Knockout outcomes for this category over the years

This is a bit tricky given the merging of Song category with Score category. Up to and including 2025, Song looked like this:

2021 2022 2023 2024 2025
Winner Live and Let Die Live and Let Die Live and Let Die Live and Let Die Live and Let Die
Runner-Up Casino Royale The Spy who Loved Me The Spy who Loved Me Goldfinger Diamonds are Forever
Third The Spy who Loved Me OHMSS You Only Live Twice Diamonds are Forever The Spy who Loved Me
Fourth You Only Live Twice Goldfinger Casino Royale OHMSS You Only Live Twice

…and up to and including 2025, Score looked like this:

2023 2024 2025
Winner OHMSS OHMSS OHMSS
Runner-Up You Only Live Twice Moonraker Moonraker
Third Moonraker Diamonds are Forever You Only Live Twice
Fourth Diamonds are Forever You Only Live Twice Goldfinger

Some familiar names across both, although possibly the merging of the categories has not been to Live and Let Die’s favour, but more so to Moonraker’s and Thunderball’s.

Justice has to be seen to be done. Seen it. Done, it be.

Most Valuable Player (have to get a placing in a knockout to qualify)

It might, after all, be Moonraker’s year but there’s a long, long way to go yet.

2021 and 2022 it was Songs only, the Score category commencing in 2023. For 2023 onwards, the average of the two categories has been entered, hence the fractions. Are you still with me? I’m not.

Some have benefited from the merger; some most assuredly not and Dr No remains a difficult listen down-which to boogie.

Taken as the difference between this year’s form finish and the one from either Score or Song last year that causes the least damage. I must be feeling generous, although that’s not a characteristic I value very highly, and nor should you.

It might, after all, be Moonraker’s year, etc…

Right, so, new category with Action Sequences & Stunts and in certain quarters it has hurled Blofeld’s cat amongst the double-taking pigeons. Jolly good sport.

I think that’s the first time For Your Eyes Only, otherwise a tribute to colossal mediocrity, has ever won a Group. There is a lot of running about in it, one admits, usually to distract from the fact that it makes not one femtoatom of sense. But, still, an achievement. Nothing happens in The Man with the Golden Gun and even zhuzhing-up with a penny-whistle just doesn’t work. Fascinations galore with the fate of Goldfinger; we may have found its weak spot. There is a lot of hanging about, true. That score won’t get it into the Second Round, which is a novelty. Actually something of a shock. The sort instigated by dropping an electric fire into me bathtub.

Die Another Day 4 0 0 4 15 53 -38 22.08 0

The Spy who Loved Me does have the stunt, arguably the car chase and lots of lovely massacring at its conclusion, so not a surprise, but perhaps Live and Let Die coming second is? Diamonds are Forever, a depiction of the results of ingesting lard, is a sitty (I said sitty) down, snarly affair rather than anything exertive but still, even then, it sees off the multi-millions thrown at trying to get us to engage with Die Another Day, which yet again finds itself dangling off the precipice in a non-too-convincing way.

TWINE 4 0 0 4 13 51 -38 20.31 0

Convincing performance by a Brosnan film shocker! But none-too-shocking really; Tomorrow Never Dies seemed bound to do pretty well. That said, TWINE has lots going on but it all seems a bit diluted and underpowered. No Time to Die gets through to the Second Round pretty clearly, whereas swarms of ninjas don’t; I don’t make the World, so I am free to despair at it.

Dr No 4 0 0 4 2 58 -56 6.7 0

Well, Dr No was always going to suffer a bit here - whilst active, murdering a bedtime spider is probably no match for harpoons and jetpacks, exploding heads and cocaine tankers, and whatever it is that’s happening in Quantum of Solace - but its immediate sequel did walk over it which tends to suggest they saw they could spend a bit more on whizzbangs second time around, and changed course quickly. Interesting group, this one, with significantly varying approaches to “action”.

I was thinking GoldenEye might have done a bit better given some stunts that have become signature to the series, but there y’go; it does however reach the Second Round, and two Brosnans getting out of their groups is a rarity. Lots is thrown at us in Spectre; does any of it really land? It does seem lethargic.

