NBA legend Kobe Bryant and his daughter were killed in a helicopter crash. Some of my earliest sports memories were of watching Kobe at the beginning of his career. RIP Black Mamba and little Mamba.
I was hesitant to post about this as Kobe is an athlete and not an actor. But watching the effect this tragedy has had emphasizes that Kobe was a star, perhaps with an even broader reach than film celebrity has (though he does have an Oscar.)
I had stopped being a fan of his after the allegations back in 2003, though my mom had always stood by him. By all accounts, he became a devoted father and tried to be a better person up until his final days. And that’s when it hit me–my parents and I spent more time watching the Lakers with Kobe than just about any other activity we did together. So this tragedy hit somewhat like a family loss to me.
This tragedy, including eight other people and their families, along with the loss of Neil Peart shows that the icons of my youth are now passing as the march of time moves on cruelly and relentlessly.
A few images from my town last night. Incidentally, this is directly next to where the Lakers used to play before moving to Los Angeles…
The way I see it in regards to the legal trouble in 2003 for Kobe, it finally came out that he didn’t necessarily do everything he was accused, but he was young and dumb and did not act in a good way. However, people can learn and grow from their mistakes and I believe Kobe did that. He was a much different person at the end of his life as he was in 2003-04. He was no longer the immature, selfish person, but rather a great and loving father. He did a lot of charity work and was set for such a great post-playing career. The world lost 9 people in that helicopter crash. All of them are tragic. Say what you will about Kobe’s past, but he touched and affected a lot of people’s lives. He will be missed by many, as will his daughter, Gigi, her best friend and her dad, and all of the rest who were aboard that helicopter.
I’m not a huge basketball fan but I knew about Kobe. His tragic death, along with his daughter, confirms something I’ve been feeling for a while. We can’t wait anymore, we have to act now. Things we stress about don’t really matter. Cherish every day, because you never know when it’ll be your last.
R.I.P.
Perhaps little known Bond angle: he wrote a sort of ‘unofficial’ continuation with Night Probe! where he’s supposedly using James Bond as a character.
Sad news, he’s always been one of my favorite authors, with Dirk Pitt being one of my favorite fictional characters. RIP.
I read Night Probe! a long time ago and always thought that Brian Shaw felt like an older James Bond. Guess my feelings were spot on.
NSNA’s Ernst Stavro Blofeld, RIP
Sad news, he was a better Blofeld than some of the official Blofelds. RIP.
He was one of the finest actors ever, and cinema is poorer without him.
Agreed.
Great actor.
For years I thought that he was already an old man in the 1970’s, because of his part in The Exorcist, but later I found out that he was only in his fourties at the time.
A sad loss. He leaves behind a fabulous body of work. RIP
That’s crazy. Literally one day ago I was looking at his Wikipedia listing and looked for when he was born. A day later the listing is updated with his death. A great actor. RIP, Max.
Great actor, and for me, he will always be Ming the Merciless in the 1980 film “Flash Gordon”.
RIP Max von Sydow. Your Ernst Stavro Blofeld was entertaining.
Hello everyone,
Just letting you know that a former member of this forum, JustAGirl, has passed away on March 24 at a very young age to cancer. I chatted with her a lot and got to meet her in 2015. You probably remember that in 2006 she contributed a lot with pics of the Casino Royale girls, Eva, Caterina and Ivana when this forum was “debrief” instead of “quarterdeck”.
Whatever your religion is, please say a prayer for her soul and/or remember her kindly. She gave us lots of magazine clippings and TV interviews covering Casino Royale when we were all hungry for news on Daniel Craig’s 007 debut.
Thank you.
This is truly terrible news.
R.I.P.
How dreadful. RIP.
Horrible. R.I.P.
