But that clip doesn’t say or show that Ash told SPECTRE that Bond was coming to the party. It just shows Obruchev looking to Ash for help from Bond’s aggressive questioning.
He’s basically saying without words, “Help me out here man. I’ve done what you wanted. Get this bullying man away from me.”
It makes no other sense. Ash told Spectre about Bond coming to the party because only he and Felix knew he would. At the same time Bond worked for Safin by bringing in Obruchev. Spectre may have thought Ash was ‘theirs’ - in fact he was Safin’s guy all along. With Safin using the classical Spectre tactics to play two sides against one another, letting Spectre ‘steal’ Obruchev, then Bond steal him again from Spectre and deliver to Ash.
But as I pointed out above, Primo was standing right by Bond, Felix, and Ash in the Jamaica club when they were trying to recruit Bond to go to the Spectre gathering in Cuba. That’s more than enough to make it possible that Spectre could have learned Bond’s plans without Ash’s help.
And Primo was obviously surveilling him closely enough to know to look for Bond’s toothbrush in the jungle and not his bathroom…
You know how we’ve all learned that sometimes just have to accept that Bond fans like different things or see things differently?
I’m sorry Orion I just don’t think Ash was Spectre. I think it’s absolutely possible, but at this point I don’t agree with that.
Saying Spectre knew about Bond’s plans because we clearly saw a Spectre agent in the room when the plans were being discussed is not remotely a stretch, especially when you add on to that them being in possession of his toothbrush shows they were clearly at his home as well.
Then again, the meeting at the bar wraps up with Bond turning down the job. If Primo watches them that closely he only learns Bond isn’t interested. That was the state of the affair when Bond left the bar.
He only changes his mind after meeting the new 007 and being told not to interfere. Then he talks to M and changes his mind, calling Felix that he will take on the assignment. Only now can Spectre be sure to welcome him as surprise guest.
I’m not saying he learned of Bond’s plans at the bar, I’m saying that between both Primo being at the bar and establishing he was also at Bond’s house, he clearly was watching him closely enough that he absolutely could have found out Bond’s plans on his own and without Ash’s help.
To summarize what I’m trying to say - it is absolutely possible that they learned about it from Ash because Ash is a Spectre agent, but it is not the only possibility.
It is still possible that Ash is not a Spectre agent and they learned about it solely from Primo and his surveillance of Bond before, during, and after the bar.
Here is one other point for discussion - Primo had to have known about Bond’s plans while they were all still in Jamaica because why else would he have stolen the toothbrush? But he had to have learned about those plans independently of Ash, because he and Ash hadn’t met yet…
Good question - though from Spectre’s/Blofeld’s perspective it’s probably not the most important point to have Bond at the party; that’s just icing on Blofeld’s birthday cake. With Heracles you could even make this a kind of experiment: how long till it reaches Bond through however many persons? Would give a good idea for targeting other persons of interest.
I’ve just started re-watching Craig’s run (my much better half bought me the cult classics steel book of Casino Royale) and I’m finding that Eon was actually way more consistent across the films than they’re given credit for and actually more consistent than, the holy grail, MCU is.
As it was quintessential for Safin’s plan to work, he surely would have found a way to let Spectre know that Bond is coming, no matter if Ash was a double or triple, or if Primo overheard the conversation or not. And more interestingly, in the bar, it actually looks to both Ash and and Primo that Bond won’t be going. So, it’s rather unlikely that Spectre heard the news from one of the two, Bond’s decision was made after the phone call with M. The only other person to know about was Nomi.
Which raises the question, if she probably is the first double agent who made it through an entire Bond movie without being uncovered.
I suspect these inconsistencies we’re discussing here result from various iterations the script went through. Maybe there was a version without Primo or Ash? Maybe one was a double agent and that switched to the other? Or they had a double and a triple agent and decided to cut it back as not to confuse the audience.
Fact is, during the film it works sufficiently enough to let us follow events. THE BIG SLEEP had a murder not even Chandler could explain - and nobody much cared.
