NTTD – The Nitpickery

Well, if you consider carbon footprint a poison, the DAD rainforest igloo wins, I guess

But why would Logan Ash steal Bond’s toothbrush? He was working for Safin not SPECTRE. He had no reason to kill Bond at that point. It was SPECTRE who wanted the toothbrush to get Bond’s DNA to kill him. Later, Obruchev switched Bond’s DNA sample, which Primo/Cyclops gave him, for the sample of SPECTRE’s members which was obviously on Safin’s directive. Then when Heracles is unleashed on those same SPECTRE members, there’s a shot showing Primo/Cyclops clearly surprised and scared and he understandably hightails it out of the building because he doesn’t know if he might die too whether from the virus or another surviving SPECTRE member who could suspect him of being a traitor.

Ash had to have met Primo/Cyclops a day or two after the party when he recruited him. And Primo/Cyclops had to have taken Bond’s toothbrush. Nothing else makes sense. If Primo/Cyclops had switched to Safin’s side before the party, then there would be no need for Obruchev’s subterfuge in switching the DNA samples. He would have just inserted the SPECTRE sample right in front of Primo/Cyclops as they were now both on the same side.

But then there’s the little matter of how did SPECTRE know that Bond was going to sneak into their party so they could kill him? There’s a disconnect there in the script.

Ash was Spectre. It was him who told Spectre, hence Gorbachev being able to accidentally give him up, Ash had to tell him that he was also with Safin.

As I was typing my edit, (and while you was responding), I realized that had to have been the case–that he was working three sides. But the film doesn’t say or show that. It only shows him working two sides. It’s only by logical deduction and process of elimination that one can come to that (three-sided) conclusion and even then it’s a little messy.

No Ash wasn’t Spectre. Obruchev certainly knew that Ash is on his side. When he’s cornered by Bond and Felix, he looks at Ash: “You’re my man, help me out here…” And it should be even more clear after he shot Felix and threw bond down the hatch. “I’m with Safin” – he’s not saying that to Obruchev. He’s telling that to the audience (so even the dumbest idiot gets it).

The actions in the film say otherwise. The ones who had been at Bond’s house were Felix and Ash, as shown by the cigar, then the reveal that Ash is a bad guy has;

“Blofeld? How did he know I was going to be there?”

And Gorbachev looks straight at Ash.

This comedy edit has the moment in question.

But Primo was also in Jamaica at the time. And Bond uses the toothbrush after Felix and Ash were there…

I thought Bond’s DNA was stolen through the MI6 database. When Bond and Moneypenny visit Q, doesn’t Moneypenny mention that DNA databases worldwide have been hacked, and then Bond asks, “Does that include ours?” To which Moneypenny replies something like, “No reason to think not.”

Still, they needed the toothbrush.

Maybe that was a ‘fan thing’ of Ash?

Yep, he strikes one as a collector of such items.

Interesting, I never even considered that before. I assumed Bond’s DNA was acquired through the leaked MI6 database (with DNA samples stored for each agent).

Please remind me where in the film the toothbrush ends up missing. Don’t recall this scene.

I don’t think we were ever shown that. The assumption is that, because Leiter and, we assume, Ash were in Bond’s home, Ash stole the toothbrush (or took a DNA sample from it). It’s reaching … but that could be why we were given Bond’s outdoor shower scene, with him giving his teeth a scrub as he emerges to towel off.

Okay, fair enough. The next time I watch I’ll pay more attention to that scene.

Aaaaand how would he be giving his teeth a scrub with said toothbrush if Ash had stolen it? Primo stealing it after the shower scene makes sense, but not Ash.

Also, isn’t it Madeline’s DNA they need? Bond’s DNA would connect Heracles to Mathilde, but not Madeline. They would need Madeline’s to have Bond’s Heracles “infection” threaten both of them at the end.

True, and Safin got Madeleine’s strand of hair from her office. I’m not sure where the fixation with the toothbrush came from, other than it is one of the sources used for DNA identification. And we saw Bond use it in the shower. Often we humans make connections where they don’t belong.

Bond was doing drinking games with Felix in front of both Ash and Cyclops, I’m sure they had a wealth of samples from Bond

Safin needed Madeline’s, Blofeld needed Bond’s.

Poor Mathilde…the actions of her parents and maternal grandfather, before her parents had even met let alone had her, have her life in jeopardy from all sides

In a shock twist from a deleted scene it is revealed that the toothbrush is in fact the real Blofeld and therefore the author of all Bond’s pain.
