We Have… (etc) draws level.

Overall goal difference : Not including the draw, AVTAK had scored 77 votes with 27 against. We Have… (etc) scored 78 votes with 27 against. Draw would obviousy keep the margins the same so We Have… (etc) squeezes through into the Semi-Finals by one solitary vote.

Let’s hope these Dominion machines are reliable.

(One other potential catgory - performance in group stage - We Have All the Time in the World won all its group matches and AVTAK lost one, so on matches won, We Have (etc) would also go through. But the “one vote only” lends itself to drama).

Semi-Finals now open to 23 June:

Goldfinger v Nobody Does It Better
We Have all the Time in the World v Live and Let Die (seemingly clashing sentiments).

Although suffering a very minor drop in form, in seeing off the previous second placer Diamonds are Forever, Live and Let Die widens its lead significantly. You Know My Name and A View to a Kill benefit from the pretty heavy defeat of Diamonds are Forever, but are no longer in the knock-out. We Have All the Time in the World could get above them with a good Semi-Final win but it’s up against Live and Let Die, so… hmm.

Nobody Does It Better and Goldfinger are the other two songs still in the match and good performance either way could still affect ranking points in the mid Top Ten. Chewy ranking. One might even say masticatory ranking. But not in front of one’s Granny.

Compared to last year (only one previous year of this Deathmatch) - some remarkable consistency at the QF stage…

Albeit again with a very slight erosion of its vote share, Live and Let Die handed out a bit of a hammering to We Have All the Time in the World, such as to make it sink down the form table quite significantly, and pushing Diamonds are Forever back into the top 4. You might have all the time in the World (you don’t, it’s ironic) but you certainly don’t have all the votes.

However, We Have… (etc) is still in the game, now vying for third place in the knockout so things can still move about there. Depends how well it does against Goldfinger, which seems to find itself locked into 9th place here.

Nobody Does It Better takes on Live and Let Die in the Final, and again its vote share there could jigger things about a bit. Live and Let Die having won the form league some time ago (barring a total catastrophe in the Final), will it be caught out by pity voting?

Still - the 1970s, eh? Deathmatches this year are pointing to it as Bond’s GoldenAge. That’s not uninteresting.

Stop press (hold on to your bladders): as there’s still a bit of June left (and it is a favourite month o’mine), there will be a new catgory for Deathmatches 2022 - launches 24th June. Contain yourselves.

We have a winner, and it seemed pretty clear throughout.

Live and Let Die retains its Deathmatch crown and tops the form table too, as indeed it also did last year. Can it ever be beaten? Can we tolerate the inevitable upcoming Glastonbury sing-along of it?

Deathmatch placings 2022:

1st: Live and Let Die
2nd: Nobody Does It Better
3rd: We Have All the Time in the World

Some interesting outcomes here, not least the ongoing debate about what acting actually is. Perhaps this one ended up more provocative than it was intended to be. Again, diversity and range of performance preferences…

Craig – No Time To Die v Moore - Moonraker

Connery – From Russia with Love v Dalton – Licence to Kill

All six Eon Connery performances get into Round 2. Mm-hm. I accept both Daltons did too, but oddly that doesn’t seem as impressive. We have a Brosnan! Not sure for how long, but he’s there. Bless.

Not much movement in the higher places - it’s tough at the top, and a little bit flabby at the bottom - and possibly too early to call - no real runaway leader yet.

Some big drops for the two later Connerys and, although the top end of the form table seems to suggest a preference for the more “serious” interpretations, Licence to Kill and The Man with the Golden Gun burned, although there might be a difference between “more serious” and “downright 'orrible”.

Wonder whether there’s much real surprise in the top ten currently being 3 Connery, 3 Craig, 2 Moore, and a Dalton and a Brosnan. Whether I would personally have picked the specific ones there for each Bond is another matter. Dalton and Brosnan certainly the same but the others…hmm.

The Quarter-Finals produced a draw between Craig - No Time To Die and Craig - Skyfall.

Craig - Skyfall goes through on the basis of:

Form position prior to Quarter-Final - Craig - Skyfall 5th, Craig - No Time To Die 8th. Other results in the Quarter-Finals may have affected these placings (form table up later) but not between each other.

Form prior to Quarter-Final - Craig - Skyfall 74, Craig - No Time To Die 59.6

Rise or dip in form Round 1 to Round 2 - Craig - Skyfall +6.5, Craig - No Time To Die -0.15

Group stage - both won 3 and lost 1 but Craig - Skyfall had a goal difference of +24, and Craig - No Time To Die +14

No common enemy.

In the second round Craig - No Time To Die beat Moore - Moonraker by 3 votes but Craig - Skyfall had a 17-0 walkover against Connery - You Only Live Twice.

Indicators point to Craig - Skyfall, so that goes through to the Semi-Finals.

Getting pretty tight towards the end of the knockout, with four of the top five involved in the Semi-Finals. Given that there is a Third-place death-off, there’s still quite a bit of voting that could affect form for those four, and the ones surrounding them might be able to take advantage; depending on outcomes, Moore-Spy and Dalton-Daylights could find themselves on the receiving end of a beneficial nudge here and there.

One suspects that outside the top 5 things are more settled, and Connery - Diamonds are Forever settles his wobbly bot into 10th place, a position from which one expects to have to use a winch to extract him.

The general performance of For Your Eyes Only in these Deathmatches - villain aside - is worth noting. Doesn’t appear to get massively popular voting but ambles along under the radar.

Connery - Dr No drops into 13th place but as the middle of the pack, the fulcrum as t’were (or is it pivot?), the balance against which all else is considered, perhaps that’s the natural home for that. Even at a (very) superficial at-a-glance level, I can see the case that the 12 below it just don’t match up but the 12 above it add something that’s worth adding to its basics.

At the finals stage, going into the last knockout match, the form table lead changes hands. Madly exciting, is it not? A 59 year-old performance takes on a 58 year-old performance. Someone may win but does that mean we have all lost out since? Probably not, but it is a bit odd.

CraigBond gets to smash himself up for Third place and he’d probably enjoy that.

Closeness of form table suggests there are still positions to play for. Semi-Final stage saw Dalton - The Living Daylights go up, up the wire into fifth place; will that only be a sweet distraction for an hour or twenty-four? Likewise, that top place wig-off might yet reverse itself once more…
