Deathmatch 2025

I love my CommanderBond.net Peace Prize trophy and medal. Polystyrene but sprayed gold/weird orange, the trophy is a depiction of Dou-Dou en repose, held aloft by replicas of Dr No’s metal claws, Melina Havelock’s moustache and Elvis’ wig. The medal, one shall wear with great pride and especially when I’m deworming the dog.

I instigated the award, I was the only voter and still I’m not as corrupt as FIFA.

Anyway, clumsy and leaden satire aside, let’s subject you to the form table after the Semi-Final stage of Other Villainy:

Still a bit to play for, evidently, and although the 3rd Place Death-Off brings up a repeat fixture between Live and Let Die and Thunderball, that doesn’t mean that the supercomputer is buggered, nor that there can’t be a different outcome…

OK, so the final fallout of the Other Villainy category for 2025 provides the below. There is actually something interesting this time.

There’s nothing here after 1979. Modern Villainy is rubbish. Modern Henching is rubbish. Modern Other Villainy is rubbish. A theme doesn’t so much emerge as announce itself, screaming.

The 1960s take half the places. The Reboot years don’t do too badly with 1/6 of the places. The 1980s - ah, the decayed decade - nuffink.

The Spy who Loved Me scores a Grand Slam across the Knockout and the Form, which is impressive enough and will probably give it a bit of a leg up when it comes to the final positions at the end of the month, not least because Goldfinger performed (relatively, for Goldfinger) poorly. Peak Other Villainy seems to be the 1970s, which is amusing.

Peak Other Villainy plainly isn’t after 1983, and even then Octopussy’s a lowish Seed. This requires some attention.

Some consistency, but also some fairly alarming drops (Licence to Kill seems to be out of favour this year, generally). That’ll impact the Bonus Points position, as will Goldfinger’s small drop in form…

Even with a slightly underwhelming performance, Goldfinger still notches up another Top Ten Finish. The Spy who Loved Me grabbing lots of points for this category shifts it up the table, but is there enough time left to be really impactful?

Probably not.

The “interesting” thing is Goldfinger dropping a couple of points from last year and OHMSS gaining three; that all draws it a little closer as the final three categories beckon…

With the Group Stage of Sets & Locations done, unleash yer peepers on this:

Not sure there’s ever been such a high percentage for a Group winner; two walkovers and two matches with just one vote against in each. Moonraker is indeed out of this World, in a slightly terrifying manner given there’s still all of this category to go. Interesting that A View to a Kill does so poorly (although not as poorly as some); the locations seem quite pleasant but maybe that is just not enough. No film located in any substantial way in the United States tops a group; Goldfinger gets closest, but then it would, wouldn’t it?

Group B Played W D L F A GD % Points

Licence to Kill is really getting a hammering this year, and not least in the Bonus Points challenge. Perhaps its fly-blown tatty locations were never going to get it very far here. The Spy who Loved Me comes very close to Moonraker and one suspects they will meet in the Final but odder things have happened, like Tomorrow Never Dies being a bit underappreciated here? Albeit it’s obvious that various sets are all built in the one big shed, I s’pose.

Chaotic Group, this, given that despite better form, Diamonds are Forever and to a lesser extent Quantum of Solace don’t capitalise on that with more wins. Diamonds are Forever is of course set largely in the USA so it was fated not to do that well.

Group D Played W D L F A GD % Points
OHMSS 4 4 0 0 60 4 56 93.75 12

TWINE 4 0 0 4 5 57 -52 8.21 0

The only Group without any Ken Adam in it but still the 1960s film wins out. Hmm. TWINE seems to be filmed through a cup of mud by depressed people so it’s not surprising that comes rock bottom.

Group E Played W D L F A GD % Points

Surprise outcome here being that The Man with the Golden Gun gets through as a Lucky Loser, and I suppose the locations and sets are fine even if big bags of bog all happen in them. Die Another Day clings on jealously to a last place, although that’s not the worst it has done and some of its locations and sets do at least try, which is more than can be said for a lot of the rest of it.

That’s a pretty intimidating top four, perhaps top five if you like getting moist. Significant gap there between those and the rest of it. Across the Groups, seven of the fifty matches produced a walkover which I suspect is the most ever, so it looks like there are some very strongly held views pro- and contra- here, which is a pleasing bedrock for upsetting levels of carnage.

