The original holds a special place in my heart, despite being quite soapy and at times absurd (a suicide attempt by freezing in your apartment due to open windows?).

Damage control. What is he supposed to say?
„We thought this would be a huge hit and bring in teenage girls. Instead it was riddled with problems during production already, and changing the composer - something which always is suggested though never helps“ - was only one last method to make it more appealing. So we‘re devestated, and especially with Warner being swallowed by the Ellison empire we‘re very worried, looking with severe terror at the months ahead when we will get tons of notes for the post production of the Superman sequel. And don’t get me started on „Clayface“ which only has the advantage of a small budget. Gee, we should have known that this expanded universe building is a thing of the past and that Marvel has cornered the market forever and even they are struggling and only succeeding with Spider-Man and The Avengers.“
Oh, if they could only say the truth for once. Wouldn‘t that be refreshing?
Instead, doubling down with lies, even if the pool is not reflecting anymore.

Hopefully they’ll be changing the direction yet again with DC within the next year.
The “cinematic universe” business is over as a means of drawing in massive amounts of money. DC needs to wipe the slate completely clean and just go back to making good films with their most popular characters and stop worrying about having a connected universe.

Will be interesting to see how the box office shakes out next weekend. A film from Pixar’s most storied franchise, an extended re-release of the surprise hit horror film of the year, a film on the cusp of becoming a massive flop for the studio but still is a part of a well known franchise, and the millionth edition in the Minions saga.

I’ll be seeing Supergirl later this week. I finished the original graphic novel that the movie is based on. I couldn’t get into it, which doesn’t give me a lot of confidence for the movie. As I’ve said before, I feel like cinematic Superman hasn’t had the right people in charge, more often than not. It’s like WB hasn’t learned anything by going back to the old movies, instead of the comics. Superman and his universe is the one movie world where I feel like I could be making it better. It just feels like Superman could be flying in different better directions, than the one that we’ve been on, since Richard Donner’s firing.
Also, happy 20th anniversary to Superman Returns. Two great scenes.
So, Superman Returns wasn’t a complete miss. Although, it feels like Metallo should have been the villain considering Lex’s real estate scheme.

That said… I love Milly Alcock as Supergirl. On the one hand, I find it an original, somewhat unconventional choice, yet on the other, she really looks the part. Perhaps she just deserved a better movie…

As much as this franchise doesn’t need a continuation, I have to admit that this has me somewhat interested now. Bradley Cooper starring and directing, Margot Robbie and Monica Barbaro starring alongside him, I have to admit I’ll be interested to see what they do with this one.

I’m sure I’ve said this before, but…
I love a good heist caper, and I’m always happy to see films of that genre. A 60’s set heist caper with that cast sounds cool. But does Ocean’s really need to be the only game in town? I know branding is important, but how much clout does the Ocean’s name really carry at this point? Robbie and Cooper should be bigger draws than a decades-old franchise that has precisely one entry that people love.

I have actually yet to see one of the OCEAN’S films, never got around to it. I have, however, watched that original with Sinatra - but even about that I remember next to nothing.

Even without knowing about the behind the scenes issues, the film not making back its money at the box office was still not at all surprising. Supergirl has never been one of the DC characters that brings in a huge audience in the way that Batman, Wonder Woman, and others are. To make two of the first three entries in the rebooted DC universe (Clayface being the other) focus on characters that are not as familiar with the general public seems like a recipe for the result that has occurred thus far.
Following up Superman with new takes on Batman and Wonder Woman would have been better bets to help set up the new DC universe for more sustained success in the long run. First, they’re more established characters with a larger base that will make it more likely to be financially successful. Two, an extended DC Universe needs these characters anyway, so bringing them in to immediately follow up Superman helps to set a more stable foundation for future entries to possibly focus on lesser known characters with an opportunity for those films to be successful.
On another note, seems as though other known properties are under-performing a bit at the box office:

But are people also not tired of every couple of years new takes of the same characters?
I think the Supergirl movie is just not good enough, the character and actress who’s playing it are not the problem here. I also think the Superman movie from last year had the same problems, maybe Gunn is losing his magic touch already, even his Suicide Squad movie was a little dissapointment although still fun enough to entertain.

Maybe the general idea was to recreate the success Gunn had with his Guardians of the Galaxy? That series was, at best, a niche spinoff of an even more niche character hardly anybody outside the 70s/80s comic scene had even heard of. And yet, Gunn managed to turn it into an unofficial Star Wars remake with Quinn and Rocket each sharing the Solo part (and minus the Jedi philosophy obviously). I haven’t watched SUPERGIRL - I felt unaimed at - but from the trailer I get some of the same vibes and the ‘story’ also seems largely set in some fantasy-DC outer space.
