Deathmatch 2024

Right, well, the Deathmatch for Other Assorted Miscreants is now done; outcomes as follows

Deathmatch

WInner: Moonraker
Runner-Up: Diamonds are Forever
Third: The Spy who Loved Me
Fourth: Thunderball

It was only by one vote, in the end, and not overlooking that Moonraker didn’t win all its Deathmatches, so this was one of the hardest fought knockout wins this year. Did the introduction of Jaws into the Moonraker camp (and camp is probably the best word) help steer the victory?

Other Villainy Deathmatch outcomes to date

No.

2023 2024
Winner Moonraker Moonraker
Runner-Up FRWL Diamonds are Forever
Third TSWLM TSWLM
Fourth LALD Thunderball

Only run a couple of times, but Moonraker is the dominant force in this category. Swapping Charrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr and Jaws around this year between main Henchman and here doesn’t seem to have affected things. Personally, I consider the key player for Moonraker in this subject is Cavendish, whose method of dispatching folk seems to involve pressing them to a cucumber sandwich. For those of us sharing Samuel Johnson’s view of The Noble Cucumber, this sounds a particularly messy and unpleasant death, with little or no nutritional value, either.

Hmm. Did the 1980s actually happen? (Hope so, it was my childhood). Did the Brosnans actually happen? (This tends to confirm they did not, which pleaseth me and I shall stick with this Fake News because it confirms my prejudices).

Rarely, the top “honour” (pfft) was still to play for going into the final round of the knockout, and it emerges that Moonraker does the Double (it’s definitely Cavendish. Or the characterisation of senseless, unmitigated evil that is The Devil Dolly). Talking of senseless, unmitigated evil (commonplace for the run up to Christmas), The Baron will be happy that he can still rise a bit from the grave, even with half his head shot off. That Monday 6.30 a.m. feeling, artistically personified by a fifteen foot unkillable cackling voodoo demon.

Skyfell, is all I want to say about that. Ouch.

Some remarkable consistency otherwise, including consistently poor outcomes for 1985 onwards, and the favourable impression of Casino Royale is on the slide. Sort your villains out; they’re what makes individual Bond films stand out, not the increasing the personal misery each time for the lead character. That didn’t quite work, in terms of memorable persons of cheekiness. Bring back the Circus of Delinquency! Look at what’s been successful here; all of the Top Ten have a long Roster of Rascals.

Do that; Bond 26 solved. I have spake and am entitled to be heard because I am, mysteriously.

Octopussy aside, it’s really only the already stronger players that emerged with any benefit from this last round. Diamonds are Forever possibly overperforming, although everyone in Diamonds are Forever overperforms so perhaps that’s only true to itself and proud in its own skin. The Non-Botherers are risking staying just there, with only three rounds to go…

Fairly quiet category for Goldfinger this time out, just one point for its apparently statutory Top Ten finish. Major benefit here was obviously to Moonraker, gathering all four available points, and given that it did well in the last few categories last December, there could still be some turmoil to come. Jolly good.

Will do a running total on this after the tenth category (Sets & Locations) but it’s possible that Goldfinger’s lead 2/3 of the way in before December may have been eroded slightly. Would say Skyfall’s out of running for the top slot now due that recent disaster, and probably risks dropping out of the top ten completely. Still, much gratifying Death to come, so…

Blimey. Moonraker may already have won this category; that is some going and demolishes all the other players. However, the net effect is that the next three do qualify for the Second Round simply through picking up the scraps between them. TWINE, yeah, it’s all so grey isn’t it? Half of it underground, half of it in a tunnel, half (?) of it in a submarine and half (not sure this works now, a bit like TWINE) basically indoors; it’s all so dull-looking. For Your Eyes Only I suppose is pleasant enough, but little more than Mucky Uncle James’ cruise around the Med with a bearded lady in tow whilst on the lookout for a moistened typewriter. I acknowledge that makes For Your Eyes Only sound consideraby more interesting than it actually merits.

