There is all the time in the world for that to happen.

Hello Scrumblenumpkin. Time to behave ourselves and consider the Form Table after the Semi-Final stage for “Bond”.

Bond Form (% shift) Place shift
1 Connery – Goldfinger 84.1 (-2.63) -
2 Connery – Thunderball 76.4 (-3.97) +1
3 Connery – FRWL 75.97 (-4.78) -1
4 Moore – TSWLM 68.87 (-) +1
5 Craig – Casino Royale 68.17 (-6.1) -1
6 Craig – Skyfall 64.07
7 Moore – FYEO 60
8 Moore – Moonraker 54.72
9 Craig – NTTD 54.72
10 Dalton – TLD 54.4
11 Lazenby – OHMSS 50.5
12 Connery – Dr No 47.1
13 Craig – QoS 42.13
14 Brosnan – TND 42.1
15 Craig – Spectre 39.54
16 Moore – LALD 38.92
17 Connery – DAF 38.15
18 Dalton – LTK 38.1
19 Moore – Octopussy 37.1
20 Brosnan – GoldenEye 36.83
21 Moore – TMwtGG 26.6
22 Brosnan – TWINE 21.05
23 Connery – YOLT 14.45
24 Brosnan – DAD 13.75
25 Moore – AVTAK 10.55

With just the Final and Third Place matches left, there’s still some capacity for change here within the top three, albeit they seem to stand quite far apart and above the rest. Craig - Casino Royale is doing pretty well but it finished second on form last year so unfortunately the mysterious Casino Royale trend towards negative Bonus Points this year seems likely to continue… Perhaps it overperformed last year?

I can reveal that this year I repeatedly chose against my longstanding preferences (apart from DAD and LTK; those two remain where they are not because of preference but law of nature). Not saying this has any influence, but perhaps others experience a similar reassessment of previously firmly held convictions.

I know what you mean. Even if just to see something else get the spotlight for a change. My mood has been on the more serious films lately but I have no doubt I’ll be jumping head first back into the fantastical before long.

Can I really ever choose anybody over Connery and Moore? I‘m too old for that.

Although, Lazenby did climb up some places for me - it could, however, also just be due to overexposure of the others.

I think a rise in Lazenby appreciation could be genuine. OHMSS did various Craig era elements decades prior, which is bound to interest fans who came on board from 2006 onwards.

Hey there BouncyBuns, stop admiring yourself in the back of a spoon and note please that we have reached the end of the Bond category for 2025. Time is just tearing by, which must mean we’re having fun, rather than contemplating the alarming onrush of our own mortality.

Knockout outcome

At least he’s sharing it out between himself. Of 16 placings, 11 go to Connery for only 3 films. However, with the Craig debut featuring 3 times itself, one could view these outcomes as it not mattering who The Shopping Channel or whoever now owns it all cast as next Bond, or it being terribly important because a strong debut obviously keeps the interest alive. A most juicy/moist/succulent contemplation, either way.

Couple of newly placed films this time, but it does begin to look like the Big Boys Club. Will they let anyone else join? More to the point, should they? Have to be there on merit and it’s looking again like some of these films might not have too much of that.

Final Form Table - Bond

Perhaps one could aver that the Top Five do stand as the exemplars of what one can do with the character, and the Final Five equally so when production line apathy/age sets in.

Bit of a shifting in the seeds, although that may be because I’ve spotted my own reflection and I am gorgeous. Over the years, some broad consistency but for Bonus Points, there have been some notable rises (Lazenby) and alarming falls (Moore - Live and Let Die) over the course of the year.

The leap in the perceived quality of lead performance between Die Another Day and Casino Royale does intrigue, although the Craig tenure can evidently be honestly described as “bit patchy, that”.

Most Valuable Player - requires a Knockout placing (4th or better) to be eligible

Hmm. This might go entirely as anticipated but there are still 9 categories to go; however, with 2 Grand Slams under its generously girthed belt, Goldfinger has started ominously well.

Despite the best efforts and massive increase in form of That Lazenby, OHMSS has yet to feature here, which is quite unusual for this stage of the competition. With the next category being “Women” it might be easy to suggest that it’ll roar into this at the end of the month, but this one depends on knockout placing and shocks can occur. Sometimes.

That said, A View to a Kill didn’t lose too many Bonus Points by having Moore - A View to a Kill perform pretty much as badly as every year. Mr Lazenby has shot OHMSS right on up the table due to a notable improvement in form outcome since last year. Casino Royale still seems to be on a downward spiral, despite a knockout placing and a reasonably high form placing for Mr Craig this time out (the knockout placing doesn’t actually count). However, he did finish second on form last year, so more points off, I’m afraid.

