18 years since we lost George Carlin. So much of his standup comedy became a dark reality, he is truly missed.

As the world moves onwards and - maybe, possibly, hopefully - upwards we learn that large parts of it, of our lives and times, were significantly shaped by a small number of figures. Clive Davis was one of them; far from an unknown character, his influence went further than many casual audiences may be aware.
In the future his place in the music industry will be taken by algorithm and AI…

Wow! Sometimes life and your own mind are doing strange things…
I didn’t know him as a comedian or know his name.
I only knew him from the Bill and Ted movies and although I didn’t thought about these movies for years, today while working I thought… one of the reasons the third movie from a couple of years ago didn’t work was they didn’t have that cool fun guy anymore, with his time machine/telephone booth.

That is sad news. Bonnie Tyler nearly sang a James Bond song. She was asked but turned the offer down because she didn’t like the song which was Never Say Never Again. Would have been interesting.
In honor of her, I just went on YouTube and watched Andrew Harker’s “James Bond - Holding Out For A Hero” video from 12 years ago. It’s a fitting tribute to both 007 and Tyler.

Randolph Mantooth, star of TV’s “Emergency"
This show was an early favorite, and I know I wasn’t the only little boy (and probably girl) who watched it determined to grow up and be a paramedic like Johnny and Roy. Some of them even followed up on that drive, as the show proved to be a great recruiting tool for a generation of firemen and EMTs.
As a kid, all I knew was that it was exciting, but in hindsight I can see what a brilliant solution the show was to the anti-violence crusades being waged by parents and religious groups at the time. It managed real danger and suspense but the “conflict” was against nature, situational peril and a ticking clock. Problems weren’t solved by shooting straighter, punching harder or running the other guy’s car off a cliff before he could do the same to you. These guys risked their necks to rescue victims of fires, overturned cars, crashed airplanes, deep ravines, raging floods, heart attacks, poisonings, you name it. It proved you could be a brave, rugged he-man type without having to get violent, and it put the spotlight on the real-life, everyday heroism of firefighters and EMTs (who embraced the show and the stars, making Mantooth an honorary fire chief in his later years).
This was a Jack Webb-produced show, but the performers – and especially Mantooth – were more relaxed and naturalistic on “Emergency” than anyone on Dragnet or Adam 12 ever was. He was the type of actor who never seemed to be acting, if that makes sense. It was an ensemble show, but I think it’s fair to say he was the breakout star of the whole thing.
Lots of good memories watching this show with my folks, then again decades later with my daughter. RIP.

Sad news. I always liked him in everything he did. He could have made an interesting James Bond circa 1987 if things had broken a little differently.

Only last April we heard Neill was cancer-free. This comes really unexpected, a very sad day.

Incredibly sad news.
Strangely enough, I just caught a little bit of Jurassic Park just a few hours prior to this breaking. First time I had seen any of the film in quite a while and came away impressed, as always, with his work in leading that film. It’s a film loaded with great actors, but Neill anchors it with a brilliant performance.
That film was also a huge part of my childhood, as I’m sure it was for many. The novel was my first grown-up book, which I read way before I should have and didn’t understand a lick of it beyond the basic plot points that I recognized from the film, but it was an achievement to be able to say that I’d read it at the age I did. And that was largely because I had been so mesmerized by the film which was in large part due to, obviously, the special effects but also by Dr. Alan Grant, who was, far and away, my favorite character in the film.
Again, incredibly sad news. RIP

I recently purchased the little known black comedy „Death in Brunswick“ which shows his comedic talent so entertainingly. He was so versatile.

Sam always struck me as a down to Earth, genuine guy with natural charisma. He was the heart and soul of Jurassic Park and through that film was a big part of my childhood. This one hurts. RIP.

Awful news. Neill was always a favorite.
I’m inspired to watch Hunt for the Wilderpeople again, or maybe “Dead Calm.” I’m not much of a dino fan.