Bear in mind that in the knockouts, Moonraker has only got to two Finals but won them both. Ruthlessly efficient.

Personally I find the French locations in A View to a Kill rather lovely but I know that there’s a school of thought that the USA-set Bonds are a little unexotic? Spectre you can’t see most of the locations as it has been filmed through a jar of Marmite, and given the spectacle on show, not a very surprising win for The Spy who Loved Me here.

Lord alone knows what went on with the scoring here, but it’s all been checked and oddly, this is how it plays out. Casino Royale certainly a high scoring Lucky Loser. Yes, it’s The Group with Die Another Day in it so others scoring highly is a bit of a given, but I wonder if its sets and locations are worth a bit more recognition? Even if it is mostly Cornwall. Are these really worse than the efforts / otherwise put into The Living Daylights, which just ends up on Tatooine or somewhere.

Come to picturesque San Monique! Or not, as the case may be. Diamonds are Forever scrapes into Round 2, even though everything looks a bit tatty, and whilst Goldfinger performs its habitual escape from a group, can it maintain its record of appearing in a Top Ten? That’s not a particularly high score. OHMSS was always going to win this one, given the patchy competition.

Something to give Moonraker a run for its money, at least. Dr No gets through and that’s gratifying, as there’s a lot of interesting things going on in its sets and locations, even if they are more limited than many others. Licence to Kill does look a bit plain, doesn’t it? Not much love for the Stealth Ship going on; I thought that was OK but Tomorrow Never Dies does seem a bit more indoorsy than many.

This might be a foregone conclusion. The top two don’t seem to be in much danger of being caught, but still a long way to go. Goldfinger could slip below 10th place, although there’s a reasonable cushion there - but happen, it could.

That set is jaw droppingly gorgeous and one of Ken Adam’s finest creations. It deserves higher that 13th place🤷‍♂️

If only all us Moonraker fans could have pointed to this when all the Moonraker haters made fun of us.

Agreed. DAF’s accomplishment in melding Ken Adam sets with existing locations is extraordinary, e.g., the interiors created for Slumber Inc. and the Elrod House perfectly match their exteriors. The entire film looks like one gigantic Ken Adam-designed world.

Haters gonna hate, Mr. Hinx. Just gotta hold our head high, and straighten our pink tie.

With you… until the oil rig. Not special enough and never really followed why it “has” to be an oil rig as opposed to anything or anywhere else. I suppose that will be another subversive element. Film doesn’t make much of that environment, but perhaps that’s another subversive aspect itself. Always been underwhelmed by it. I suppose it shows that the Bond productions were so dominant they could hire an oil rig and re-establish their producer power after the notional setback of OHMSS, but it’s… it’s nonsense.

Could you have a Bathosub on land?

I agree that it is not special like the volcano in YOLT or Piz Gloria in OHMSS, but somehow appropriate for a film that features a car chase in a casino parking lot.

Definitely not a whizzbang ending, but as I argue, that “not-quite-a-Bond-finale” just adds to the charm/success of DAF as a failed 1970s version of 1960s Bond movie.

Could imagine that an oil rigg was seen as more spectacular back in 1971 than it is now. Also, we mustn’t forget that we don’t really know what the original finale would have looked like, as they had to save what could be saved with the explosions going off early.

On the other hand…

I remember petrol stations giving out posters of their respective oil rigs to kids back then:

It was a hugely adventurous theme, on par with the cutaway drawings of jet fighters the Zack comics sometimes ran.

Sadly, DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER makes next to nothing out of the setting or the general theme. Nine years later even NORTH SEA HIJACK would beat the hell out of Blofeld’s rig - and that consists largely of conferences and talking heads with only a limited amount of action.

It was a real concern back then - while the work was supposedly paid well enough it was also quite demanding, at times dangerous and nearly always uncomfortable. No internet, home entertainment or other ingenious little helpers that are available today to pass the time and make work shifts bearable.

