Movies: Presumably 2026, maybe Beyond

Pegg is trying, at least.

But it is absurd that Paramount could not get more of their crown IP made.

Incompetence fueled by the unrealistic desire to reach Star Wars box office when Star Wars cannot reach those grosses either.

I can’t keep up any more. The new Paramount boss is “a big Star Trek fan” but “Strange New Worlds” is “cancelled in advanced” with a season and a half yet to air; there’s a new “Starfleet Academy” series on the way that’s already been pro-actively “cancelled” with two seasons still in production, not a single episode having aired; various SNW figures from behind and in front of the camera are strongly hinting that a TOS remake series may be in the works even though it’d be mostly made up of characters and sets from the cancelled SNW, and about twice a year we get some vague promise of another Kelvin universe entry, which always comes to naught. So is Paramount pro-Trek or anti-Trek? It’s like the Schrodinger’s Cat of IPs.

The new owners won‘t care more than the old ones.

And they don’t even care about the movie business either. This „content“ is just a bother to make money.

Unnecessary prequel no. 1000000000.

The story began when the traumatized vet returned home and got mistreated.

Why show his ordeal in Vietnam in a whole film?

The curse of IP.

Pffff!
Don’t hope they also come up with the idea of a Rocky prequel:
when Rocky was a teenager he already wanted to win a boxing tournament and ofcourse he will win, not that this match with the original movie, but who cares, the young kids of today didn’t see that one anyway! And that Zag Efron guy will be perfect in the lead! Let the big bucks flow in… or not!

Actually, I might be interested in seeing a faithful, sort-ish, adaptation of the original novel again. The premise was so bonkers - tricking a real-life international terrorist into a duel with a fictional one the CIA set up for just this purpose - that it would fit splendidly into our landscape.

But the far more interesting option to me would have been a really high profile quality adaptation of the XIII comics. I’m still amazed how that series hasn’t been flogged with copyright lawsuits during the 80s; the first four or five books are such a ripoff they look like storyboards for the first two Bourne films.

Here the box-in-a-box-in-a-box mystery would lend itself to the demands of the streaming services. And with one finished storyline over 18/19 tomes and 23 years (plus a second running storyline over 18 years and another 10 chapters so far) there’d be enough material for a long run of seasons and spinoffs.

I loved that comic, reading it in the 80’s in a Dutch comic magazine, I think it was called “Eppo”.

Brosnan is the standout here…

Great cast, particularly Amy Adams!

in the comment section Pops Horpern writes about the differences between the original and 2049…perfect breakdown

The new Shane Black - and the titles were designed by Daniel Kleinman!

Having „Jaws“ beat new movies at the box office is clearly a hint, dear studios…
