Just got back, what an absolute blast to see this with an audience on the big screen. I’ve never been to a Bond movie with so many laughs. This thing killed, and consistently, with the good sized crowd I saw it with. It was especially nice to see a proper Q scene in theaters, which also drew a wonderful response from those in attendance.
I have a new appreciation for how effortlessly Pierce slipped into this role after Dalton. I was also a bit sad seeing the incredible talent that’s no longer with us. I guess the bottom line is that I never fully respected the lightness and joy this film contains. There is no pretense or self seriousness present anywhere. A lighthearted, perfectly engineered piece of entertainment.
On a side note, there was a pretty neat pre-show before hand. In addition to showing trailers for FYEO, MR, and ‘67 CR, they played some more esoteric clips that went over well with the crowd. In addition to a couple of clips from The Simpsons, they showed trailers for the Weng Weng 003 1/2 movies (which if you’ve never seen them, are an experience in and of themselves), a John Cleese Schweppes Ginger Ale ad that got a lot of laughs, a clip of Roger Moore on The Muppets, a clip from an episode of James Bond Jr., and a truly bizarre ad from Moonraker that shows members of the cast and crew (including Rog!) drinking glasses of milk during the production, before ending with the words “Milk is Superior.”
All in all, well worth the drive. I had a great time.
