Yeah I was reading some articles about it after I watched the video. Why anyone would build a “family home” that big is beyond me. Would make for an interesting film location.
These guys need a brutal editor.
And a sense of perspective
Some of these ideas may be good ideas to start with.
I’d like the next film to be one that merits an exciting, upbeat title song, rather than one that makes me want to sit in a dark corner with a single tear running down my cheek. Nothing against somber songs per se, but I’d like to have some fun next time around.
I agree. It’s time for a tune that says: don’t worry, this guy will save the day and have a great time doing it.
Absolutely. The next song should be in the vein of “A View to a Kill”, “You Know My Name”, and “Live and Let Die.” It reminds me of the period from TSWLM to OP where all of the songs were more romantic easy listening ballads and then we had “A View to A Kill” coming on like a rocket. Let’s have one of those again.
If the tune is going to take that tone - I want the film to make the same change.
I’ve been reflecting a lot on the Craig era and what my little Bond-loving soul is looking for in the next slate of films. In short, I have enjoyed the DC films, but am happy they have ended and I’m looking forward to a change.
Growing up, Bond was somebody I wanted to be. Craig’s Bond was somebody I was thankful I was not. I felt my life was a hell of a lot more enjoyable than his. The man seemed miserable.
Close to Fleming, yes. Appropriate for the post September 11th world in which he debuted, yes. But life has sucked lately, and I want to have fun and want to be like Bond again.
This x 1000. Thank you.
I certainly understand the appeal to actors and writers of drama and angst and heartbreak, but for decades a key part of the Bond “mystique” has been the character’s power as an aspirational figure. That is entirely gone, now.
Frankly, the whole product placement strategy doesn’t even make sense to me any more. Why would I want to spend money to wear the same watch or sunglasses, or drive the same car, as a guy with the worst and saddest life of any man on Earth?
By this point in time, more than half of the franchise’s run (some 30+ years out of its total of 60) has been spent going in the direction that they are currently going in. At some point, one has to accept that this is what the franchise is, rather than it being a pendulum that goes back and forth between different styles every so often. The melodrama will continue. The often times absurd lengths they will go to in order to give Bond a personal stake in the mission will continue. All of these things will continue because that’s all that this current regime at EON knows. Until they actually oversee a course correction, there’s no reason to believe that one is coming.
I disagree. The franchise absolutely made hard turns again and again. One must be thankful for the ending of NTTD because the next era cannot top this personal aspect of Bond anymore.
That is actually a great observation. I also never really got the feeling from CraigBond that he enjoyed those luxury items. Connery, Lazenby, Moore and Brosnan damn sure did.
Since the end of Dalton’s tenure? It really hasn’t.
In terms of time, about half of the franchise’s sixty years has happened under Barbara’s watch. The films have leaned hard into the personal vendetta angle and the various other things that we all talk about being tired of seeing.
The franchise made course corrections several times when Cubby was running the show. We had differing tones for the films depending on what was popular in pop culture at the time as well as due to the sensibilities of the actor portraying Bond. That has not been the case since Cubby was no longer at the helm.
They did a HARD reboot and have changed their tone to match the tastes of the time - even when the box office was saying they were still on good ground.
Craig’s Bond had an innate passion for being a stripped back retroist who preferred the old ways. He’s a man who used a cut throat razor instead of an electric shaver because he valued traditional skills. He loved the classic DB5 possibly more than any other Bond and wanted it restored after every mishap. He wasn’t living an entirely happy life, but this still allowed him to be presented as a loner despite being monitored by MI6 nearly every step of the way. It made any quips appear even more like the defensive mask they are. I’ll remain a champion of his portrayal, but indeed, it’s time for something else now. I’d be interested in a film along the lines of Tomorrow Never Dies.
I agree - I loved Craig’s run, but the next Bond needs to be different, Rege-Jean Page driving the charm train of Moore and Brosnan for example.
I agree with your assessment - but I still never got from CraigBond that he was truly enjoying those things. Not even a meal. When he eats caviar in CR he is famished rather than appreciative.
Which is perfectly fine, of course, with CraigBond being the Bond he is.
But I hope for more laid back fun in the future. We all could benefit from that.
Agreed, that’s one of the things I really liked in the books, he’s appreciative of his lifestyle. He enjoys his eggs, wines and clothes. He complained about the things that he didn’t liked that make him more of a sophisticated guy, he’s more reactive to things and picky when it comes to his lifestyle, he hates Tea, he complains because he cared more for his lifestyle than any other things.
For him, his food, his living, are the most important to him.
He enjoys his life because he didn’t know when will his life going to last.
He’s contemplative of things.
I’d like to see Bond’s housekeeper May. I want to see Bond eat some scramble eggs. Let’s see him be a bit of a snob when it comes to food, drink, and clothing. Some humor can be derived from May wondering how Bond maintains his luxury lifestyle on a government salary or she has absolutely no clue what he does for a living. There’s some fun to be had there with visiting Bond’s off duty home life. I enjoyed the glimpse we got in DN and LALD and would like to see more of that.
