Movies: Presumably 2024, maybe Beyond

Probably the only movie that really needs a sequel.

But no mention of “11 James Bond movies and the end thereof” in the announcement teaser’s crawl… tsk…

And still, I laughed so many times.

It is definitely much more crass than the original, but this is the time we are living in. And it still works on the same principle: Drebin ignorant of the consequences of his impulse driven actions, taking expressions literally and making double entendres without noticing.

All this combined with a sendup of the Liam Neeson action persona - yup, very funny.

A slight improvement over that awful teaser trailer. But, it still looks dreadful.

It’s very Seth MacFarlane.

That Spirit Halloween gag was pretty good.

So, from Schindler’s List to an endless string of forgettable action movies to a remake of a geriatric’s parody of action movies. I guess this makes it official, the next step in Neeson’s career will be commercials for reverse mortgages and walk-in bathtubs.

And these days this might be too low…

I think it’s appalling how these days there’s simply no room any more for films to have legs and/or an increasing box office because good word-of-mouth. Another nail in the theatre coffin if cinemas are nothing but opening weekend venues with a bit of tacked on business afterwards.

I booked my tickets for F1 in IMAX on Saturday last week. I know the film isn’t out until next week but for a 2:55pm showing on Saturday opening weekend, I was the only person to have bought tickets so far. Wild stuff.

This is real. A trend has set in and it’s going to be hard to reverse. I think it’s a combination of different things. The world has sped up and people have shorter attention spans. After a week something is old and it feels like it happened a year ago.

Movies have become like TV shows especially with the MCU model of franchise expansion. By now audiences have seen it all before and feel over it. Movies are no longer the special event they used to be and no longer stand alone as our sole source of entertainment.

Between declining movie quality, convenience and piracy, people have learned to live without the cinema. If they don’t like a show on a streaming service it can be clicked away from immediately with the next option ready to go.

The movie stars lack the appeal of yesteryear and I think an important observation is that audiences reflect a divided culture with boycotts and the like.

How Amazon Bond fares in this modern environment is anyone’s guess. But times have changed even since NTTD was released during Covid. I suspect a sustained absence of the character will help for their first film, but they’ll need to lay solid groundwork to make it a sustainable era that has audience support beyond an opening weekend.
