‘Collectors items’ is the term now.

July 1st. And the withdrawal symptoms start.

Thanks again, Jim, for sideswiping us so deliciously once again. Nobody does it better (otherwise I would try to continue).

You mean that’s it?

No more……..Moneypenny???

Damn. I suspect that this secretary got to him.

Miss Moneypenny… will return. The incident in 1981 when she decided to dress up like Quentin Crisp after a rough night on the Dubonnet, has at the very least to be accounted for, and possibly result in a prosecution. September bodes ill for this obviously psychotic cannibal.

Thank you Jim for a wonderful June. Your daily dose of Bond helped me get through another Pride month.

September 1.

Y’know, I nearly forgot this.

I would say it was last night’s birthday* Lafite Rothschild rather than an adventure in dementia, so let’s pretend it was a lifestyle selection and I actively chose to forget.

*53. Dear oh dear, I was in my twenties when I started pestering this place. I wasted time, now time doth waste me.

However, in the potentially rich vein of electing to forget things and rendering it an active rather than degenerating exercise, which of these things what the Bond series has flung at us would you rather choose to forget in order to enhance one’s general appreciation of the series?

  • Anya Amasova’s eccentric woolly hat thing
  • Ninja Connery’s baggy grey pyjamas

Due to my being initiated/imprinted/enslaved/mind-controlled by watching TSWLM at an impressionable age of 8 years old (probably a kind of child abuse) nothing in that film can do anything wrong in my mind, not even Anya‘s headwear (I only have/had eyes for anything below it anyway).

But the grey pajamas in YOLT…

… well, I might have had similar ones at some time. But if I must choose - yes, those. Although they must have been very comfy for expanding tummies from leading men.

In other words: welcome back, Jim! It’s been too long.

But we would still have Connery’s baggy performance. Wooly hat needs to be memory-holed.

I have always found it curious that she wears a woolly hat in the middle of summer in Sardinia, where it must be at least forty degrees.

But Amasova and Bond were going to take a speedboat trip to Stromberg’s Atlantis base, so the woolly hat might not have been all that weird, even in Sardinia’s summer. I’ve spent several summer vacations around the Mediterranean and out on the water you could find any kind of temperature from stifling to rather chilly. Then again, my last sunburn I caught in Ireland, I’m demonstrably not qualified to judge…

By the grey pjs we are talking about this, aren’t we?

This is indeed a pretty weird combo, what looks like a polyester turtleneck intended to be worn under a shirt and the Japanese version of fatigues in grey. The headgear doesn’t actually help the look. Interestingly, Tanaka’s whole ninja army wears this combo and the questionable colour and combination is supposedly a tactical decision (of Tanaka, one assumes). But the approach to the volcano happens at nighttime and a darker shade would have been the more logical choice; especially when the whole operation consists of a frontal attack and your forces are compromised right from the go anyway.

But however we look at it, our retinas would thank us if they never had to see the above. So the grey pjs can go for me.

But something tells me (maybe a little bird?) that when a ninja stands before you and he’s wearing this.. fill in the blanc.., you will not dare to tell him, right?

My best decision ever about taking a piece of clothing to a vacation was a (hand-)knitted sweater in Sagres, Portugal (and, mind you, this was a three weeks backpack Inter Rail trip in the late 1980s, and before the place mutated from a fisherman’s village to a surfing hot spot) – something that one would take to a skiing holiday in Kitzbuehel. It felt like one could catch a heat stroke during daytime, but it was always chilly at night (the local version of the Undertaker’s Wind)

For all the depiction of ostensibly fine living through the film series, one aspect that has seemed to be under-represented given its prominence in Fleming’s work is food, and specifically Bond stopping to eat. I fully appreciate this itself eats time in between murdering, explosions and weak puns, although very often these Fleming scenes had some exposition purpose, if only into Bond’s rather fragile character and underdeveloped school-dinners tastes rather than propelling the plot.

There are certainly examples of meals in the films - The Quiche, a nibbled dinner with Scaramanga, Kamal Khan’s racist banquet, the occasional hotel breakfast which is subject to that silly film habit of taking one mouthful and then leaving abandoned to waste an amount that could feed a famished family for a fortnight - but in particular, two regular Fleming tropes don’t seem to have been depicted.

Insofar as you can steer this particular ship, which would you wish to see in the new series at least a couple of times, say, if not every time should the series last more than one film (doubtful)?

  • Bond’s very particular at-home breakfast for one

Tossed salad and scrambled eggs.

The breakfast at home for one - turning the probably much too young actor chosen into a particular weirdo which would be so much fun.

Here comes the green behind the ears, not like any previous Bond looking guy, stopping to sit down alone for his favorite meal of the day. And no interruptions from bed conquests and/or Moneypenny.

Oh, how that would wreck the new target group which skips breakfast or can only eat while bombarded by bro talk.

Hm - I can see a pre-credits with quick cuts of all the breakfast items being laid out meticulously, intercut with a gun being cleaned and rebuilt equally obsessively compulsively and other weapons laid out and checked and a long, loving close-up on the wristwatch of preference, and this all goes on for a minute or so and then a 'phone rings and we get our first sight of NewBond picking up and answering with the “Bond, James Bond” line, as much character as there is now established and then, I dunno, something blows up and someone starts singing. It’d be cheap, anyway.

I went with the at breakfast for one. Were that to happen, me might also get our first sight of James Bond’s housekeeper May.