Despite running away with things last year, Goldfinger has even found time to improve its performance. Wow.

I was going to suggest Craig profits immensely from having his first go at an original Fleming idea. But is it really true? While the casino part - practically the entire novel - sits at the heart of the film, its nature has been significantly tweaked to add intrigue (did Bond’s contact work both sides?), action (the stairwell fight; although I cannot think what the hell Bond intended to do with Vesper when they set out to it), emotion (the mirror/shower scene is one of the best amalgamations of raw terror and tenderness in any film) and a bit of fun (Mathis and Bond observing the police as they find the planted body).

Mind you, the story beats are all there, battle across the green baize, allies, female interest, defeat-salvage-victory, abduction-chase-torture. But watching CASINO ROYALE and reading Casino Royale are two significantly different things and I’d argue the former profits quite a bit from bringing the latter into the bigger frame of a quality production half a century after Fleming wrote the story.

On the other hand, Fleming’s story at the centre lends CASINO ROYALE an element rarely present in Bond films these last few decades: suspense - an emphasis on the buildup, a battle of wits before the final confrontation. Where Bond couldn’t very well just draw his gun - or a steak knife - and eliminate the obstacle. For a Bond film that’s a quality that’s been oftentimes lost after FRWL and OHMSS.

Now towel yourself off and pay attention to the outcomes of the Group Stage for Women

Kara 4 1 1 2 28 41 -13 41.6 4
Stacey 4 0 0 4 2 68 -66 2.88 0

Oh Tracy; oh Stacey. Probably very obvious at the tip and the arse of this table; a bit more uncertain in the middle. That is a pretty shocking outcome for Ms Sutton, but she can console herself with that cheque for $5 million… she tore it up? Doesn’t even deserve last place.

Group B Played W D L F A GD % Points

That’s a fairly huge win for Ms Lynd who, according to that memorial in No Time to Die, is only in her early 20s. That’s a bit creepy, y’know. Talking of age, Octopussy outperforms the seeded Wai Lin. Might be The Change. Would I have made such a sexist comment about the Bonds? No. Cope. You are on a James Bond website.

The good Dr Swann doesn’t improve much in her second appearance, and that score won’t qualify as a Lucky Loser. Domino suffers beautifully to the top, but might be a bit sulky about it; lovely. Top two largely bikini-based. Also lovely. The bad Dr Jones does her usual thing and as ever, Christmas is over before you know it.

Another reversal here, with Pussy overcoming Anya, which is an image to warm one’s heart as the nights draw in. The For Your Eyes Only element continues its mysterious popularity across the categories, with Ms Havelock getting to be a Lucky Loser, if only by a whisker. Good night, Goodnight.

The Group with Die Another Day in it does what The Group with Die Another Day in it does. Still think Moneypenny is more likely as the Bond girl of Skyfall, and although I have said this before, next year will be, to see if that jiggers things up a smidge. Quite a close top three, rubbing up against each other… 'scuse me…

Not a vast amount of jiggle-jiggle in this round, and it might be very, very hard to dislodge Vesper unless one blows her up and dust Bond in her ashes as he runs and fights and drives and does Bond stuff. Weird, that.

There was a draw between Anya Amasova and Domino in the Quarter-Finals but Domino slips through as follows:

Higher Group Stage placing
Better Group Stage points
Better Goal Difference
Better contribution to Bonus Points
Better form generally (fnarr)

Both had an equally high Group Stage win (by 17)

Anya won one factor only - better Second Round win - but otherwise it was a pretty overwhelming win for the sulky lady in the bikini.

It’s tough at the top (and very flabby at the bottom) and it’s still feasible that Vesper, blown to the wind as she is (I wonder if that’s meant to be a joke), can be caught. All now depends on the Final, playing out until tomorrow. One of Vesper and Tracy has to die. Again.

You make me realize that that explosion is foreshadowing Bond´s explosive death.

It can’t be that these films are so well thought out, can it?

…which looks likely. Thunderball and The Spy who Loved Me haven’t actually won anything yet but are consistent Top Ten performers. Might hit a wall with Victim (Thunderball was poor there last year) but with this being the Year of Feliccia, who knows?

It’s still feasible that this won’t be Goldfinger but it is a bit worrying that it has outperformed itself compared to last year. That might set up a massive fall for next year. Might.

Die Another Day has performed just as badly as last year, so some things are right in the World, after all.