Ooh. Both OHMSS and Goldfinger picked up points, but OHMSS picked up more, so goes top. Also for a bit of variety. Licence to Kill must have overperformed last year and given that one of the categories yet to come is “Score” it might be totally beyond rescue soon. Still, it is open to it to improve significantly next year. It couldn’t do much worse - could it?

Yes, yes, most impressive. May I touch it? Will it go off if I do? It does pong a bit. Interestingly veined down the side. Creamy.

The top four are shuttling around, and arguably Thunderball is keeping its flipper in the mix although a Quarter-Final against Moonraker might be a challenge.

Big loser this time around is Octopussy, shot out of a cannon and out of the Top Ten; which on Top Ten finishes to date still leaves A View to a Kill as the best of the 1980s so far this year. Hmm.

From Russia with Love rises, Goldfinger does a Goldfingering thing (urr) and Casino Royale puts up a plucky but one suspects doomed fight to be best of the rest. It may after all have been better to have set the casino in Outer! Space! I would consider that a distinct improvement. You can have that idea for free, Bezos you ghastly tick. Whilst on, it’s quite obvious where the deliveries are meant to go if no-one’s in; why do your truculent persons dump them in the hedge?

Enough; onwards and upwards. Unless you are Octopussy, obv.

So it’s basically the top four now, and they are the Semi-Finalists and that was probably always going to be the case. It is closer than it looks there, so a form win for Moonraker isn’t a complete given, however probable it may look.

Desert, Las Vegas and an oil rig overcome Balkans, Istanbul and The Orient Express. Such is democracy. Always was an iffy idea. Why are my hands suddenly so small and satsuma-like?

I can definitely get behind that top four!

Interesting to see only 1 top 10 Peter Lamont placing. I don’t want to belittle anyone’s contribution to the series that I love, but Ken Adam and Syd Cain’s aesthetic was just on a different level to Lamont, and think their absence is one of the chief reasons that, despite incredible stunts, plots and performances, 80’s onwards Bond never again felt as magnificent as it did in ‘79.

No thank you; but it is kind of you to offer. Now put your clothes on, and I’ll buy you an ice cream. Not that that’s itself uncreepy.

Whilst we contemplate what Bibi Dahl is actually for on any sort of dramatic basis other than to generate some very disturbing ideas, we can soothingly distract ourselves with how the Form Table is going now that the Semi-Finals for Sets & Locations are through:

There’s still something to play for, if not necessarily top spot unless a very great surprise is to emerge in the final round of the Knockout. That being doubtful, places 2 to 4 seem up for grabs but if You Only Live Twice suffers a similar hammering there, perhaps even place 5.

Some startling ups and downs here on previous years, which will stuff the Bonus Points thing up very, very much. Given the trend and where the majority of the Seeds find themselves, perhaps we just ran out of interesting things and places to look at, for a while.

Skyfall was 16th for Sets & Locations last year but 8th this year; a significant jump puts it in the running. GoldenEye fell off a dam. Licence to Kill reached the heady heights of 24th so gets a positive point! It’s not done yet but there seems to be a distinct top three.

AM I TENSE? I AM. I FEEL THE NEED TO LASH OUT WILDLY.

Out wildly lash, I did. Look, you’ve got another leg, it doesn’t matter, don’t be so selfish.

Anyway, the year hurtles on and we’re already done with the Group Stage for Score:

Seasonal thought: yes, I do know how Christmas trees are grown; stop asking me. They are grown in pooh-pooh. Evidently not pooh-pooh is the rest of the score of OHMSS which seems to merit its status as top seed, but that’s not a wholly infallible pos-ish. Let’s see. Dr No fated not to do too well here, but that’s not the lowest of the low. Do you know what that might be? It’s not dissimilar to what they grow Christmas trees in. For Your Eyes Only gets by as a Lucky Loser but I suspect that’s because it’s neither of the other two.

GoldenEye’s approach to hurling some pans at a wall doesn’t seem to pay off too well, although it’s not last and Licence to Kill maintains its status as this year’s ray-tail whipping girl. It’ll probably like that. Thought Moonraker might have done slightly better, not that it’s too shabby, but still a long way to go yet.

The Group of Death, which is appropriate for this be Deathmatch, yeah? On the basis of form, which is the basis so you shut right up, The Man with the Golden Gun gets through as a Lucky Loser; this might be perceived as an injustice, but you’re just going to have to put on your little coping hat and smile, aren’t yer?

