Drawn to 007 - Dynamite’s new hardcovers and beyond

OO7

Much slower paced than it’s immediate predecessors, but much to its benefit as it allows it to play out like a novel.

Any surprise characters?

In chapter 1, no

Like I said, it plays on being long form, chapter 1 is placing Bond and his relationship with OO3

It’s definitely more of a slow burn than some of the other recent runs of the comic. I’m intrigued at where it’s going and 003 seems like an interesting character. Her being Bond’s mentor and the one who trained him in being a 00 is an interest wrinkle.

Spoilers

It was heavily hinted at in the synopsis, but I am rather disappointed at Gwendolyn Gann, the former 003 being seemingly fridged in the first issue. Especially since the author was hyping her up in interviews and when I got to meet him in person at a local con. Probably means she isn’t actually dead, so I’ll take a wait and see approach.

Definitely think that’s a bluff, it does seem like she’ll be the main focus of the story

I haven’t read any of the Dynamite Bond comics before but I recently picked up the hard copy of Vargr and I have to say I’m disappointed. I found the comic to be overtly violent and graphic. Yes Bond can be violent but I don’t want to see blood and guts, those things can be implied and be just as effective if not more so. Vargr seems like it was really leaning into R-Rated graphic violence simply because it could while the films can not.

When I think about Bond I think about class and sophistication, Vargr is devoid of these things. I found it very off putting. It was not enjoyable.

I’m going to assume the other Dynamite stories are just as graphic. If so I’ll simply skip them.

I for one liked the more ruthless Bond from the first two arcs, which seems so long ago now. But even if they’re not to your liking it would be a shame to cut the cord so early. Particularly if you’re a fan of the Moore/Brosnan Bond. Hammerhead and Black Box resemble that style more strongly.

I’ll keep a look out for those next time I’m at a comic book store.

The adaptations they did of the first two novels were excellent but I agree that the Vargr thing went a bit too far into Jurassic Park territory; whilst they could show all the violence, they never stopped to consider whether they should. (I appreciate this may not be the case for every artist and writer involved)

I still have curiosity with Dynamite’s original storylines, but the Fleming adaptions remain at the top of my personal priority list and I’m hoping there’s movement on them sooner rather than later. Moonraker in a similar style of the first two would be equally excellent, and while I’m ambivalent about Diamonds Are Forever, I’m sure life would be breathed into it via the different perspective a comic provides.

I’m liking the new arc, and think it would be the basis for a solid movie. Especially with the material around Bond’s predecessor as 007, and the female agent and her past playing a prominent role. On the whole, I have to hand it to Dynamite and their strike rate with the comics. I’ve enjoyed more of their work than not, and I’m hoping when the time comes the licence is renewed.

New Bond storyline: It is called 007: For King and Country. April 2023. Fingers crossed for Moonraker graphic novel this year!

I like the title and proposed it for a future Bond film. I’m hopeful the arcs keep coming this year and beyond, because the comics have been a big source of my enjoyment with the character. I don’t have the collected hardcovers but rather the individual trades. And I agree about Moonraker - fingers crossed we hear something about that sooner rather than later.

I noticed that synopsis at one point gives away a spoiler for the current run…

Summary

Having just finished OO7, that synopsis is definitely a spoiler - that synopsis is the very end of the story, but that aside, I’m loving the more relaxed, almost Le Carre-like, pacing this run has following the last 2 having a more breakneck speed to them.

Is it me, or does the first cover have a Casino Royale vibe, with the Vesper and the card suits ?
