Reboot? Remake? Retro? Which direction should the series take next?

The Amazon/MGM situation, the strikes, and the pandemic-caused release delays of the last film notwithstanding…

Could it be one more reason to kill Bond in NTTD was EON‘s desire to hit the pause button for, well, maybe a decade?

It would surely help EON’s side of things if Amazon was able to mine the franchise with sideshow content for a few years - provided Bezos’ team doesn’t insist on straying too far. A couple of game shows/pub quizzes perhaps? Maybe in a kind of European/Asian/Americas league topped off with a World Cup?

While Amazon keeps public interest alive, EON can comfortably settle back and watch them getting hungry for the real thing - until it’s time to indulge them. Amazon’s top brass is probably even glad they don’t need to invest $ 400m into a single production right at a time when few things are reasonably certain. I don’t know about five years or a decade, but it wouldn’t surprise me if it came to this eventually.

If we look at a first release date of 2019 for NTTD, with no movement in 2023/24, we’re already at the five year mark since a Bond film actually was produced.

Even if preparations and casting could start in late 2024, and the development of a script could lead to a director being attached in 2025, with the subsequent rewrites and newly brought in writers, pre-production could start in 2026, with shooting taking place in 2027, post-production in the usual scramble-panic until a release date in late 2027, we would be 8 years later - and six years due to the delay of NTTD.

But this would be very optimistic. It seems that this reality show, should it work, will have to run its course (so maybe 2-4 season) before the next movie will be put into high gear.

2029 seems to be realistic, after all.

That’s quite long, I wish some of the old surviving Bond casts like Lazenby, Shirley Eaton, and etc., Could have a chance to see it.

And 2029 would be 2 year closer to the 70th Anniversary of the Franchise as well, so maybe there’s also a possibility that the release of it would be in the 70th Anniversary (2032), that’s quite hard.

Like, if 2029 is true, maybe the thought would’ve likely to occur in the Producers that it’s been 2 years close to the anniversary, so they wouldn’t release it to the public until 2032, or at least, if the Production would be fast, Bond 26 in 2029, then Bond 27 in 2032.

Michael G Wilson could be one of those old-timers you speak of. In my unique opinions, it may be time for him to retire. Also, this isn’t as disappointing as Barbara saying that Purvis and Wade were coming up with ideas. I hope Amazon and IFP push out other Bond products, keeping Bond’s name meaning something in today’s world.

When you get older you will retract that statement.

I don’t get the sense that EON is all that sentimental about these anniversaries as the fanbase and general public are. I remember there being a lot of debate about getting a movie out in 2007 for the obvious marketing purposes, either delaying CASINO ROYALE or somehow even moving QUANTUM OF SOLACE up on an even more accelerated pace, in order to accomplish that. Thankfully, EON didn’t go with it.

Given just how few of these films EON makes anymore, most of them when they are released either have some kind of anniversary attached to them or are close enough to make it worth acknowledging, at least in the minds of some. I think they’ve gone a bit overboard in this regard. The only anniversaries I think that they should be celebrating moving forward are the 100th and, maybe (emphasis on maybe) the 75th. We don’t need to celebrate the franchise every ten years, especially now that that basically amounts two less than Marvel’s single year output.

Danjaq made James Bond and 007 trade marks. Bond, as a character can’t be touched. I don’t know how they took to individual stories, but I don’t see them being casual about them.

Bond will be fresh, Bond will be like we haven’t seen him before, played by an actor most of us probably haven’t watched yet, Bond will be a reflection of the geo-political state after the events that are happening now have played out. Time to get invested in the back catalogue, at least we will all be highly exited and relieved at the announcements that production has begun. Bond 26 has already been registered as a production so someone has started thinking somewhere at least. Reasons to be cheerful! We have had other long waits between production and we have got through them together :grinning:

THR posting basically the Guardian story:

  1. Minimum.

That’s a big part of it. They know casting Bond is a big deal and they want to get it right, knowing what they settle on truly reflects the times in which the movie is released. Honestly, Project 007’s approach has me super interested because it’s also going the reboot route, and as a gamer it will tide me over for a good while. Video games these days are essentially cinematic experiences in their own right.

Amazon buying MGM is like Disney buying Lucasfilm. They wanted a movie(s) as soon as possible to get a return on their investment. James Bond is arguably the biggest part of the deal. Amazon is going to want some type of progress in the next year or two from EON.

They can want it all they want but there’s not a whole lot they can do about it…

And they are pretty much content to have the films in their streaming library now.

Just because Amazon might want them to turn around with a film basically yesterday doesn’t mean that EON has to do so. Thankfully, they seem to be following the path that I’d hoped they would and give us a lengthy gap between NTTD and the next film in order to allow Bond’s death in that moment to have the weight that it requires. Granted, they’re probably not doing it because of that, but it’s still a byproduct of the decision to wait a while for the next film, so I’ll take it.

That said, when they do get around to actually beginning the process of making a new film (which I figure is looking more and more like 2027 or 2028 at this point, maybe longer) they need to fully commit to turning these things around on a much more consistent basis. They no longer have the weight of an unreliable financial partner dragging them down, so the product should be much more consistent in its timing.

Speaking of Amazon, new trailer for 007’s Road to a Million:

Being the sourpuss I can be I only can mention favourably that the camera work seems to be movie budget-like.

And sure, many iconic moments from the movies had to be put in to sell this concept.

But won’t this show completely dilute the legacy of the movies? It seems to plunder them. And since there won’t be a new film for many, many years, the next generation audience will grow up with… this.

When finally a new film will appear, this generation will say: oh, they turned that show into a movie now?

I feel a bit of confidence in Barbara Broccoli saying she was looking back at GE for inspiration. It seems like the right thing to do.

As for continuation novels being adapted, I feel that now would be the time to use Forever and a Day as inspiration. But that’s me, I would also give Anthony Horowitz a chance at writing a screenplay, as he seems to know the character well.

It’s a shame that EON has heavily invested in the surrogate families theme for awhile now. I feel that theme could have worked better with Charmian Bond and possibly May. However, I trust EON to do their own origin story at some point.

Amazon could definitely help in the budget department. Similar to Disney buying Lucasfilm, Amazon is going to want to get their money back as soon as possible. Aka Disney wants Star Wars as soon as possible, even it means repeating story beats. They already lost a million dollars on Road to a Million  they’ll want a movie, due to the for-sure money maker. So it’s a mixed bag. I’d rather IFP and Dynamite Comics handle spin-offs for the time being. We got the 2nd 00 book coming in April next year, and everyone will see how that goes. Not too mention, Kim Sherwood has most of the 3rd 00 book written. I think IFP, Dynamite, EON, MGM and Amazon will take a look at how that trilogy does before truly doing more Bond spin-offs. I do honestly hope for some for the future.