This looks a more regular group save that Live and Let Die doesn’t win it which confirms that THE WORLD IS WRONG. I have spake. That’s a terrible score (arf!) for Die Another Day - but is it really that bad or just because it’s stapled to Die Another Day? It is a bit busy, I suppose.

Thunderball wins! THE WORLD IS NOT WRONG. Sus-spectre-ing that Spectre is low because of its recycling policy. Tomorrow Never Dies will get through as a Lucky Loser but whether it can achieve a Top Ten spot is doubtful; the Second Round seems to have puked up some challenging matter, much like m’doggie. Still, one can probably grow a Christmas tree in it.

Ooh-la-la; there may yet be an upset here. The score for Skyfall seeming to have spurted off and earned many a Bonus Point, the final category leaves this open to all of the top three. That OHMSS did exactly as well as it did for Score last year means no additional Bonus Points here, which is on the one hand logical but on the other hand seems a bit unfair.

Life’s like that. And so is the final category for 2025 - DEATH.

Death, she’s a-comin’. Scythe yer down, she will. There’s no escape.

Moonraker is, of course, grim and violent and so much more insidiously vicious than the likes of, say, Licence to Kill, but much better at getting away with it. Octopussy gets through as Lucky Loser despite suffering a walkover/dogbiting at the hands of Moonraker. Die Another Day doesn’t get anywhere despite some interesting deaths and I suppose people die in Spectre but their lives were not of note so their deaths are equally nothingnesses.

A couple of big deaths probably helps No Time to Die here, however challenging they may be for some. Goldfinger has interesting ones, granted. The others are much of a muchness, although TWINE scores surprisingly low given that Bond shoots his lover in the head. Hmm.

Quite a low scoring group and not much between the top three on their form, but each of them have unusual deaths in them and the other two don’t, really - accordingly, not that much of a surprise here.

Again, probably favouring the creative rather than just getting one’s self shot or, in the case of Agent Fields, homaged to death. Snowblowers, flamethrowers, boiling mud and Bombe Surprise up the botty-bot win out. It does appear we like the more imaginative approach.

From Russia with Love, as a seed, falls quite a bit and whilst it does have some of the more brutal deaths in the series, they’re all (relatively) realistic, save for the spikey shoe. Licence to Kill presents an orgy of silly deaths, as does The Spy who Loved Me albeit not as desperately. Given that The Man with the Golden Gun is about the World’s best hitman, it’s a curiously bloodless affair and achieves a deserved last place.

One could call it for Moonraker right now, but there’s still a way to go even if it is looking like everything else will (it says here) have their faces melted by a space laser gun.

Of potentially more interest is the narrow range between places 5 and 12, which bodes bloody for the Second Round. Where Skyfall eventually finishes is going to determine the Bonus Points, because…

Lordy. Last year Goldfinger won the form category and it could still do so but would not be able to gain any further Bonus Points even if it did. Odds are it will lose points here. Last year Skyfall finished in 17th place on form so it’s currently on track to beat that, but it has a tough Second Rounder against Thunderball and could drop…

MY GOD, IT IS SO TENSE THAT I HAVE ABOLISHED THE DUGONG.

Some brutal Second Round matches meant that the top half did get all shook up; The Living Daylights benefiting in particular. It does have some nasty death in it; lovely. A distinct top three, though, and it’s not a given any more that Moonraker wins this.

MY GOD, IT IS SO TENSE THAT I SHALL MORALISE POINTLESSLY.

Yes, let’s. No-one’s looking.

Points still of “interest” - number 1 position is still up for grabs, and although the only knockout player to improve its form, Diamonds are Forever could be holding onto ninth place only temporarily; rough and tumble in its Semi-Final might see it drop out of the Top Ten completely.

MY GOD, IT IS SO TENSE THAT I AM COMING TO GUT YOU AND THEN WEAR YOU AS A HAT.

Moonraker probably has won this and given the top six, the Lewis Gilbert way of DEATH seems to appeal to us. On reflection, one of the more creative periods of exterminating fictional characters. Can Diamonds are Forever find it in its embittered, vicious heart to claw its way back into the Top Ten?

MY GOD, IT IS SO TENSE THAT I SHALL CHOOSE TO LISTLESSLY ABHOR THE CONCEPT OF GOODNESS.
