Movies: Presumably 2026, maybe Beyond

Box office results, however, do not determine the quality of a movie. There were interesting, if not great movies to choose, only the mass audience did not.

The flip side would be that, at least for this month, the masses turned away from the usual crap that gets wide releases and, normally, does well at the box office.

The supposed “interesting” and “great” movies are not the ones that are going to get huge returns from the general audiences. With it costing as much as it does to go to the movies these days, and for all of the aggravation you put yourself through by going out to watch a movie with your fellow members of the public, it’s just not worth the financial and time investment to take a chance on something that looks interesting, especially when that movie will be on a streaming platform in just a couple of months time for a lot less financial and time investment.

The lead is somewhat buried in the article, but the Oscar winner the headline refers to is none other than Benicio del Toro.

Always good to see a former Bond girl doing well.

It seems it will ignore Tomb of the dragon emperor, which is fair enough. The only good thing in that film that wasn’t inherited was Michelle Yeoh.

This has two things going for it. The first, and most significant, is Mike Flanagan’s involvement. The second, no matter what this film ends up being, it can’t, it just can’t, possibly be worse than Exorcist: Believer.

Although, I feel that Scarlett Johansson is arguably one of the most overexposed actresses right now. This is proof. I think she even beats Pedro Pascal at this point.

She may be, but I’m going to give Flanagan the benefit of the doubt. His track record has afforded him that, I think. What he was able to do with Doctor Sleep, making both a great adaptation of King’s novel, which is a sequel to his version of The Shining, while also seamlessly making the film a sequel to Kubrick’s film adaptation was just brilliant and shows that he can navigate these kind of projects that might prove a bit trickier for other filmmakers.

Long story short, if Flanagan wants Scarlett Johansson, then I’m on board. I’m sure that there’s a reason that he wants her for the film. And, until Flanagan gives me a reason to doubt what he’s doing, then I’m on board for whatever it is he decides to do with The Exorcist. I mean, he quite literally can’t do worse than the last one, which very well might be one of the worst films I’ve ever seen.

Fully agreed - Flanagan is a major talent and great filmmaker. His approach to THE EXORCIST will be special.

And of course, these days you need a major star to open around the world. It is no guarantee for success, but a guarantee for getting pre-sales and awareness.

Ellen Burstyn was a well-known theatre and tv actress, then earning an Oscar nomination for THE LAST PICTURE SHOW before she did THE EXORCIST.

Johannson was well-known before Marvel exposed her to world wide fame, and after the (in my opinion terrible) hugely successful JP-sequel this year she comes with the best possible box office pedigree.
