Mallory does say this to Moriarty…C…in Spectre

Being a Bond fan does not obligate us to support every decision Eon makes. In fact, quite the reverse. Part of being a fan is being able to tell the powers that be, don’t serve me a poo sandwich and tell me it’s peanut butter and jelly. Part of being a fan is demanding better when the product begins to weaken.

The ending to NTTD was a parody. It’s the ending you would write if you hated the franchise. Bond is trapped, poisoned, shot, and blown up by British cruse missiles with a pink bunny in his pocket. I mean just say that out loud to yourself. I mean it would be funny if it wasn’t so ridiculous.

When Moonraker came out Eon realized they had jumped the shark and needed to make an adjustment. They did and we got the very good FYEO. We find ourselves there again. It happens, these things are cyclical I guess. Eon just needs to realize they put out a poo sandwich and not do it again.

No. I was responding to a comment about the Craig era, that he had a 100% success rate.

Yes, this is true and should remain so. However, he needs some wins, some enjoyment. Craig had very few/little of either.

We need less funny than Moore, less outlandish than Brosnan, far less misery than Craig. Time to circle back to a more Sean approach to the character. He had the proper balance.

I can’t see any point to your criticism, only subjective disappointment.

This your opinion which, though I profoundly disagree with it, you are entitled to both hold and share. However, please do not dress this up as fact. The reviews and receipts show many, many people loved Craig Bond and NTTD. Bond has been around for so long and in so many iterations that no one version is the correct one: they are just different and appreciated by different people… and that’s ok.

I love the ending of NTTD, and I consider myself a huge fan of the franchise for 25 years. To each their own, I guess.

I also love The Last Jedi, but I digress.

I don’t believe the other criticisms I’ve seen of the film hold enough weight to pull it down to the bottom depths of a tiered ranking. Thus I suspect the majority of the ill feeling boils down to this:

NTTD currently holds an 83% critical and 88% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes. It also made $774 million after cinemas had been closed for over a year, with many people not wanting to enter one in the first place. I’d call that respectable showing for a ‘poo sandwich’.

Another thought: if Craig was never Bond in the eyes of his detractors, their strong emotional reaction to his death is something to ponder.

Indeed. Bond never gets to kill Le Chiffre in Casino Royale, book or film, and that’s the point. Bond’s career could have been over before it started (either via death or retirement with Vesper), while also being given a lesson about the nature of evil. As for Greene’s demise, that was cruelty beyond words. Walking through the desert and finally doing the unthinkable out of sheer desperation - drinking motor oil. When the bullets hit him it would’ve been a blessed relief.

How exceptionally elegant.

Round these parts, it’s known as a crock monsieur.

Just finished rewatching the whole Bond saga in chronological order. So obviously I’ve just rewatched NTTD. Boy, am I glad Craig’s run is now over!

I still don’t see anything Bondian in NTTD expect for the few forced formulaic bits (tuxedo and past cars). I won’t delve again on the end (which still doesn’t make any sense even after several viewings), but one of my main issues is that it’s really way too pretentious. It’s heavy, boring at times and really trying too much to impress by its delirium of greatness. Quite hard to watch, really…

It’s too bad, because CR and QoS were very solid and enjoyable. But then it went downhill from SF: self-absorption, gratuitous darkness, and an overall suicidal tendency. Not fun watching.

Oh well, on to the next one now! Can’t wait for a new chapter to erase the one we’ve just suffered…

I suppose the point would be to offer a different perspective. We don’t have to agree.

I don’t think I dressed it up as fact, rather a strongly held point of view.

And you’re right, it is a testament to the greatness of the franchise that they can put out a genuine stinker and it still does well. People love Bond, and, yes, that’s a good thing.

Let’s be clear. My opinion of the ending of NTTD has nothing to do with my opinion of Craig as Bond. I loved him in CR, QoS, SF, and most of NTTD. The direction the series ended up taking is a different issue.

Many perspectives are welcome here.

But it would help your argument not to use derogatory terms like „poop sandwich“.

There. I fixed it.

I’ve been a Bond fan since I was 5, nearly 30 years now. I liked NTTD. I accept and like how they handled the ending.

You, a fan, think they made a bad decision. I, a fan, think they didn’t. Who should Eon listen to?

Yes, you said. Has it occurred to you that people actually liked all of NTTD and your opinion is neither gospel or a fact?

You sadly did not.

And yet I’ll say that MR is one of the great films of the 20th century while FYEO is forgettable, melodramatic drivel.
