Reboot? Remake? Retro? Which direction should the series take next?

A key recent collaborator who probably won’t be coming back. I trust him with Batman and Robin.

I am glad he is busy, not with Bond,

A big name could be leaving EON for good.
An interesting interview. In this interview from MotorTrend with Oscar-winning special effects supervisor Chris Corbould, OBE, he reveals that he is advancing his career into the director’s chair on an upcoming project. Here is the quote:
MT: What’s next for you?
CC: “I’ve put the special effects on hold for awhile now. I bought the rights to a book, I’ve just finished the script. It’s based on the true life book of two guys that get kidnapped in Colombia. Next year I should be getting back to direct that myself. That’s my plan at the moment.”

It’s not in the published interview, but he later seemed uneasy about questions about returning for Bond work (as I think he hopes he becomes a successful director going forward).

Full interview with other fun details, like him claiming he came up with the GoldenEye tank chase in place of a motorbike chase, and that he devised and then actually directed most of the final act of Skyfall at the request of Sam Mendes, and that No Time To Die 's Matera car chase was originally much more destructive and longer (plus more details about Boyle’s Bond movie).
Corbould has worked on 15 Bond movies starting with The Spy Who Loved Me .

Not really future related, but in honor of two people we should be forever grateful for as Bond fans.

Just came across this in some further CC research: Campbell and Corbould celebrated at an action movie festival by some big names:

Many big names sent in video clips to praise Campbell and Corbould, including Nolan and JJ Abrams.

"James Bond producer Barbara Broccoli said that Campbell and Corbould are “an important part of the Bond family.”

Christopher Nolan, with whom Corbould has collaborated on four films, said: “Nobody’s contribution matches yours to action cinema.” J.J. Abrams lauded Corbould as “a true hero in filmmaking. It’s been an honor to have worked with you.”"

I also previously found an interview from 2021 in which Corbould had already admitted he was likely hanging up his SFX work to do more second unit directing, he had said at the time. He did credited second unit directing work on Eon’s Rhythm Section, as well as Doctor Strange sequel, Christopher Robin with Marc Forster interestingly, and also is credited for splinter 2nd unit work for Skyfall and Spectre.

He would have been a logical candidate for Bond director in earlier times.

There must be a lack of desire within EON to progress with the series. They already have the perfect actor ready to go (Henry Cavill) and a clear desire with the box office returns of No Time To Die (which did well enough launching during a global pandemic). Even if the next film didn’t release until 2026 or 2027, Cavill would still be younger than Moore (45 going on 46) when Live and Let Die released. Though I suspect they will go with a more unknown actor if and when Bond 26 ever enters production.

Cavill is like Clive Owen - people might think he is a typical Bond candidate. But he isn’t. The chance was there but it has passed.

There is no one who could be Bond right now.

No one? Come on, now.

Until the director has been hired, no-one. Unless the casting of Bond 7 is going to break form of the other 6 (or more given Octopussy auditions for new lead) and not give the director any say, we will get director announced before Bond.

Agreed. There are plenty who could do it.

Plenty who could play him - but who could be the one who actually will be Bond for a necessary mass audience?

He would have to combine all the qualities one expects and bring new qualities one does not expect. Also, he would have to sustain this for at least a decade, and he would have to enjoy being the ambassador for these films.

And he would have to be great to work with. And cheap enough at first.

He would have to be young but old enough, be experienced but not famous yet.

He would have to be good looking enough so product placement could use him in their ads, but he is not supposed to look too handsome anymore.

And he would have to accept that these films take years of his life and career. At this point he would even have to accept that no one knows when the next film will be made, who would direct, how high the budget is etc.

So… who would fit these criteria?

It’ll be whoever they pick. EON has yet to outright botch the casting of Bond. They won’t this time either.

But probably too well known and maybe too expensive.

Hey! I have other plans for 003.

Connery wasn’t. He worked out OK.

I would have to think that by the time they start to actually cast an actor, they’ll know the rest of these things. The new guy is obviously not going to be going into this blind. It’s not like EON’s just going to wake up completely unprepared one morning and just all of a sudden decide to cast 007 that day.

I’m thinking they’ll do a planned trilogy.