Category is yet to settle and as a new one, the seedings and pots were against the overall final positions at the end of December 2025, so this was always going to be a touch haywire. Goldfinger, Goldfinger, Goldfinger… oh dear. Most of the ones not getting into the Second Round are a bit fat and elderly, or just scenes of sit-about, or just cretinous displays of the fundamentally unengaging. Except the ninjas.

A bit of movement at the top, and very loose at the bottom, but enough about how I age. Not a lot happening in the middle but the Quarter-Finals will sort that. Moonraker just about clings onto a Top Ten place although it could find itself higher up later on, depending on the violence yet to be administered during this category.

No movement in places but those form percentages are narrowing so still an amount to play for - the top three can easily swap around quite merrily over the final stages of the knockout.

Albeit ending on the same form as Moonraker, Tomorrow Never Dies finishes higher simply by dint of having been in the fray for longer. It’s had years of never getting into any Top Ten, so with this new category, its level may have been unearthed.

Ooh, a bit of wibble-wobble. I do like a bit of wibble-wobble. Most likely outcome I fear is that Thunderball will slip a bit. Do people not like jetpacks? Mine still works fine, as does my harpoon, as I fly o’er the countryside meting out experimental justice. That I do this dressed as my own widow can get a bit fraught for those immediately beneath me if a gust’s up. I blame the conch chowder.

MY GOD IT IS ALL SO TENSE I HAVE JUST ASKED CHAT GPT TO CREATE A HIGHLY SEXUALISED IMAGE OF MRS JIM AND IT CLAIMS THAT IT CANNOT IMPROVE UPON REALITY. I SUSPECT IT’S BEEN GOT AT.

Goldfinger being Seed 9 is a bit random given how poorly it did here but it may take another year or so for this to settle overall.

Brosnan – TWINE 4 0 0 4 17 63 -46 21.25 0

Connery’s performance in From Russia with Love may be hard to beat, although it’s not as far ahead of its competition from other Groups as may be thought. Connery in Dr No being preferred fairly significantly over Craig’s last go is interesting. Moore’s most interestingly peevish performance still outstrips the Brosnan go; the Brosnan try doesn’t make it to the Second Round. A theme develops. Saved the series, he did; more or less on his own, some say.

Craig – QoS 4 1 0 3 32 44 -16 42.13 3
Brosnan – DAD 4 0 0 4 9 67 -58 11.85 0

The Brosnan try doesn’t make it to the Second Round. A theme continues. Saved the series, he did; more or less on his own, some say. Quite a range of performances here, with Moore’s messy Octopussy effort demonstrating them all in one film, occasionally in the same line of “dialogue”. Craig’s Quantum of Solace performance makes it through as the last of the lucky losers, although one may wish to review one’s understanding of the word “lucky”.

The Brosnan try doesn’t make it to the Second Round. A theme bangs on. Saved the series, he did; more or less on his own, some say. It was the closest to getting through to the Second Round but it failed. A very clear winner here, though, again playing to the “marginally less farcical” reading of the “character”. The Connery - You Only Live Twice effort falls victim to its own reputation of being lazy, bored and bloated. Being myself lazy, bored and bloated, it speaks to me and one day very, very soon, it’ll speak to you too, and then you’ll finally appreciate its middle-aged ennui. My hero. Got walked over completely by Craig’s Casino Royale turn, though. Or parkoured over; it all seems so energetic.

The Brosnan try doesn’t make it to the Second Round. A theme concludes. Saved the series, he did; more or less on his own, some say. Can’t even get over Bloaty Sean the washed-up stinky Minky, although he’d probably need a stepladder. Can’t even get over George Bleedin’ Lazenby. Dear oh dear oh dear. Still don’t quite get why Moore’s underpowered turn in For Your Eyes Only tends to be favoured; the stuntmen are busy but he seems wrinkly and corpulent. Wrinkly Minky.

Connery in Thunderball did win this knockout category a few years ago, so definitely a dark horse, or at least a slightly greyish pony. One would have thought, given all the fuss about shifting the character to his strengths, the Dalton performance would be performing better but since those strengths seem to be DRACULA RAGE CRETIN, perhaps not. Poor result for Roger Moore and his Moving Mole of Mystery in A View to a Kill, but actually not as bad as last year.

