I have listened to the Lala NSNA cd.
I could say that now it is completely remastered by Lala that I love the score, but that wouldn’t be the truth. I can say it sounds better than ever, but… that makes it for me not a great score.
Ofcourse it is not all super bad, I like the tango, the calypso, the cruise missiles music and the music when Bond and Domino escape on the horse, but that is pretty much it and that is not a lot for over an hour music.
The title song is ok, but not great or a real classic, especially when you compare it with Shirley Bassey’s GF or DAF. I find it more like an earworm song, a melody, that gets stuck in your head but that you don’t particularly care for.
It is nice to have, but I will not listen to it very much in the future I am afraid.
You may already know this; there is a Nic Raine (former John Barry orchestrator) conducted re-recording, “Bond Back In Action” volume one, which has a very good & near perfect Dr No Suite which features the missing Dr No cues you mentioned. It’s also available on his later expanded editions, “James Bond Collection” and “The Ultimate James Bond Collection;” both are 4 CD sets.
I do hope LLL does a re-issue of From Russia With Love similar to its 60th Goldfinger with a remastered resequenced edition. Take care.
Back in the late 1980s, using two VCRs, I re-edited & redubbed NSNA substituting John Barry Bond cues.
My local Bond friends enjoyed it, and it was fun to do. I’ve also seen on YT, someone replace Eric Serra’s GE score with Barry’s score from The Specialist; not quite perfect but more interesting.
I also received my copy of LLL NSNA on August 7th. As many have commented, it’s also my least favorite of the Bond scores, but a pleasant listen while doing household chores; I especially like the versions of “Une Chanson D’Amour.” I already had the Japanese vinyl LP, the Silva 1995 CD, and two copies of the Lani Hall 45 with the movie tie-in covers.
Hopefully, this Fall we’ll see the releases of AVATK, GE and maybe CR06.
It’s not a LLL site exclusive and also not an official James Bond film. The 007 Store doesn’t sell anything related to NSNA, as it was made outside the auspices of Eon. The album can be found at other music retailers though like Screen Archives and The Movie Music Store.
How does this work? Does anyone know?
I assume that they first try to get approval before they put all energy and money into it and are going to remaster and work on a score, put it on discs and have them ready for release and then… the don’t have approval to release it? This sounds not very practical.
I hope it is FYEO for a 45 anniversary, like DAF’s 55 anniversary. And then it’s almost 2027 and… hopefully we get TSW..fill in the blanc. Eyes Only was always a difficult one, it wasn’t released with the first cd versions in the eighties untill we got the Ryko one with the bonus tracks around 2000 which was replicated for the 2003 releases.
I would assume “approval” means the licensor is reviewing the final packaging/liner notes/artwork/recording as a last step. I see the same note on toys all the time – “pending licensor approval” – when the product looks about 99.9% ready to deliver to stores. Undoubtedly there are multiple sign-offs throughout the development and production processes.
AFAIK, the music on the published soundtrack is a re-recording because the original musicians would have to get an extra fee, and re-recording it with a cheaper orchestra for the soundtrack records turned out to be cheaper.
And as LaLa-Land will certainly want to give us the original soundtrack, there might be some things to re-negotiate. Having to do this with some band is already difficult enough, but we’re talking about a whole orchestra here…
I hope so, it would be fantastic to have this one before Christmas, but I am not sure. It would be more logic to release this one next year with a “7” in the year, it is than exactly 50 years ago that this movie was released.
FYEO is my bet. Do I realy need another version? No, I like the Ryko version a lot and it already has most of the music on it. And we still don’t got a expanded version of AVTAK, which is also very needed.
The marketing angle to use 7 is something that gets massively overrated, though.
Yes, one can put the 00 in front of it. But audiences or buyers simply do not care. They just need to know when and where.
As for LLL‘s releases: it’s really down to legal departments not prioritizing a small soundtrack label. So when LLL finally gets the approval they will look at their own finances and then decide when they should release something to maximize the impact - as every company does.
And since Bond is a great seller for them they will want to spread out the releases so they can cover their costs for this year and for the next two years at least since they already have many Bonds out and the most sought after ones are becoming sparse.
I hope they will offer one or at best two for their Black Friday event - but it could also happen to see Bond releases pushed into next year (which just happens to have a 7).
I really do think if any of the Bond expanded soundtrack scores are approved, LLLR will immediately release them, why would they hold them back as it’s important for their cash flow, even if 3 or 4 CDs were approved together, they are great sellers & look at Intrada they have just released Battlestar Galatica Box set & that is selling really well for $ 130.
I having been putting away a monthly amount to cover these Bond Expanded scores as they are so good & I want them all as they are amazing & they are archiving & preserving these scores which is so important for such a massive franchise.
So if LLLR want to release 3 or 4 Bond expanded scores at once , I say bring it on, as this may never happen again.
If you offer product which is in demand you never flood the market with it because people don’t tend to throw a lot of money at many options, they rather spend less money on a preferred option - and do it again and again.
Oh! I didn’t even mean the “7” of 007, I just ment because of the movie release date was '77 and it is next year '27 so that means an 50 year anniversary.
I am not sure what their strategy is, because it doesn’t seem very strategic to me to release, say, NSNA or SP first, when titles like TSWLM and AVTAK are in much higher demand.
