I really agree…
… except that it’s not just the ending that is the issue: I would go as far as saying that all of NTTD is a bad decision. It’s just a lazy and pretentious recycling of past glories (cars, characters like Dr No, soundtracks,…). It poses as both homage and bold where it’s really a glorified copy/paste stint.
And of course, the ending is ludicrous. It’s just Craig going for the Oscar he thought he deserved.
So, here’s hoping they will indeed go the Moonraker route (although I really like MR, up until the space part) and realise they went too far in the egocentric delirium of their actor who thought he was bigger than the role.
That is indeed the question. Given that they made the decision they did, my guess is that they will listen to you. More likely they are listening to none of us. They are keeping their own counsel. For better or for worse.
A lot is made about FYEO ‘correcting course’, as it were, after MR. Ignoring the fact FYEO isn’t a pure hard boiled thriller, the down to Earth concept didn’t last very long. The following two films, OP and AVTAK, reverted to the colourful spectacle we had become accustomed to. Arguably MR did go one step too far with its finale, but that perceived damage wasn’t substantial enough to continue with the FYEO approach. Because that only served to neuter Moore’s strengths.