Not a vast amount of movement this time, and Goldfinger has had a couple of rough categories (by its standards) - but you can never rule it out completely…

Sorry, Jim, but I believe you have one typo in Group D. Roger Moore’s For Your Eyes Only actually had 3 wins, 0 draws, and 1 loss. Other than that, solid as usual. :+1:

Second Round for Bond is dead; dead, I tells yer. Form Table is what it is, which is:

Form (% shift) Place shift
1 Connery – FRWL 94 (+1.5) -
2 Craig – Casino Royale 86.7 (-0.8) -
3 Connery – Goldfinger 79.18 (+1.03) +1
4 Moore – TSWLM 78.54 (-0.21) -1
5 Connery – Thunderball 76.44 (-1.06) -
6 Moore – Moonraker 68.7 (-0.5) +1
7 Craig – Skyfall 66.22 (-1.28) +1
8 Dalton – The Living Daylights 64.56 (-6.42) -2
9 Connery – Dr No 58.34 (+2.09) +1
10 Moore – FYEO 55.18 (-5.47) -1
11 Craig – No Time to Die 46.56 (-4.69) -
12 Lazenby – OHMSS 43.82 (-6.78) -
13 Moore – Octopussy 43.4 (-5.28) +1
14 Dalton – Licence to Kill 42.34 (-6.41) -1
15 Craig – QoSolace 40.36 (-1.77) +1
16 Brosnan – TND 39.08 (-) +1
17 Moore – Live and Let Die 35 (-8.75) -2
18 Connery – DAF 33.75
19 Craig – Spectre 32.7
20 Moore – TMwtGGun 28.75
21 Brosnan – GoldenEye 26.25
22 Brosnan – TWINE 21.25
23 Connery – You Only Live Twice 19.75
24 Moore – AVTAK 12.5
25 Brosnan – Die Another Day 11.85

Top five seem to be where the quality is at; the remainder much more fluid and Moore - Live and Let Die took a hell of a beating. Interesting to see Connery - Dr No vying for a Top Ten place but it has a challenging Quarter-Final ahead of it.

Quarter-Finals line-up - the first four Connerys; Moore in his superstar stage of the late 1970s; Craig in Casino Royale and Skyfall. Sounds about right to me.

MY GOD IT IS SO TENSE THAT THE LINING OF MY SWIMMING POOL HAS COME LOOSE AND IT’S FULL OF ALGAE. THIS IS ITS USUAL STATE, HOWEVER. NOT EVEN THE DOG (UNFUSSY ABOUT WHERE IT ROLLS AT THE BEST OF TIMES) WILL GO NEAR. I SHOULD PROBABLY DO SOMETHING ABOUT THIS BUT I KNOW I WON’T. I BLAME VANDALS. OR PERHAPS VISIGOTHS.

Quarter-Finals for Bond DONE. Done done done done done. And therefore:

Form (% shift) Place shift
1 Connery – FRWL 86.67 (-7.33) -
2 Craig – Casino Royale 83.37 (-3.33) -
3 Connery – Goldfinger 78.95 (-0.23) -
4 Moore – TSWLM 77.48 (-1.06) -
5 Connery – Thunderball 72.03 (-4.41) -
6 Dalton – The Living Daylights 64.56 (-) +2
7 Moore – Moonraker 62.8 (-5.9) -1
8 Craig – Skyfall 59.82 (-6.4) -1
9 Moore – For Your Eyes Only 55.18 (-) +1
10 Connery – Dr No 52.32 (-6.02) -1
11 Craig – No Time to Die 46.56
12 Lazenby – OHMSS 43.82
13 Moore – Octopussy 43.4
14 Dalton – Licence to Kill 42.34
15 Craig – QoSolace 40.36
16 Brosnan – TND 39.08
17 Moore – Live and Let Die 35
18 Connery – DAF 33.75
19 Craig – Spectre 32.7
20 Moore – TMwtGGun 28.75
21 Brosnan – GoldenEye 26.25
22 Brosnan – TWINE 21.25
23 Connery – You Only Live Twice 19.75
24 Moore – AVTAK 12.5
25 Brosnan – Die Another Day 11.85

There’s been very little movement amongst the top five, which might be an indication of their inherent qualities. Connery - Dr No secures his film a Top Ten finish, which feels about right. Still baffled about the relative popularity of Moore - For Your Eyes Only; I just think he looks knackered.

Anyway, tension. VERY MUCH TENSION. THANK YOU FOR YOUR ATTENTION TO THIS MATTER.