Oil companies tried to attract with other conveniences, little cinemas, phoning home regularly or high end canteen menus. But the overall fear must have been that not enough young people were interested in that kind of work, away from home and family for long stretches and in oftentimes lousy weather.

So in order to gain some recognition with kids who’d otherwise would want to become pilots or policemen, Shell and their competitors set out to make us dream of the adventurous work on an oil rig, supply ship or as industry diver.

Fascinating debate about oil rigs notwithstanding, and completely ignoring that I started it, Diamonds are Forever remains where it is. A sort-of-halfway between excellent and execrable; somehow, that seems to fit.

Bit of other activity all round, Goldfinger creeping up the Top Ten as ever and For Your Eyes Only dropping badly (and I never quite followed how it was 10th seed anyway). Octopussy is 5th. Octopussy is 5th. I had to repeat that because it’s not a commonly used phrase. Given the choice in the second round between Octopussy and Thunderball, the vote went with a railway siding outside Peterborough rather than The frickin’ Bahamas. Oh, this silly old World of ours remains one of wonder and curiosity, m’doves.

Top two are fighting it out in the Quarter-Finals, so that could* be interesting.

*putting it no higher than that.

The Gilbert movies doing well and rightly so! Beautifully shot, on a grand scale and set in incredibly beautiful locations all over the world.

Albeit the other three Quarter-Finals resulted in massive wins, the Moonraker-You Only Live Twice match, Battle To The Death of the Gilberts (as t’were) was a draw.

Decided as follows:

Form not including this match: You Only Live Twice 90.03, Moonraker 87.24. Point to You Only Live Twice.
Points scored in Group Stage: 12 each, point each, so You Only Live Twice 2 - Moonraker 1
Votes gained including Quarter-Final: Moonraker 90, You Only Live Twice 81, point to Moonraker - 2-2
Goal difference including Quarter-Final: Moonraker 70, You Only Live Twice 64 - point to Moonraker - 3-2 to Moonraker.
Walkovers;1 apiece, point apiece, 4-3 to Moonraker.
Heaviest win: Moonraker by 19, You Only Live Twice by 16 (although uneven numbers of votes cast) - point to Moonraker, 5-3 to Moonraker. A more robust category would be the form percentage difference by which they won their Group (i.e. gap to 2nd place), which is Moonraker again so that’s a more secure 5-3
Round 2 victory: Moonraker by 4, You Only Live Twice by 10 - point to You Only Live Twice - 5-4 to Moonraker.
No common foe: No points.

Can’t think of any other differentiator so it’s Moonraker going through in the shootout - 5-4. That was quite squeaky.

Mixed result for You Only Live Twice, there. A draw with Moonraker damages Moonraker’s form more evidently, but You Only Live Twice is knocked out. Could still win the form table depending on the size of the chunks the remaining players gnaw from each other. Places 2 to 5 are fighting out the Semi-Finals and this could all still play to You Only Live Twice’s advantage,

Big drops for Octopussy and From Russia with Love because they got a bit mashed in the Quarter-Finals, but probably safe in the Top. Ten. Goldfinger maintains a Top Ten place unless something dramatic happens.

Another draw in the Semi-Finals for Sets & Locations, but a pretty clear outcome for the shoot-out this time:

Form percentage gap by which they won their respective groups: goes to OHMSS, so OHMSS 5 - The Spy who Loved Me 1
Round 2 victory margin: OHMSS by 12, The Spy who Loved Me by 6, so OHMSS 6 - The Spy who Loved Me 1.
Quarter-Final victory margin: OHMSS by 14, The Spy who Loved Me by 16 - making that OHMSS 6, The Spy who Loved Me 2
No common foe

OHMSS goes on to meet (yikes) Moonraker in THE FINAL. Goldfinger and The Spy who Loved Me still have dignity and form to play for.
