Mission: Impossible 7 & 8 (2023/2024)

I wonder whether this really is just due to the press for TOP GUN 2.

And what will they do if TG2 will shift its release to later in the year?

Maybe even Mr. Cruise needs some time off before getting back into this bone-crushing ordeal.

He’s 58 and doing two jobs on two films…the odds of him needing a breather on one of the four jobs are both high and perfectly reasonable.

I love those films. But Colbertā€˜s joke was very funny: ā€žThey are filming now Mission Impossible 7. Turns out the former missions were possible after all.ā€œ

Producing these two films back-to-back would have been a massive effort even in the best of cases. Weā€˜re far from anything remotely related to ideal shooting conditions - and on top the pandemic means whatever product they manage to squeeze out of this mess is likely to still face adverse market conditions at least initially and in certain regions. Taking a break with MI 8 seems like the most sensible step from any angle.

I would have chimed in but, Dustin and Orion have covered it.

Trailer!!!ā€˜

Fingers crossed!

I’d like a title reveal as well.

Bourne was seen as Bond’s biggest threat back in the 2000s, but that has now fizzled out. I much prefer what Cruise has done here, especially from Ghost Protocol onwards. He’s struck a near perfect balance of tension and vibrancy that makes the spy genre so appealing. Given the quality of films so far, I have strong reason to suspect the next two will be the same. The series is only getting better.

I completely agree. I never thought the MI films could be anything other than an interesting time filler between Bond films until Ghost Protocol; now they are legitimate contenders for the spy movie crown that Bond has owned for decades.

To be honest, during the Craig era I’ve found that the MI films have the sense of adventure and wonder that the Bond films used to have and have lost. In my opinion if we compare the films since 2006, with the exception of Casino Royale v MI3, the MI films have been better big screen events. I’ve found that the Bond films have become too pretentious and self revering under Craig. Meanwhile the MI films are hugely enjoyable, and frankly have stronger plots, action, suspense and stunts.
It also helps that MI has a leading man who obviously loves the franchise and what he does. His enthusiasm is infectious. Compare that with the general attitude of Craig during his run…

I’m kinda finding it the opposite, as whilst I have enjoyed the McQuarrie run as I’ve watched them, I have forgotten most of what happens in them by about a week later, which is something I’d never accuse the Bond films of.

Aren’t they all about shadow agencies in search of a MacGuffin so a government agent needs to go rogue in order to be faster? And the M:I films are about that, too.

Yes, and the MI films are about that too…

I mostly meant the villain plot. Never remember them. Though given the only MI plot I do remember is MI2 (which was possibly the biggest waste of a cast in history) it may be for the best.

EDIT: I should add, as reading back it seemed like I was being harsh, I’m not criticising McQuarrie’s writing - he clearly was the best of the directors to get what Cruise was going for - an experience with an ever changing style - and has perfectly crafted 2 (3 if you count his uncredited rewrites on Ghost Protocol) to make sure the films gave you exactly that. The McQuarrie era MI movies may have many cosmetic similarities with the Craig era Bond, but at their heart are looking to be very different things.

I’ve enjoyed the MI films a great deal but my emotional connection to Bond is greater, and that’s not changing. I’m happy to be in a place where I don’t view Cruise’s films as competition to disparage. That may have not been as true in the Bourne days.

Moved to May 2022. M:I8 goes to 2023.

Bummer.

Not surprising. We’re probably getting into that timeframe now when we’re going to see some more postponements announced. Very much expecting to hear that Bond is being moved to February or March sometime over the summer months.

Half us would be retired by the time Bond 26 releases

Tom Cruise, Miles Teller and Jennifer Connolly were supposed to have been on Friday night’s Graham Norton (UK chat) Show last night.

Everything in the schedule got bumped because of Prince Phillip coverage. I am guessing the show got recorded on Thursday night so I wonder if now, it will be televised…?

Hmm, wasn“t the production date of M:I 8 pushed because Cruise was tied up with PR for TG2?

Longer vacation now - or earlier production start with pause for TG2-PR?
